Author The King, is a ...
25 March 2024
"Arthur the King" is a heartwarming story that beautifully marries the thrill of adventure with the touching story of a man and a dog.

Mark Wahlberg delivers a compelling performance as Michael Light, whose journey from adrenaline junkie to compassionate leader is both engaging and believable.

As you know, the true star, however, is Arthur, the stray dog, whose presence adds an emotional depth that truly enriches the film. The cinematography captures the Dominican landscape's raw beauty, enhancing the storytelling with breathtaking visuals.

While the narrative occasionally falls into predictability and clichés, the film's exploration of themes like loyalty, resilience, and companionship shines through. It's a mix of adventure, emotion, and inspiration, with solid performances and stunning visuals that highlight the indomitable spirit of its characters.

Despite some shortcomings, "Arthur the King" stands out for its sincerity and heart, making it a captivating watch that resonates with viewers long after the end. A testament to the power of friendship and perseverance, it's a must-watch that tugs at the heartstrings and inspires.

American Dreamer...
14 March 2024
Owning a home is more than just a roof over your head in America-it's a cornerstone of financial security. Imagine stumbling upon a deal to buy a mansion valued at $5 million for a mere $240,000, with a catch: it becomes yours only after the current owner's demise. Would you leap at this chance, gambling on a future windfall?

This premise unfolds in "American Dreamer," a film inspired by a remarkable account from Chicago Public Radio's This American Life. Peter Dinklage stars as Phil Loder, an economically struggling, twice-divorced economics professor whose dream of homeownership feels like a distant mirage. That is until he crosses paths with Astrid Finnelli, portrayed by Shirley MacLaine, a childless, elderly widow. She offers him her vast mansion for a fraction of its worth, plunging Phil into a whirlwind that challenges his perceptions of the American dream.

Peter Dinklage and Shirley MacLaine form an unforgettable pair, infusing their roles with a blend of gruff charm and deep emotional resonance that begs viewers to metaphorically embrace them through the screen. Their dynamic breathes life into the film, supported by a stellar supporting cast including Matt Dillon, Danny Glover, Kim Quinn, and Danny Pudi, who add their unique zest to the narrative.

Directed by Paul Dektor and written by Theodore Melfi, the film brings laughter, high-stakes antics, and moments that might leave you puzzled. Yet, at its core, "American Dreamer" poses profound inquiries about the essence of happiness, the lengths we'll go to secure it, and how solitude shapes our most transformative choices.

Dinklage's portrayal of Phil makes him irresistibly endearing and authentic, while MacLaine's performance is a delightful reminder of her unparalleled ability to blend sharp wit with deep sentimentality. Notably, the film teases themes of reincarnation, a subtle homage to MacLaine's well-documented beliefs in the subject.

"American Dreamer" not only entertains but also invites reflection on the evolving nature of the American dream, making it a cinematic journey that resonates on multiple levels.

The Fall Guy (2024)
7/10
A Movie That Appreciates Hollywood Oldies.
14 March 2024
In an era where blockbusters often demand homework, with their intricate universes and complex lore, "Barbie" emerges as a delightful outlier. Movies today, from the sprawling epics of "Dune" to the interconnected sagas of the MCU, seem to require a viewer's full dedication-and maybe even a notepad to keep up. This isn't to diminish their artistry, but it's clear that the pure joy of cinema, the sort of effortless fun Hollywood once peddled so well, has become a rare find. A film that welcomes you without prerequisites, "The Fall Guy," seeks to reignite that spark of unadulterated entertainment. It aims to dazzle with the sheer magnetism of its leads, thrust into a whirlwind of romance and adventure, harking back to the days when stunts were real and filmmaking was a team sport, offering a joyride that's as heartwarming as it is thrilling.

Hollywood's narrative-rich turn hasn't dulled the magic of star power, a fact "The Fall Guy" embraces wholeheartedly, reminiscent of a time when the charm of icons like Burt Reynolds was all the spectacle one needed. Ryan Gosling proves his mettle as a jack-of-all-trades, winning hearts even in the most casual settings, his performance in this film further cementing his versatile appeal.

"The Fall Guy" also champions the unsung heroes of cinema: the stunt performers. Through breathtaking feats and daredevil escapades, it pays homage to the risk-takers who've silently shaped cinematic history, although it's not without its critiques, especially in how it sidelines some of its stellar cast in the latter half.

Yet, beyond the adrenaline, there's a poignant commentary on the digital age's challenges to authenticity, making "The Fall Guy" a vibrant counterpoint to the prevailing trends of faceless, CGI-dominated blockbusters. It's a film that doesn't just want to entertain; it wants to remind us of the value of genuine connection, both on the screen and in the stunts that make us hold our breath. In doing so, it doesn't just invite audiences to have fun; it demands it, championing the kind of cinema that's been overshadowed by the gravitas of today's tentpoles.

A lesbian Trip
25 February 2024
Emerging from the wildly entertaining and unabashedly feminine universe of "Drive-Away Dolls," you're instantly reminded of the unique charm of the Coen Brothers' cinematic world. That distinct, offbeat vibrancy, reminiscent of classics thrives in its own bright and audacious realm, unshackled by conventional norms.

Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke weave a road movie that straddles the line between the criminal underbelly reminiscent of "Fargo" (minus its wintry gloom) and the eccentric misadventures seen in "Burn After Reading." The storyline follows two lesbian friends on a whimsical journey to Tallahassee-a place that becomes a recurring gag-embarking on an adventure filled with tongue-in-cheek nods to classic screwball comedies and a dash of '90s indie rawness, complete with a comical assortment of dildos.

The narrative smoothly alternates between the escapades of Marian and Jamie in their borrowed Dodge Aries and the comic pursuits of their felonious tailgaters, offering double the fun with two sets of unlikely companions. Slotnick and Wilson, veterans of Ethan Coen's stage productions, deliver compelling performances, but the spotlight shines brightest on the electric chemistry between Jamie and Marian. Qualley, with her magnetic Southern drawl and captivating presence, explodes on the screen with an energy that reaffirms her status as a standout talent of her generation. Viswanathan, in contrast, offers a gradual crescendo of charisma, beautifully evolving Marian into a character that demands Viswanathan be recognized as a leading lady of note. Feldstein emerges as a hidden gem in the narrative, portraying a determined officer with a comedic edge that hijacks some of the movie's most memorable moments. Additionally, cameo appearances by Matt Damon and Colman Domingo as the film's antagonists add to the riotous charm.

While "Drive-Away Dolls" might tread familiar ground, drawing inevitable comparisons to the Coen Brothers' iconic works, it carves its own path with a blend of raucous humor and defiantly feminine energy. The film's carefree spirit, embodied in the wildly entertaining script by Cooke and Coen, leaps from the screen, captivating audiences with its infectious enthusiasm. More than just a comedic caper, the film leaves a lasting impression with its heartfelt celebration of female ingenuity and joy. "Drive-Away Dolls" is a cinematic joyride through Americana, with vibrant stops along the way and flashbacks that add layers to its allure, encapsulating the kind of spirited adventure you can't help but want to join.

A Movie to watch and rewatch
23 February 2024
We all tell stories, motivated by various reasons-be it out of spite, self-defense, or to protect someone's feelings. These stories either smooth the path of our interactions or become the very sand that grinds the gears. Yet, it's within the gray area that stretches between the pursuit of an unachievable truth and the fabric of the most imaginative lies where the essence of our experiences lies: the emotional impact of an event often overshadows the accuracy of it. In his latest cinematic journey, "About Dry Grasses," Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan delves into this notion with a captivating narrative that spans over three hours, reminding us that every truth carries a shade of the speaker's bias. Through the story of a young teacher yearning for a transfer to Istanbul after a stint in a remote village-a dream derailed by accusations from two students-he explores the idea that our perceptions and hopes are always worth a second glance, for neither despair nor hope should be taken at face value.

As the teacher faces disillusionment, an unexpected ally rekindles his hope, suggesting that embracing our flawed beliefs might be our salvation. Ceylan's narrative argues against the resignation to a cynical acceptance that nothing can change, highlighting that change is often sparked by those who chase their boldest dreams, despite their imperfections. This is vividly illustrated through the protagonist, Samet, who is drawn to Sevim and Nuray-individuals who, unlike him, seem to rise above their cynicisms, offering a glimpse of hope in a reality often marred by disappointment.

Ceylan crafts a story that serves as a mirror to the human condition, suggesting that reality, much like the landscapes that shift from the harshness of winter to the promise of spring, is neither as dire nor as idyllic as it appears. The true challenge lies in navigating the memories of brighter days without being overwhelmed by the shadows of the coldest months.

I'd give this movie a 9/10 as I enjoyed it. From the visual design to the sound, and to the characters and how they performed.

Madame Web (2024)
5/10
A Brilliant Flop
16 February 2024
"Madame Web" surprisingly rises above the expectations set by its awkward trailer and its release in the often-dubious month of February.

This film is centered around a refreshingly low-key superhero story, Dakota Johnson shines with her captivating performance. Directed by S. J. Clarkson, known for her work in television, the movie ventures into visually overwhelming territory towards its climax, peppered with dialogue that often feels a bit heavy-handed. Yet, there's a charm in how Johnson's character, Cassie Webb, navigates through the peculiar events unfolding around her, her frustration visibly mounting as she tries to make sense of it all.

In a particularly gripping moment, Cassie finds herself with literal blood on her hands, foreseeing a death but at a loss on how to stop it. This concept of revisiting events to alter outcomes isn't new-we've seen it in films from "Groundhog Day" to "Happy Death Day." However, "Madame Web" explores these familiar grounds in engaging new ways.

Johnson's mastery in delivering dry, witty remarks breathes life into the film, making you long for more scenes of her character dealing with troublesome teenagers with a steadily growing impatience. Her portrayal adds a down-to-earth flair to the superhero genre.

Although Sweeney, Merced, and O'Connor are somewhat pigeonholed into simplistic roles, and believably playing high school students stretches the imagination, the group dynamic they share with Johnson adds a layer of enjoyable camaraderie to the mix.

A 5/10 movie in my books. Visit moviecity.ng for more fun reviews!!!

Marmalade (2024)
7/10
Awkward but Refreshing.
15 February 2024
Keir O'Donnell's charming debut film "Marmalade" is a delightful rollercoaster of comedy, throwing unexpected twists and turns that keep you on your toes. It's a tale of love, crime, and betrayal, yet it feels refreshingly new and exhilarating from the get-go.

Initially, I was skeptical, bracing myself for a cliché "boy meets bad girl, boy gets into trouble" storyline. But as the movie unfolds, it defies expectations at every corner, never ceasing to surprise until the very end.

The dynamic duo of Baron and Marmalade, portrayed by Keery and Morrone, electrify the screen. Keery's Baron starts off as a simple guy, content with his routine until Marmalade shakes up his world. Morrone embodies Marmalade with infectious energy, leading Baron into a whirlwind of excitement and danger. Yet beneath her playful facade lies a darker motive, adding depth to her character.

So, sit back, buckle up, and enjoy the wild ride of "Marmalade." It may not be what you anticipated, but that's all part of its charm.

The best genre blending film in 2022
27 October 2022
Significant Other is an American drama, mystery and sci-fi film directed by Dan Olsen and Robert Berk. It's stars Maika Monroe and Jake Lacy as lead actress and actor.

I really enjoyed this film because of firstly the performance of the characters.

Very few characters were used in the production of this film because it was done during the COVID pandemic.

Maika Monroe was great with her perform. Her display of emotions which includes fear, shock, presence and so on. She does that pretty well. Jake Lacy also had a good performance as Harry. Harry is Ruth's lover. He is a jovial and friendly guy. Jack portrays so well.

I also enjoyed the chemistry that existed between Maika and Jack. It was Amazing. They compliment each other so well.

I loved the film's setting and cinematography. Significant Other was filmed in Oregon, one of the reasons for the impressive environment.

The use of CGI for creatures was also impressive.

There are so many positives to take from this film and there are also negatives.

One of which is that there are so many unanswered questions. I won't ask the questions here because they will include spoilers .

I kinda feel they left some questions unanswered because they hope to make a sequel from it but we'll have to wait and see.

A thriller with no thrills
23 October 2022
Accident Man 2 starts off well but unfortunately did not live up to my expectations following how good Accident Man is.

The fighting scenes looks clearly choreographed, fake and slow. I feel like, to make a fighting scene look authentic, you need to hastening the sequence. This would hide some of the flaws in the fight.

I wonder why Sui-ling was always pointing. There was no sync between her words and her body movements, no emotion at all.

The film also include lots of fights. I think there is a scene where they fight for 7 minutes straight. The only fight scene I enjoyed was that of Yendi and Mike. That was probably the best fight scene in the movie.

I wasn't pleased with the performances of the actors and actresses.

The only actors performance I was pleased with is that of Dante (George). He was childish as can be, added lots of emotions to his portrayal.

I really enjoyed his role. The only issue I had with his role was that there was a disgusting scene he had to play. I almost threw up, I wasn't expecting that.
