Koe no katachi (2016)
Never before has anime made me cry
It's really a story about loving yourself. As a high school teacher, you get angry with kids but really know that sometimes their world is in turmoil. I don't know if bullies are ever remorseful about their actions, but this kid was. Suicide is another part of this story, and we never understand what goes on in their minds. We just have to remember that kindness always prevails.
We think that we will always be the same person, but we can change, and only another's love can change you.
I'm just rambling, I know, and I can't remember anyone's name but it didn't matter. I wanted to stop the movie halfway but I was intrigued why someone said they cried, but towards the end I felt water streaming down my face. It was so beautiful and touching how the main characters all seemed to be flawed, and were aware of it but were able to overcome in the end. A beautiful movie about beautiful losers. Aren't we all?
The Brothers Karamazov (1958)
Yul Brynner as Dmitri brilliant!
Spoiler alert! Please read the book first!
Please read the book! Yul Brynner is a good choice for Dmitri...but there can never be an actor for Dmitri...he is just too perfect as a human being, with all his flaws, vivacity and personality. He is truly a lovable scoundrel. Ivan represents the rational human being who has figured everything out and does not need God. Alexi is the hero in the book. Grushenka is the female equivalent of Dmitri. Shmerdiakov represents the masses, the ignorant sheep and the war-mongers. Yul is a great choice, but there is noone who would ever be able to play the book's Dmitri. The others are great, especially Grushenka. But the movie bypasses the true story of the little boy, and the superb ending of the book.
There is no happy ending. Dimitri does not escape. Ivan does not go back to court- he actually goes mad after meeting the devil...so perfect. Ivan refutes God but meets the devil!
