Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024)
I gave it a two/three, but that was being kind
This was very poor in acting, direction and 'comedy'.i actually think it needs a totally new team involved, or bin it. Some of the stunts and effects would indicate a decent budget, which makes the results even worse. A couple of the actors do an OK job, but come across badly because of the dialogue and direction.
Really trying to find some positives in it to be fair, and I have definitely seen worse (not much), but not sure why Amazon green lit this and gave it so much money. There are a hundred TV series in the past that worked with similar dynamics, just done in a much more effective way. I would save time in your life and avoid.
Glass Onion (2022)
Unfortunate pastiche
This tried way too hard. It felt it was trying to be 'Clue' or 'Murder by death' but not even half as well written or acted. I get it was an Agatha Christie pastiche but it was way too on the nose. So many parts were direct takes of cards on the table, the blue train, evil under the sun and a couple of others. The acting tried too hard to be funny whereas the lines didn't meet the acting. Some good actors absolutely wasted and Dave Bautista really was as bad as bland as they come, trying way too hard and chewing lines. I quite enjoyed the first one but just like Brannagh's second attempt at a Christie this second attempt crosses too far in to trying to be quick comedy and away from what made the first successful (dark comedy). It wasn't terrible but 3-5/10 max.
Rocky Horror Show: Livestream Theater (2020)
I love the Rocky Horror Show but...
This wasn't even done to school project level, did they have any professions on the back end at all. So many great actors so embarrassingly used and wasted. I am shocked, this is the only Rocky Horror version I have disliked out of many. Such a shame - I even liked the old ZX spectrum game and have seen live on many occasions. The use of Tim Curry seemed wasteful too and almost abusive, he has been one of my favourite actors for a long time from the original to Clue to his roles in Criminal Minds, it was also very jarring they way they used multiples for parts, I get it was a webcast but I have done better myself.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
The Silmarillion was a million ideas bodged together
As Tolkien fans probably know the Silmarillion was put together by his estate, sons and editors after his death. It was pieced together from various separate sources and although it had some good ideas it never had any mesh or narrative which is what made The Hobbit good for kids and The Lord of the Rings an innovative take on a book called The Worm Oroberous which aligned with the war in Europe. The LOTR films work because they were masterfully done and very well acted with some stand out performers while The Hobbit wasn't my cup of tea at all. I had high hopes for this series but it is monotonous and messy but my biggest issue is the terrible acting and direction. Much of it looks very pretty but it didn't hold me or the other three people I watched it with (different generations). The fighting sequences and effects also seemed below par. I can't really believe they spent $1 billion on this it just feels poor and is going to lose the audience very quickly. I can not recommend it I am afraid.
