Joy Ride (2023)
Perfect to watch for some girl time!!
Small tip- forget about the reviews here, give it a try!!! Honestly I had no idea about the premise of this movie or the plot - came across a video on instagram and thought just watch it, what the heck. Wanted to be surprised.
And this is hilarious, and unhinged and totally inappropriate- absolutely lovedddd it. This is perfect to watch when you need some girl time or a night watch to wind down.
Filled with loud laughter, cracking jokes and also really emotional bits (I was bawling). Perfect balance of everything. Great casting too! And loved the twist they had towards the end.
You won't regret it!
Land of Bad (2024)
Ignore the bad reviews, this was great!
What a great watch this was, so refreshing to see such a good storyline, great plot twist, amazing cast and writing - AND GOOD CINEMATIC SHOTS. There was nothing wrong with this movie and it was quite surprising. Walked into the theatre with no idea what this movie was (never heard about it before) and yet what a damn good surprise it was!!
Honestly, I wished I was watching this at home just so I could freeze some shots to admire the beauty of them or to watch the most intense scenes again because they were just too good. I have not a single bad thing to say about this but forget the reviews here, go take a look and you'd watch something you'd never regret seeing!
Upgraded (2024)
Forget the bad reviews, this is the lighthearted romcom movie I was looking for
Honestly, I wasn't too sure about watching this when the read the negative reviews on here. But after watching it, I loved it. It's lighthearted, interesting and creative storyline with just the right amount of flirting and romance.
The main character, Ana Santos, is a nobody moved to NYC living on her sister's futon with no savings. She has a Masters in Arts and works at a popular art gallery hoping to be noticed by her boss. She does, and flies to London on a last-minute notice and coincidentally meets this guy she ends up really liking. But there's a twist, she's not who she says she is. Honestly I can understand why she did it and sometimes we get so carried on in conversation we don't care to correct any errors that pop up. And then, things happen - the good, the bad, and it's about how she navigates this and ends up achieving everything she has dreamed for herself.
Being a millenial, this gave me such nostalgic Princess Diaries or Monte Carlo vibes, the feel-good romance and adventure. I have no complaints big enough to write home about, but overall, great movie!! Perfect for a chilled casual day when you want to relax.
Past Lives (2023)
A timeless classic, romantic story
This is exactly what I needed to see. Two lovers finding their place in this lifetime and not having the chance to give it a try. It takes a slow pace that depicts life as it is, with tons of uncertainty and patience and not knowing what's next. It's beautiful. And painful. You can see the love in their eyes and the pain of having to hold back feelings.
I believe in fate and soulmates and lovers who have known each other in past lives and that feeling of familiarity like you've known them forever. This is exactly what this story narrates around, only ever so naturally and vividly. I love the color grading, the scripting, the choice of casting and the visual appeal altogether. A must watch. A job very well done.
Murder Mystery 2 (2023)
It's alright, not bad, not good
Wanted to finally watch Murder Mystery 2 because the prequel was really good and originally funny. Apart from the good on-screen chemistry and friendship of Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler, there was nothing much to this movie. The scriptwriting wasn't great and so many loopholes and you could guess who did it after a few hints. Almost all of these shots were done with a green screen so the filming wasn't much either. Had occasional funny lines between a few characters but I mean really, it wasn't that good but not terrible either. Looks like they didn't want to put much effort into it and just needed another movie tbh.
But it's not that bad either, just some innocent fun and laughter and we can let it go.
But would I watch this again? Nope.
WeCrashed (2022)
It's something you'd never expect to see
Honestly, I was super excited when I saw the trailer and stumbled upon it again today accidentally and I finished it in one sitting. Brilliant brilliant casting first of all - all the actors play their characters so well especially the lead cast. Adam is completely toxic and manipulative while being blindly optimistic and you're constantly thinking this man is psycho and out of his mind but well done to Jared Leto. Makes me think that most entrepreneurs are as such, all they care about is the vision without even sometimes understanding business 101. And the other psychotic character is Rebekah and you constantly wonder if she's bluffing, that's how naive that character truly is but Anne Hathaway plays it so perfectly and seamlessly.
The story is based around two manipulative, psychotic characters like said above who are driven with a dream and have no real life expertise or working experience and they are the "entrepreneurs" of this story who make one bad choice after the other that leads them to their demise, no matter how many times the true experts try to help them out, this is clearly depicted when Lautner says "your investors have lended you a rope and you hung yourself with it". And Adam also, no matter how much of a maverick he is, blindly follows his wife's business advice (when she's not being his soul guru) and she only really has been in "wall street for 3 weeks" as mocked by one of the investors. The S-1 form arc was hilarious you actually couldn't believe your eyes.
But so so well done. If you want to watch a Business drama without any heavy technical boring terms, this is the one! So so good!
Fifty Shades Freed (2018)
Fifty Shades of, enough sex!
Ok so I tried really hard to suppress these thoughts, but seems unlikely. Wanted to rewatch the Fifty Shades trilogy again randomly and I'm currently on Freed. Firstly, it wasn't as great as I remembered from way back and the storyline seems awkward. The movie makers are trying to sell "sex" way too much and it gets BORING by the third movie. I'm fast-forwarding the sex scenes now (also sex must be dry/rough because there's zero foreplay sometimes and he enters? Ouch!) Also do you really have so much sex like every second every day? They get turned on at the sight of each other (I'm 25 and I've been there too) but this is wayyy too much. Almost as if they're really pushing the sex-narrative sheesh. Enough already.
She's a fresh graduate virgin who is deflowered by a 27-ish-old Billionaire (super hard to believe, he should at least be 30 but who cares abt being realistic) and she's immediately super into Rough Sex/ BDSM now which is ridiculous. Her fears and vulnerability arent showed enough IMO. Being there, it's a broad subject with a lot of grey area, but none of that is shown. They could have at least made this movie to create some positive conversation surrounding this topic but no, it comes across as something only traumatised sadists would do. There's no curiosity from her end. And the character Ana makes weird unnecessary noises throughout the 3 movies (not moaning, but hmmmm's and mhhh's and sighs and random giggles when no joke was made) it's totally awkward for the viewer.
These movies really don't do justice to the books at all. Some reviewers were correct, this is soft porn and really has completely forgotten the actual storyline and it's just a bunch of different sex scenes slightly connected with some dialogues now.
But I enjoyed watching the fights, his backstory and his vulnerability showing. Wished the directors would have explored that side towards the latter part and removed the sex scenes because YES WE GET IT, he's into BDSM and he's great at sex. But gimme a break, please!
The 6/10 stars are on the entire trilogy.
Us (2019)
I am clueless, so many questions.
Expected a much better outcome after watching Get Out but this was disappointing. Not in the usual 'boring popcorn horror movie' way because I tried to keep an open mind about the synopsis of the movie and what they were trying to tell us (rather, what the whole 'point' of this was).
On the positive side, the casting was great and the balance of the actors was ok-ish. I get that they added the buffoon husband to add some humor (although WHY I'm yet to understand). The concept was great but here's the down side. This exact same storyline could have been planned wayyy better by reorganizing the shot list. Because after seeing the plot at the end my question is, WHY DIDN'T RED JUST SAY "YOU STOLE MY LIFE" AFTER COMING BACK TO THE REAL WORLD? Why did she keep on explaining the whole thing when 1. They clearly had an encounter before and 2. Adelaide's personality/life was stolen and 3. Why did the Human Adelaide show fear and not anger that Red had come back to steal her life? That was the first question I can't shake off.
And second, so the Child 'Red' is the leader of this and plans this whole Save the Humanity mock-up thing to take over the world (because she says that she was anointed by the Tethered because of their special connection). Ok so, she comes back to the real world while Human Adelaide is with the Tethered and the roles switch now. How did Human Adelaide become evil and forget to talk then? Also why didn't she try to come back to the real world and instead plan a whole plot to get the humanity (but also if Evil Red was anointed, what did she do with that? Instead she became proper human and lived the good life and pretended not to know about anything when she met Red 30 years later). Good lord, this is messy writing because clearly it doesn't make sense.
Anyway, don't watch. That's the bottom line.
Black Swan (2010)
Absolutely insane!!
Not going to lie, there were some 'why would she do that' moments until you slowly realise her mental illness, the schizophrenia, the anxiety and always thinking people are out to get her. And the WHY is explained in the movie with the way her mother treats her and behaves around her - never letting her be a woman (teddy bears ffs), zero privacy and putting all of her expectations on Nina to be the dancer she could never be. All of these factors are explained for Nina to become a perfectionist and she never lets loose. Every action and step is calculated and tbh I could relate to that, never letting lose to appear perfect. And the character Lily is the total opposite so the viewer could do a comparison between the two. The end scene while the show is running is mind-boggling and with Nina's illusions - the viewer just never know what's true or not until the very end. One of the best movies I've watched, idk why I waited sooo long to watch this!
Look Both Ways (2022)
Unexpectedly good!!
I chose this movie on a boring Sunday and thought it'll be a light watch but it turned out to be much much better than that. It's almost original with the plot and storyline and makes you think about the power of decision making. Literally every single choice we make defines our life story, and the power is always with us to make or break ourselves. I love how everything that was meant to be for Natalie found her in both the plots. Really makes you think. What's meant for you will always find it's way. A good career, a good man to love.. Everything will find you when you least expect it, at the right time. Absolute piece. Loved it.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
I'm glad I stuck till the end
I was reading a few minority reviews here about how confusing it is at the beginning and I totally agree, but you need to hold on to let the crazy parts go to experience the depth of the story. But isn't that how life is? This was thought provoking, full of weird humor that you can laugh off, and my god, the tears because the story in the end, how it all comes together is just beautiful. I could so relate to the mother-father love story and saying "we always find each other" and the mother-daughter relationship and unexpectedly I was in tears watching all this.
So pleaseeee, stick till the end, I promise everything will make sense.
Not Okay (2022)
The story could have been communicated better
I get the point of the movie that the writers, producers and directors tried to get across and that is fair and relevant in today's time - there are so many Internet Kids and Adults that have made that their whole existence. The way they dress, talk, behave are all very much like virtual and not IRL-like and that seems problematic for the older generations, worrying about what humans will be like in 2,5,10 years from now.
Back to the movie, as mentioned the protagonist is hate-able for the reasons above. Rowan's character is well-played out, but somewhere along the way - the story almost does not make sense, almost too fictional and immature (unless this is directed for a younger viewership).
I enjoyed the movie, almost got anxiety when the secret was out because there really isn't a win-win and really felt for the main character. But yeah, not too impressed. The trailer was soo much better IMO.
Lightyear (2022)
Calm down, it's a Children's movie
I almost can't believe the bad ratings because it was a pretty great movie - best to keep in mind that this is a Children's movie, lighthearted and all in good fun. The graphics were amazing as expected and the storyline made sense too, almost too emotional for an animated movie. I've always loved Buzz Lightyear so it was nice to see his story here.. The cat was adorable and his friendship with Commander Hawthorne was lovely to see, and heartbreaking at the end.
My opinion: Don't take it too seriously because this was a good breather and a lovely movie, very enjoyable. If you get interested in the story, you almost can't look away despite the fact that it's an animation. Pretty good!
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
A big, long WTF moment
Sadly the movie didn't level up to the production level or quality of the other Jurassic World (legendary) movies. It was shocking to see how terrible the acting was from world-class actors and it was clear that they were chosen for the sake of continuity and not for talent. In my opinion, the acting was the worst - felt like I was watching a school show. The storyline could have been better - the build-up took such a long time, approx 3/4 of the movie and climax (which was a good one, not terrrible) and then everything else rushed through as if to finish the movie quickly. What was the big rush? Because everything after the climax was pretty great and everyone wanted to see a longer timeline.
Overall opinion - had HUGE hopes for this movie and was super excited because we grew up with Jurassic World but this was shockingly, heartbreakingly bad.
*4 stars for climax and the few minutes after.
