Drink Masters (2022)
Love the idea.....
I've finished episode 4 and I've definitely gained a whole new level of appreciation for the art of mixology. I love the challenges and the creativity. That being said.....the elimination process is a bit of a head-scratcher. How one contestant who has shown ingenuity since the start gets eliminated after 1 bad cocktail when another contestant who has consistently received the same feedback every episode for his drinks (too dry and unbalanced) skates by again and again is really infuriating. Hoping the judging is more fair and consistent going forward, but right now, it does seem like they are playing favorites.
Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019)
Love the creativity........BUT
The elimination format is terrible and unfairly knocks out really talented artists.
The judges are so pretentious, which is really a shame as I feel most contestants are looking for constructive feedback to help them do better each week. However, I imagine the judges' attitude is likely indicative of the industry as a whole.
Stacey Dooley was a fabulous host. She kept the focus of the show about the contestants and not her and seemed genuinely empathetic when contestants didn't make it. Maya Jama is busy trying to look like a Kardashian and is constantly distracting the MUAs during their challenges. Her sympathy is forced and doesn't seem authentic at all.
I will continue to watch the show as I am no artist, and am always in awe of people's ability to draw, paint, and bring ideas to life through color.
Untold (2021)
Victim Blaming
This documentary should have been the opportunity for Manti to speak out, but it was vastly overshadowed by his perpetrator's attempt to justify her actions because she was a confused person at the time.
Just because you are a part of a marginalized group does not make you a good person. 'Naya' is a deeply disturbed person who created an elaborate scheme (on purpose!) to satisfy her own needs - which she admitted in the series. She shows absolutely no remorse, made no apology and really doesn't take any accountability for the sick, twisted web of lies she weaved. Oh, and she involved a CHILD in this fake relationship persona she crafted. Sick, grotesque are the best words I can use to describe her and I don't feel they adequately sum up what an evil and manipulative thing she did to Manti. She had every opportunity to come clean and take ownership, but didn't. She even had the nerve to be upset with Manti for releasing the voicemails she left him so he could try and prove how convincing she was as a woman over the phone.
How is this not victim blaming?!
Add on the morally-deprived so called "journalists" at Deadspin who feel there is a time limit on someone's choice to respond to their personal life and the other major media outlets like CNN and Sports Illustrated and trusted names like Katie Couric and Anderson Cooper who not only regurgitated the lies but were part of the camp who went as far to question Manti's sexually and the sheep-like mentality of the general public who will just believe everything they hear......I mean, how can you not feel for the poor guy?
Was he naive - yes. Did he deserve to be publicly ridiculed and crucified, ultimately leading to ruining his life? I hope the the majority would agree that the answer is a clear NO.
Britain's Best Home Cook (2018)
10 Stars for Season 1, but Season 2....
Absolutely loved Season 1 - the contestants, host and judges were all wonderful and very supportive. Season 2 is just okay. The addition of Angela Hartnett was a huge mistake in my opinion; cold, pretentious and just an all around drab personality. In addition, I'm not even sure why they bothered to pick "favorites" in the 1st cook of each episode because it literally doesn't mean anything - at least in Season 1, they were able to choose the ingredients in the next cook. I know Claudia Winkleman is a lot for some people, but honestly, without her, I think the show would be a bit boring and I personally love her personality.
If they would return to the Season 1 format and replace Angela, I would very much look forward to a Season 3.
