Gray (2023)
Boring and uninteresting
I really wanted this to be so much better. Was looking for an intelligent and exciting show to watch and thought I found it with Gray.
Made myself comfortable and pressed play on episode one... Thirty minutes later I gave up. Nothing interesting or exciting had happened. A secret organisation has lost 4 agents in a month and they pick up a former agent who has been retired for 20 years. All that drags on forever and not one moment did I feel drawn in or even slightly interested in any of the characters we get to see. No one is convincing in the role they play, nor does any of them make you curious to know more about them or their story. Talking about story, that's probably the biggest issue at hand; it's all so absurdly unrealistic that it made me feel like saying "stop insulting my intelligence" (and I'm definitely no genius).
I feel giving it 4 stars out of 10 is being pretty generous, but I guess I'm on that mood.
Off to find something better.
Silent Night (2023)
John Woo is back!
Yes! It's been a while, but John Woo is back with a bang. The man still knows how to make an action movie and it shows. This feels good, reminded me of the 80s and 90s action style. The bad guys are basically just there to line up and get taken out. Hard. It looks stylish and violent at the same time.
Sure, this flick doesn't bring anything new to the table, we've seen it all before. Many times even. But this one is definitely highly entertaining and above average.
One thing though, whithout giving away too much, our main character (very well played by Joel Kinnaman) loses his voice in the beginning of the movie. This could've led to some interesting and tense moments during the movie, but it doesn't. It seems more like an excuse to create a cool, tough and silent "hero", which I consider a missed opportunity. How good would it have been if at some stage he desperately needed his voice to rescue someone or even himself from a dire situation, but was unable to produce a single word? None of that though. Like I said; missed opportunity.
Nonetheless, I'm more than happy John Woo is back on the scene and hopefully more will follow.
If you like action/revenge movies and are looking to be entertained without having to dig too deep into your emotions, definitely give this one a shot. 7 out of 10.
Cobra Kai (2018)
Overrated
I loved the original Karate Kid movie. It was a cool (albeit predictable) story with a nice climax. Sure Larusso's style was not the best, chunky and not fluent at all. But he got away with it. He was likeable.
He had Mr. Miyagi. Wax on, wax off. It just worked. The sequels, including the one with Jaden Smith were all pretty disappointing to say the least. So when I heard about this show, Cobra Kai, I was apprehensive at first, but curious and excited about the fact that most of the original cast would return, with Daniel and Johnny as the leads.
It took me long enough, but I finally started watching it a few days ago... and man was I disappointed! Today I gave it its last chance, but halfway through episode eight I pulled the plug.
The only good thing is Johnny (William Zabka), everyone and every thing else is just very disappointing. The story is extremely predictable and drags on forever. Daniel still looks like an amateur doing his kata. Nothing really exciting happens in the majority of episodes. The acting looks overall forced and of B movie quality. Sure, there are some mildly funny jokes and referrals to the movie, but hardly enough to lift it to the next level. I honestly don't understand the high ratings, other than them being based on pure nostalgia. Five out of 10 stars because it's a nice try.
Bosch (2014)
Boring and overrated
Maybe I gave up too soon. But if you still don't care about the characters (including main guy Bosch) after two episodes, something's not right. The acting is okay, but not of the level you'd expect looking at the rating this show has on imdb. Not to mention the predictability. They're all there; the love interest (why the hell she's even remotely drawn to boring Bosch is beyond me), the annoying lawyer, the goofy cops, the righteous and stern attitude vs internal affairs and so on. Nah, this is not the show it pretends to be. Long story short; boring, slow, predictable, and uninteresting.
