One Piece (2023)
It's a decent show, but very overrated in my opinion
I haven't watched the anime. My review is based on its entertainment value for a general adult audience rather than its faithfulness to the source material for fans.
Luffy is a character I am having very hard time to connect with. He's one of the most annoying main characters I've seen in a while. I can understand being naive or stupid, but his level is delusion is just irritating. He's an adult who's been on his own for quite some time; It's hard to believe he he doesn't understand he can't pay for food by merely saying "I'll be rich one day and then I'll pay". It's ridiculous. Furthermore the amount of times he repeats "I'm Gonna Be King Of The Pirates" becomes tiresome.
The show is rated PG-14, which means it's not meant for children. Yet, when we see a character on the brink of death due to blood loss, we don't see any blood. The only instance of Zoro cutting someone with his sword is in the first episode. They also never kill anyone, they are just knocking off the pirates and leaving, allowing those pirates to come back after them or the people they saved.
Idiotic and senseless scenarios like these just keep repeating.
Perhaps it's intended to be humorous for younger viewers, but considering the show's non-kid-friendly rating, I just don't get it.
It's unique, the production is awesome, but it's just not intriguing as the average rating here suggests.
Lucifer (2016)
Good but not great
I really enjoyed the first season, by the end of the second one I already started losing interest, and now I'm in the middle of the 3rd one and kind of already forcing myself to continue watching, up to the point where I had to stop and write this review because I got bored.
I'm sorry to disappoint the fans but I can totally understand why FOX were not interested in it any more and why it didn't reach the expected popularity.
What I like is the general idea, the characters, the acting, the atmosphere, the light and funny script, that's why the first season was fun.
What I don't like is how slow the main storyline is progressing. I can basically summarize the first 2 seasons in a few sentences and you'll miss nothing to jump right to the 3rd season. Every episode is about another homicide. It's not a great crime show when it comes to solving cases, but it's entertaining because it's light, funny and you get to know the characters. But after a while it's becoming really repetitive. Most of the cases are boring, not thrilling and not surprising.
What I mostly dislike is how the characters are not evolving.
In the first season you'd expect Lucifer to do unacceptable stuff as the "police" in the field, but you'd also expect him to learn something after like 40 episodes, but that doesn't happen. it just feels like he's doing the same mistakes and unacceptable stuff as he did in the first season. I don't expect him to change completely obviously, it's part of his character, but I do expect him to evolve, to learn, but it doesn't happen. It's not just the police work but everything related to his problem in terms of feelings/anger/destiny. I just feel like it's going in a loop.
I want the story about him being a devil to evolve, to see how it affects normal people around him. I want some crime cases to evolve and spread over a season and be a main part of every episode. I want the character to evolve and behave differently after a season or two.
I don't know I'll be able to finish all 28 episodes of the 3rd season, it's crazy, too much time wasted on boring investigations and repetitive conversations and arguments that we already heard in previous seasons. Even the "special powers" are barely used.
Atypical (2017)
One of the best things I've watched in a while
It's not your typical high-school drama. The story's about an autistic child called Sam, but the show doesn't focus on just Sam, it involves everyone who's part of his life: family, friends, therapists etc. I really loved all of the characters, some were a bit exaggerated but it's fine and helps keeping the show light. The script in my opinion is really good. It's not banal as what we see at most other TV shows these days. The dialogues and the behavior of the characters are believable, you can really relate to them and feel them. It will make you feel like you're actually part of that family and perhaps will make you understand a little bit about what it's like raising an autistic kid.

Game of Thrones (2011)
Great show but I do not feel satisfied.
They have taken great books and did not fail converting it into an amazing TV show, one of the best ever.
The world design is amazing, the atmosphere, the characters, the dialogues, it all looks so good and real.
There's no doubt that they have filmed an awesome show, but still, what makes it so different, what makes it so special that it turned into the hit it is?
For me, It's basically the progression of the story. I did not read the books but since the show is based on the books, I can say they have chosen the right books to turn into a show. The story is constantly progressing, you will never feel that an episode has ended but the world has not changed. There's always something happening, everything has a meaning. This is quite rare because books are usually turned into movies. The TV shows are usually quite dull and once they are done with the character and story building, the main plot becomes repetitive and boring, which isn't the case here.
Additionally, In GOT it's not just 1 plot. It's multiple connected events happening in different places in the world. In modern TV shows you usually get to know just one side, usually the "good side". in GOT there's no such thing. You get to know all the sides involved and you never know what's going to happen, who's going to die and who's not.
That's how they keep you "hooked". There's so much happening, different events in different camps. You will always wonder what's going to happen and how one event in one camp affect all the other things happening around the world.
But it all leads me to the main problem that I had with the story.
I finished all 7 seasons, and yes, it was interesting. I was constantly hooked, but I never felt satisfied. It's like i spent 7 season waiting for something, expecting something that has never happened. Some main events such as big battles that I wanted to see, never really happened because the heroes died or it will happen only in season 8.
Some of the battles that we have seen, did not really meet my expectations.
And all those "plot twists" are usually one ally betraying another. It happens so often that I got used to it quickly enough. From there it was hard for me to really call anything a "plot twist" when it's expected and already part of the show. The show is basically about sex, death and betrayals.
Any way, they did something really great here.
I wish we could see more shows like this and stories which are taken from talented book writers, because I can't stand the banal scripts of most TV shows those days.
The 100 (2014)
You might like it if you're a teenager or have really low standards
I've been looking for a new show to watch and decided to go through the reviews here on IMDB. I decided to eventually watch it out of the curiosity to see why it gets so much hate even though it has a decent average score.
I've seen two main reasons why people didn't like it.
1. Too many scientifically unrealistic parts
2. It's more of a "teen drama" than anything else.
On the other hand, others were saying that the first few episodes are boring but then it gets better with some amazing story, and plot twists that won't shame "game of thrones".
Eventually I was able to watch until about the middle of the second season and I couldn't watch it any more.
Why do people watch movies/tv shows?
Because it's a way to escape the reality for a while. We like to imagine a different world with a different set of rules or scenarios. A scenario can be something that is theoretically possible, like a nuclear war that ruins the world, or it can be something completely imaginary, like a Zombie Apocalypse or a world with Magic and Dragons.
Once those rules are set, I want to see what would happen and how would people react in that given situation.
In this show, we're talking about our world, 100 years from now. As a viewer, that's the world I am trying to imagine. But it's hard to do so when they are making up stuff that is absolutely unrealistic scientifically.
Then I read excuses such as "It's a movie, it shouldn't be realistic, take it as it is".
That's a silly excuse for a stupid script that nobody bothered to correct.
If you're making up stuff that doesn't make sense in the "set of rules" that the story is based on, then you're completely ruining the entire experience. Instead of enjoying the thing, the viewer gets bothered with thoughts such as "that's not possible", "I can't imagine that", "that's stupid". It will happen to you every episode in this show.
Most commonly the miraculous way everyone heal their critical wounds within a day or two.
Personally I can ignore all the scientific issues and focus on the story and the characters, but here the "teen drama" comes to the picture.
Yes, we're talking about 100 teens and we'll see drama, but that's not the issue.
One problem is the banal and really stupid dialogues and actions of the "heroes". Everything looks so fake and exaggerated. "NO! You are going to die!" - "But I have to do it, he would", "Oh, ok, do it". That's the type of conversations you will see over and over and over again. How can you relate to any of the character when none of their behavior look natural? The acting isn't that good as well. So it isn't enough that the script is bad, but they also say it in a way that reminds me a play at school and not professional actors.
It isn't just the dialogues, it's everything about the script and the way it was filmed that makes it so unrealistic, silly and exaggerated. Everything they do will be dramatic, always nearly a death experience. And if they die, you'll be asking yourself why didn't they duck, why didn't they run, why did they stand right in the middle of the road instead of hiding behind the trees. Why do 4 characters stand and watch their friend hanging with a rope which is tied to a tree but nobody's thinking to hold the rope just in case or at least check that the tie is safe. Some basic common sense. I'd give more examples but I don't want to give spoilers.
And the plot? those people who talked about all the amazing twists. Are you kidding me?! what are you talking about?!
The main characters seem to have 99 souls, you can be positive that they will find a way to survive anything even when it's impossible, over and over again.
It's not a twist, it's just dumb. Same thing about the "mountain man", a perfect place which turns to be hiding a big secret. wow, haven't seen that coming...
Some people were comparing the level of those "Plot Twists" to Game Of Thrones.
I am not even a huge GoT fan, but comparing this banal plot to GoT is an insult to intelligence.
It still earned the 5 from me because the story is still somehow entertaining. I am taking it more of a comedy than anything serious.
But don't bother with it, you'll find better things to watch.
