Into the Wild (2007)
To live a simple life
What a brand new masterpiece, the story is full of adventure and life, it brings us back to nature - the beautiful side of the world.
We got to recognize the society is getting interrupted by the market system. People has already forgot what they dream for. The ultimate goal of life is not about money, but about the value deep inside your heart. The film is well made with many different views about life learned throughout the grow-up of the boy, it raises the concern between sacrificing nature to get better development in city. We have lost ourselves in a blurred vision of society, and let the "empty hole" dominating us and motivating us to work and give up enjoying the nice pieces around us.
Like "Cars", it gets us to know what time to stop and look around the things you have in hand. Everyone is stuck into a puzzle they cannot give up the social perception or the belief not to go away for a try to involve in the world. It does give us surprise if we learn how to makes friend with it. We don't always be jammed in car congestion, or being upset for a salary cut and unable to purchase food in high-class restaurants. Have a wider vision, the world is different to us.
There is always strong struggle between the operation of society and preservation of nature. Every human should be of the same status. Every one single man is valuable. What I have been touched in the scene that a guard has caught Christopher for taking the train, just because he doesn't have money or an identity even. In today's world, you have to take up every issues by the useless papers and some rubbish cards. Just one small paper can get you into paradise or to the hell. Identity cards, passports, cheques, ... from when on did people give so many limitations to themselves?
The theme of film brought about is what I enjoy and agree very much. It is the definition of happiness. Definitely of much deeper study in happiness than "Pursuit of Happiness". Happiness does not come from money, it also cannot come from independence. God creates the world and get people to enjoy, but not their own selves. From the movie, the most enjoyable moments are the time when Christopher meets every new people in a spot. "Happiness comes true only when shared." It shows great Christianity and nature in the movie. The "God Bless Us" in the backside, the salvation village has got the characters and audience relaxed.
The superb landscape and marvelous natural world has fascinated me in the complete 120 minutes. It is fun and documentary-like, filming of animals and plants captured in the character's journey, recording of daily conversations with new friends met in his trip. Thanks to the cameramen and editors, shots on the beach or sea are so smooth and genuine, it is like a real travel show but brings meaning to life.
It could be named as "No Country For Young Man". The young guy needs to take risk and go everywhere he likes, regardless of the limit society has hanged on to him, regardless of his parents. He really does a "jumper" job: Everywhere is possible. In the world we find no place for a young and active person to go free, freedom should be the right to born with, however, life is not under control by oneself. All are obliged to regulations and instructions. Set by whom? God even would not stop us to go on our own way. The territories should not once be there.
It's time to change old men's rules. The world would get wonderful, only a few steps to walk out of our sight. Lead your lifestyle and don't lose control of your life by temptations brought in society. Learn to appreciate everything around, and sunshine is being with us always.
Ah fei jing juen (1990)
Hope and Disappointments, Remember and Forget, Encounter and Miss
A film for the search of one's own root, own home, about the continuation of the journey for love, it is all the same when people are young and it applies to all people despite the generation gap or changes in the society.
Disappointment always emerges after a high expectation is given. Leung finds Yuddy's house is not special after a long-time expectation, it would mean without the initial expectation, disappointment would be avoided. However people would always live with expectation, especially throughout the whole film. So Li-zhen hopes for marriage with Yuddy, Leung Fung-Ying hopes to be together with Yuddy while Zeb hopes to be with Leung, Yuddy wants to get along with his biological mother and Tide hopes to receive the phone call from So Li-zhen. Everyone has his or her own hopes but finally all of them are disappointed.
The film name is actually reflecting days of youngsters and frivolity when young people would freely choose what to do without a price. They would not realize the end of life is coming, and they would try their best to go forward to search for more possibilities. No mentioning of responsibility and moral burdens would keep them move on and on, like the birds without legs said by Yuddy in the film.
Another recurring theme in Wong Kar Wai's films is the motif of time, which is directly referenced in characters' dialogues, like So Li-zhen and Yuddy built up their relationship by the one-minute to 3 pm while Yuddy and Leung finished establishing their first sexual relation at around 3 am. Yuddy met Tide in the Philippines, and the time was also around 3 am. Both time periods are the same but distinct in terms of day and night. 3 am, or 3 pm, is at the middle of day/night, approaching sunset/sunrise, resembling the period of depravity and disorientation.
The sleepless nights of different characters and the dark cinematography of scenes would be evidence of an intoxicating and restless status of the society and people living in there. Tide and So Li-zhen talked the whole night and later he talked with Yuddy when Yuddy wanted to drink until dawn. The static shot shows that time seem not to pass away so easily at these nights; a lot of establishing shots would be used to capture the features of the city (Hong Kong but not Philipines) which expresses a feeling of loneliness in the characters and time of pain and being alone would not easily leave.
Remembering and forgetting is not only about the love stories and feelings of the characters, but also the history of the city and self identity. The 1960 setting for the story matches with the old songs featured in the films give audience impression of the era back into the past, the characters and the stories give the impression of youth and energy, they are still in the mood for passionate love with vigor and vitality. The film name also reminds us of an old film Rebel Without a Cause (1955), the era with a forever memorable star James Dean and his image similar with Yuddy. The setting also remind people of classic Hong Kong culture, the dance ball and nostalgic old song in the background, the local unique restaurant where the characters go to have lunch/tea, etc.
Search of root is a way to find one's existing value and realize the self identity. The bird without legs is a legend, yet a cruel truth to Yuddy as well. Yuddy could not settle down at home because he was homeless since birth. The love from mother is the element he would never receive in his life. He did not choose to become the birds without legs, but the light steps following music and the shot showing his back without return already drive to the conclusion that Yuddy could only be flying till the end and the scene that Yuddy walk further and further away from the camera hints the character would die with the knot and never resolve his issue.
Finally, these love stories are not only occurring in these characters and they would pass along as they are common and all people would be haunted by loving the wrong person or missing the right person. Therefore, the film has allowed a continuity to send us a message about Yuddy's death would not mean his personality's death. Chow Mo-wan's presence would be a metaphor for the society that there are a lot of people like him. In addition, when So opened her mind again and became ready for starting to love again, it has reinitiated the atmosphere for love to enter, meaning hope would continue and the character is still on the ride. Maybe there would be hurt in the journey, however after the event the characters, which resemble you and me, could still stand up and bravely strive for one's own happiness.
After all, everyone would experience the same struggle and painful memory in different ages of their life, however, to remember or to forget is up to everyone's free will. Remembering the experience and learning from it would help shape a better handling of relationship in the future while forgetting the feeling would help relieve the emotional burden of your own self.
Lost: The Package (2010)
Best Sun-Jin centric of the series!
This week's LOST feels like a great comeback. I am generally disappointed with the flash-sideways storyline, especially Recon because Sawyer's episode usually delivers much more emotions and character developments.
Thanks to the beautiful Giacchino traditional score, when Sun unbutton her shirts (o I know I comment it being a guy) is very satisfying on emotional level for the Sun-Jin relationship. Later when Jin is given a first look on Ji Yeon through the digital camera, this is a beautiful scene without a word. Now these moments are what LOST writers promise us with more about characters. Not those random Charlotte dating.
Many good mirrors and references to previous seasons take place in "The Package" as well, randomly finding Shannon's inhaler is not a nod to nostalgia, while Jack's warm tomato speech to Sun perfectly resembles Locke's early days in directing Boone and Charlie. Lost in ability to speak English storyline also ties up well with Locke in "Further Instructions". We are even being invited to "Room 23" once more if some of us thought the writers forgot about it already.
And maybe it's just me, but I love Mikhail's character since he first pops up in season 3. The "destiny to lose an eye" plot works for me.
The island story is also progressing to a much faster pace than the previous 3 episodes combined. Desmond arriving, Widmore reveals his side against MIB. Many clues in previous seasons are raised again in this episode to show the writers never forget what they have said to us. "The war is coming" dialog, Electromagnetism property, Dharma map, Room 23, and most importantly, Desmond's specialness finally would come to play.
Very good reveals and developments, with superb performances from Yunjin Kim and Daniel Dae Kim. Look forward to "Happily Ever After"!!
