Float Like a Butterfly (2018)
A nice little film
With a trip across Ireland in the gypsy community, this feature-length film shows us beautiful landscapes and the interesting Traveller culture. This film is about a teenage girl, Frances, who has idolized Muhammed Ali since she was a kid and who dreams of becoming a boxer. She did not grow with her dad because he was in prison and throughout the film, daughter and father will have to learn how to live together again.
This film also makes us think about the role that women in the gypsy community but also in our society should play. Dreaming of becoming a boxer is always easier when you are a boy and Frances will have to deal with that.
About the film making, I felt like the plot sometimes seemed a little unrealistic but it was nice to watch though.
We need to congratulate the composer, who did a really good job, he managed to give a gypsy touch to his music! We also need to congratulate young Hazel Doupe, who acted Frances and who is a rising star of the Irish cinema. She really held this film together.
Even if I do not think that it was the "film of the year", I would highly recommend it, as a nice little film to watch, maybe not with children but with teenagers. I found this film refreshing and heart-warming and if you are interested in the gypsy culture but also feminism, you will definitely love it.
Also, if you are a fan of Muhammed Ali, you will love the allusion of his famous quote in the tittle.
I mark this film seven out of ten. 👌
