If You're Gone (2019)
A Tough One To Review
It seems that many viewers struggled to review this film, as I did myself, simply based on the unexpected ending. I started to skip this one, until I decided to research the individual for whom the film was dedicated. I was glad to have made the effort as it sort of 'humanized' the overall investment and sacrifice of many just to make the film, thus shifting my perspective from deflated emotions to a more balanced objective. That being said, I give the movie a solid '7' overall for the creative and talent componants, and the forging ahead to complete and bring it to market, as I can imagine the challenge for some in moving forward following the tragedy of a beloved member. As far as recommending, I would probably only do so if by prefacing that the viewer research facts revealed afterwards as I did. I would also highly suggest that they not attempt to do so prior to watching the film. Lastly, I came to final conclusion through writing this, that sometimes, life just doesn't make sense, and we're left to adjust to the truth that "it is what it is" and that's all it is.
Meant to Be (2012)
Thought Provoking, Annoying, and Purposeful
So I just watched the movie without a clue of the plot. I considered turning the channel several times, simply because the music was a bit depressing and at times annoying; the camera person was so wobbly in a few scenes, it was like watching a home movie; and the obvious sales pitch that tends to plague christian scripts is always overkill. However, knowing Dean Cain chose to add his name to the credits was reason enough to press on. He's taken on other low-budget films and one thing they all seem to have in common is a message with purpose, which helps to endure the amateur issues in quest of the hidden nuggets woven inbetween. The overarching value I gleaned from the movie was the unique concept of viewing life from the perspective of the lives 'meant to be' yet unfulfilled through no choice of their own. It's a brilliant viewpoint I've never considered but fully appreciated as well as the power of its truth. It's unfortunate to see reviews that choose to discredit and toss the baby out with the bath water, and the touting 'propaganda', 'right wing', and narrow-minded offenses alike. Will we never be rid of the mean-spirited, bully mentality, and entitled opinions at anyones' expense? We all have a right to speak our view in a respectful manner, and the subject of this movie indeed inflames passionate responses. I think the writers of the movie, 'Meant To Be', made a valiant attempt to represent a sensitive issue on every front with a slant toward presenting a solution for 'two' lives, not just one. It was their dime and free to me, so the least I can offer in return is to consider the effort fairly.
The Baxters (2024)
The Baxter's... A Virtual Show-n-Tell Modeling The Way
Thank you for bringing this series to us. We need it more than ever. The changes, challenges, and struggles faced today are coming so fast, so strong, and so contrary to what we have known, the show is a comfort and gift of hope as the Baxter family reminds us why we are here, what we're to do, and models 'how to' do it. They don't pacify one in need by saying, "we're praying for you". They actually stop and pray in the moment. They address fears and trials we can relate to, and put feet to their faith by showing how to navigate unfamiliar waters we all find ourselves treading in one form or another. Excited for season 4 :)
Emerson Heights (2020)
You had me at 'Austin & Gatlin'!
Just watched the movie, then read reviews and decided not to re-post the storyline, but a review from a different perspective. I was drawn to watch this movie because I recently watched the duo in a riveting movie called, 'His Past Life'. While Austins' talent is undeniable, a sure leading character, and easy on the eyes - Gatlin is adorable and holds her own with acting chops as well. I had not heard of the couple before now, but both were so compelling in the thriller movie, I was prompted to search out other projects they may be in. That's when I learned they are married in real life, with three beautiful children. Regarding this 'Emerson Height' film, Austin is the clear stand-out who carries the film, although it was not near his best performance in comparison to the other movie. But when you understand that this movie was a low-budget family project, that he wrote, produced, and starred in, it's easy to consider that most likely this was more of a passion project overall to convey an important message through the story line. Those attempting to align their motive with a political narrative, is just off-base. Everyone has a right to their beliefs, faith, and opinions; and if these folks chose to put their treasure where their heart is... bravo!
