The Pale Blue Eye (2022)
Another great collaboration between Christian Bale and Scott Cooper
I am a huge fan of Christian Bale and his collaborations with Scott Copper are some of his best work in my opinion. Hostiles and Into the Furnace are both a master class of storytelling due in no small part to Bale's performance in each. Here too in a very reserved performance Christian Bale captivates. It should be mentioned also, that Copper acted along side Robert Duvall in Broken Trail and along Gillian Anderson in an early episode of the X-Files. The cast is excellent and the actor who portrays a young Edgar Allen Poe is exceptional. This was a very enjoyable atmospheric movie and I will admit I did not see the final twist coming. Highly recommended!
White Noise (2022)
Hard pass
The trailer looked interesting albeit a little silly, but what began as a movie about a toxic event quickly devolved into a fear of death as an excuse to have an affair to maintain a supply of experimental medication. What did I just watch? This was not a good movie and the deeper meaning if there was supposed to be one was lost among annoying characters and a convoluted plot. Regardless of the source material there were so many more interesting places they could have gone with this movie based on the way it began. Not sure who is green lighting these projects but they need to be stopped. It just could have been so much better.
Deadwood (2004)
Hands down my favorite show of all time
This in my opinion is the greatest show ever created. I know that's a bold statement but when you combine the linguistic poetry of David Milch with acting greats like Ian McShane, Powers Boothe, Gerald McRaney, Brian Cox and others the result is magic. I enjoyed the 2019 movie that wrapped the show up but nothing would been better than spending another full season or two in the Deadwood camp. If you enjoy compelling stories and great acting Deadwood is the show you need to check out.
You're Next (2011)
A hidden gem
If you're looking for the best in survival horror with a bad a$$ final girl than look no further. I came upon this movie almost by accident and have to say it far exceeded any expectations I had. I wish more movies were this exciting!
Cold Brook (2018)
A beautiful ride
Cold Brook is not your typical Hollywood movie and I mean that in the best way possible. There is no sex, violence, gun battles or explosions. What this movie does have is a heart felt story and 2 lead actors with great chemistry. Don't miss this movie!
Outpost (2008)
Hugely underrated
I'm not sure if this movie received a theatrical release in the US. I came across it as an online rental. The trailer hooked me, but what the movie turned out to be was much much more. The atmosphere of the movie set the tone for what was to come. The performances were all excellent with Ray Stevenson's performance being exceptional. A great rainy day movie. A great October movie. If you're in the mood for a movie about undead Nazi's...look no further!
Game Night (2018)
The most fun I've had at the movies in years!
I had high hopes going into this movie just based off the trailer and I was not disappointed. This movie was great. It exceeded the trailer and was fun from start to finish. The cast was excellent and the after credits scenes leave me wondering when we're going to get treated to a sequel. Don't miss seeing this movie!
Then There Was (2014)
Much better than expected
A well paced, well acted movie with a plausible premise. Louis Mandylor does an excellent job in the directors chair. The cast is solid and believable. This movie does an excellent job depicting the collapse of basic humanity in a small town during a large scale power outage. Costas Mandylor is the real stand out of the film as the war veteran who has opted for a life of solitude and preparedness after losing his wife. His character never feels forced or over the top. His performance feels genuine and somber. Bill Sage also turns in a great performance as the town sheriff trying to keep order in a town full of fearful residents. All in all a very good and underrated movie. From its opening shots to its unsettling finale The Blackout is an unsettling that will have you rechecking your supplies to make sure you're ready to survive a long term power outage.
