Dune (2021)

Just Wow

Being mindful of the subjective nature of art, there are rare films that come along where you are transported, body and mind, into another world, another reality. These kinds of films are akin to a spiritual experience. Dune is just such a film.

It manages to world build at the pace where the viewer begins as though awakening from a star voyage and stepping into the corner of the cosmos where the story takes place. It does not try to tell you everything about everyone. Simply put, it does not explain itself. It lives it's own story and you are invited along. So much so that by the end, you feel as though you have just lived a life along side the characters.

In short, whether a fan of the books or just looking for something worthwhile to watch, Dune will not disappoint.

Halo (2022– )

Would be perfect if they would get ride of Kwan

Enjoying the show, the action, the actors, even the Forerunner tech (game departures aside), but OMG for the love of sanity can someone please shoot Kwan?!

It's like every time I'm getting into the story I'm suddenly dealing with a Rey Palpatine wanna be who is more fixated on her dusty rock tribe's little rebellion than the incredibly advanced aliens that are raining from the sky.

That aside, the rest of the show has been really good si-fi fun. Pretty well paced story wise, just enough character development without anything overshadowing the fact that this is a story about enhanced human super soldiers vs. Aliens.

The Sandman (2022– )

No idea what the low reviews are about

This is my new favorite show. The scope of philosophical problems these eleven episodes manage to do justice to is beyond incredible. The acting is superb and the resolutions to the tangles leaves everything and nothing to be desired. Even those few moments where it seemed as if the the writers were copping out with a MacGuffin, a secondary watching disproves this notion.

If you are looking for a sparkly Marvel-esq showdown of powers and special effects with a simple and familiar story arc where the power of friendship, believing in yourself, or "it was inside you along" are the long and short of resolution and character development, you will be disappointed....

However, if you are willing to put in the mental effort, to view the main characters as all of us, the sum of the human experience, from our pettiest tiffs, to our darkest manifestations, our smallest kind acts to greatest sacrifice, even for its own sake, you will find in this gem something to walk away with, and indeed, see in your dreams.

No complaints, brilliant execution.

It's rare to be able to say that a screen adaption of a book (or series in this case) with a solid fan base does full justice to the source material. Personally, this was the first time I lost no interest and did not roll my eyes at any point in my two day binge of the entire show. Very much looking forward to season 2.
