Nikki Glaser: Bangin' (2019)
More Great Work By Great Comedian
I haven't quite put it together, but there was something unique in the way Nikki put this together...something about the way it was shot and produced. Right off the bat, due to the intimate space, she is able to connect with the viewer with her thank you. (Rory Scovel did something similar but it didn't connect like that).
I know some people will say, as I've read for years, that she is "off-putting." But those are just people who can watch hours of male comedians discuss identical topics without issue. So they can deal with their own issues.
This is a great example of how she is a great storyteller, who has some great jokes...but often the best "jokes" are simply the timing of an aside, the throwing off of something like "sept 11" and so on.
I really like this special. I will say, though, I ADORED the "Perfect" special and pretty much every appearance she made on @midnight. This is definitely worth a watch.

You Need to Be Watching This
Carla Gugino is pitch perfect, and should be making many a producer and casting director wonder why they didn't anchor previous series/films at Port Gugino. Whether on stage or screen, she has always had a unique and special presence, and it makes this engine go. Many shows have great performances, but there are some where it is almost inconceivable for the show to work without the specific actors that held the roles. (Olyphant and Goggins in JUSTIFIED is a great example.)
The structure is also worth a mention. The focus on one character and his/her subplot, allowing for enough info to come out to keep you from being lost, but leaving enough at bay and at risk to keep the stakes continuing up and up.
Sebastian has done his best work. Great performances make that work...work.
