Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Horror? Pardon me?
I don't care if this movie has "jump scares" or "more darkness than the average Marvel movie". This is a superhero film. Marvel exclusively makes superhero films. Marvel is trying to reach their hands into as many categories as possible, and it seems it's gotten to, out of all things, the horror genre. In times like this when the box office is controlled by one genre, the horror community has to stay strong to even survive. We must prove that exciting movies do exist outside the realm of superheroes.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
What's with all the hate?
I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure. It felt very much like a blockbuster, but the good kind. The kind where you actually get invested in the characters instead of just making your eyes dart side to side with explosions. The special effects are top-notch, and it's fascinating to see how far they've come since The Philosopher's Stone. Don't listen to the haters, they're just jealous that they're not as cool as J. K. Rowling's imaginary creatures.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Amazingly animated film soiled by miserable modern messages
Raya and the Last Dragon is by far one of the most beautiful-looking films to come out of Walt Disney Pictures. But looks can be deceiving. The plot is extremely by-the-numbers, sprinkled with unfunny attempts at humor trying to be "down with the kids". And the message at the end of the film? I am not one to complain about a film's morals (in fact I directly oppose those who review a film solely based on if they agree with the film's point of view), but there are some risky mixed messages at the end that definitely give off some abusive vibes and could lead to dangerous situations if one were to take the movie's advice. This is a gorgeous film, but it's better to leave on as a pretty background rather than pay attention to it.
Field of Dreams (1989)
Overrated, outlandish, and less than okay
I seriously do not understand the love that this movie gets. It is pretty much the Generic Uplifting Feel-Good Movie (tm) on drugs. The plot is absolutely nonsensical and confusing, but somewhat predictable. The main characters are absolutely insane, and there are no stakes in the movie. It is beyond me how this was nominated for an Oscar.
A Tale of Two Cities (1980)
A laughably lamentable limitation of Dickens' legacy
This movie took me at least three days to get through because of its poor quality. The actors didn't seem to quite understand the true meaning of their characters, and many moments almost felt comedic in a strange way. At least my favorite character, Madame Defarge, was taken seriously. I will always remember this film, not as an adaptation, but as a parody.
Brave New World (2020)
A dishonorable disappointment to Huxley's life and work
This series is what blurs the line between "based on" and "original screenplay". You can't quite feel Aldous Huxley's scathing satire, and the abundance of sexual scenes is exactly the point of the "Feelies" in the original book. One must wonder if the show's creators really did read the book, or just a loose synopsis.
Poltergeist (1982)
A stupendous spawning of special effects
Poltergeist is one of my favorite films in the horror genre. Extreme jump scares and kills are not necessary here, only the creepy tension present in the film from start to finish. The special effects are some of my favorite in all of cinema, and it saddens me to know that these types of effects are long gone in the modern day. This film reminds me that there is beauty in terror and terror in beauty.
Nightmare Alley (2021)
A notably dark non-traditional noir
"Nightmare Alley" is a beautiful, character-driven period piece influenced by the carnival culture of the 1940s and infused with psychological concepts. Its gorgeous cinematography and deep allusions to the wonders of the mind make it a gorgeous slow burn film.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
The most fun I've ever had in the theaters
I don't typically care for modern-day remakes and sequels, but this movie absolutely blew me away. The new characters are very fleshed out, however there's still enough references to the original to make any Ghostbusters fan (including myself) squeal with joy. This is absolutely the best comedy I've seen in the last few years.
