A Chorus Line (1985)
NOT "A Chorus Line"
This is one of the worst film adaptations of a musical ever made. The stage version of A Chorus Line is wonderful. This movie misses the mark in almost every way. Even the casting is baffling. Take Audrey Landers as Val. "Dance 10 Looks 3" is Val's song. Val's story is that she is a great dancer but a 3 in the looks department. Yes, she finds a solution, but ultimately she's a great dancer. What do the brilliant filmmakers do? They hire an actress who can't dance and is famous for looking great. Way to miss the boat.
Then there's the choreography. I'm sure Michael Bennett was turning over in his grave. Why didn't they use his choreography? It really can't be improved upon.
Life on Mars (2008)
Life on Mars
In NYC where I live you can watch the original British version of Life on Mars on the BBC America cable station. I heard about the show a few weeks ago and taped one of the British episodes, but it's really hard to get into a show like this in the middle. I saw the pilot of the American show last night and it seems interesting. Michael Imperioli was great, imo. I thought he was the only actor who never seemed out of place. It's an amazing cast, but no one else gelled for me. Not in the 70's or in the present time period. It's like a great group of actors came together and no one could get them to agree on what sort of show they were doing. It also made me miss NYPD Blue.
Still, I'll probably watch Life on Mars-USA again... see what develops. There's a lot of promise there.
I had been watching Journeyman online and while I enjoyed it (Kevin McKidd is amazing), Life on Mars has more edge and reality than Journeyman. I might also try finding the BBC Life on Mars online and watching that from the beginning. What's the deal with BitTorrent?
