Things You Should Have Done (2024)
Well done Chi
I have seen Chi on socials for many years now and she has a real talent for writing and creativity. Plus she can sing! I'm so happy to see she was given the opportunity to make this series, some reviews seem rather harsh and considering the 'reviewers' review history (click on their name and scroll down) I don't think it's hard to spot the Karens.
Anyway! This is a mix of Stath and This country and of course Chia with a C! Give it a go it's proper mad and light hearted. It's more for the younger gen and those with a sense of humour not just Kevin the Karen who only writes bad reviews for fun and doesn't actually appreciate the effort of writing and creating a TV series.
Easy watching.
Accused (2023)
Highly relevant
In our cancel culture/witch hunt world it is important to highlight the impact on innocent victims. Also of course touches on general racism. The main actor is fantastic and I would love to see him in other things. I liked how quick the story unfolded at the start and the mid way build up towards the final few scenes of drama. It's a great film for date night nothing too much to think about and really interesting take on a modern day issue.
The old lady scenes were frustrating and possibly not very realistic (why would an old lady not just call the police) but then I guess it wouldn't be much of a film of it was that easy!
I Am...: I Am Ruth (2022)
Realiatic
I really e joy British films, with low budgets and a bit of imagination they really do give us a taste of grit. Kate Winslet is a fantastic actor as too is her Daughter. I love the natural bond which meant the tears were real it was Heartfelt. This is an important subject, teenagers are important and I think parents will inevitably get to this point with their child one way or another. It doesn't really matter if the plot revolves around social media, all teenagers and parents will have stand-offs and no-one is to blame in this particular situation.
I think the portrayal of the middle-class mum is actually accurate from all the white middle class mums I know of it's exactly how they live, behave, act ect.
It's a gentle film and one worth watching if you're a fan of Winslet and current affairs. Teenagers will enjoy it also for their POV.
The Witchfinder (2022)
Niche humour
It's just fun and you don't need to over think it. Witty and warm. BBC do have a habit of casting people with West Country accents to play people from the east though.. Totally different accent dears.
Loved the two main characters together, great comedy timing and well thought out. An easy watch.
Not for everything but when is comedy? Some people like things like Mrs Brown's boys..! Says it all about BBC viewers.
Boiling Point (2021)
If you have ever worked in hospitality..
It's niche, I guess. Then again we have all eaten in restaurants if we haven't all worked in one. I ahve worked in small restaurants and large ones, over stressful periods and this film captures everyday moments in restaurants uo and down the country/world.
It doesn't need drama or even humour. It's realistic, shot in single shot which gives us a real time perspective. When you work in a restaurant it's fast paced, it's chaotic and it's demanding mentally and physically.
I thunk the film shows us how 'up against it' hospitality businesses are in the UK. The laws, regulations, social pressures, costs, lack of ambition within the industry. Its all relative.
The actors do a fantastic job, it couldn't have been easy logistically easy to shoot this. I really enjoyed it as someone who has been there and done that.
It has a message and it is a story. It's a satisfying watch because the acting is spot on, the story is spot on.
The Lost Daughter (2021)
Mothers will relate
Some people are confused about eh 'Lost daughter' reference, I think I can help..
Leda mentions not wanting her daughters to love with her mum. This suggests she didn't have a great upbringing herself, along with not having much support from her own mother during the early years. Leda had children fairly young (24 but she wasn't really ready mentally?) she is a lost daughter..
Leda's daughters are lost, wondering why their mother never really liked them that much, so much so that she left. Leda lost out on time with them due to her mental health. They are lost daughters.
The little girl at the beach is clearly lost for a little while. She is a lost daughter
The doll signifies the lost time Leda had with her own daughters. The doll is lost, she is a lost daughter to the little girl.
The little girls mum (Dakota Johnson) is lost.
As a woman, a mum, a mum who doesn't like being a mum, I understood it fully. My husband did not!
It's long winded and awkward, very uneasy but probably very relatable.
