Negative (2017)
A story about a spy and a photagrapher, in a drama (thriller).
The focus is on the two leads that are on the run from assassins. Now, the reason to why they meet and have to flee together is probably the most far fetched I've seen. Other than that the story holds up. The movie does not try to make suspense every corner but instead focus on building the characters from their dialog and actions. If you only like action and less talking, this is not the movie for you.
The somewhat dorky dialog evolves as the characters warm up to each other. Some would say the dialog was boring of coarse, to me it felt more real than most other movies in the genre.
A lot of story probably got cut along the making process. There were several things I felt was left out that could have lifted the story.
The actors did a solid job, specially Katia Winter was really god portraying a tough skinned spy with a conscious. Simon Quaterman did a good job as the "out of his comfort zone"-wimp but were struggling at times when some purer emotions where required.
I enjoyed this movie, but I probably wont see it again.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Unbothering mess of a story
Does a TV-show adaptation need to be true to it's source? I don't think so, not to the letter. Much needs to be adapted for it to work on screen. Otherwise it will be impossible to follow.
Books often explain things through the thoughts of the characters. That never translates well to the screen. Great screen storytelling manages to explain alot through cinematography, music and good acting.
How is the storytelling in this TV show? So, so bad..
And that has nothing to do with the source material.
Just a short explaining of the books:
They are very focused on the main characters development. They start as novices and grow through hardship and changes along the way.. Some don't change much, some become new personas. The main characters are equally woman and men. With different strengths on a character level apposed to gender. Even though at it's core there are overly strong gender roles similar to a medieval society. This is what makes the story live and feel real even though it is in a completely fantastical world.
The TV show seems to want the character development at a bare minimum, giving them their late story personalities early on.
Also, expect abilities come unearned to characters from strong emotions instead from training and discipline.
The TV show obviously want to amp woman and be "woke", so lots of that. The gender roles feels fabricated and unreal.
If entering a distant medieval village you'd probably expect to find that people are mostly of the same race.
Not in this show.. All races equally represented and they are in modern cross relationships, so how they keep the diversity through time is beyond me.
The cast are struggling to make us care. The dialog are boring and uninformative.
The cinematography kind of jumps in and out of medium to high budget.
The entire season feels so rushed and skips lots of world building and character introduction just to get far into the story.
My girlfriend who hasn't read the books had real problems understanding why things happen. Me, I kind of understood, but so much is changed that I just feel despair..
