The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Hmm?
Let's be clear. This was painful to watch. After you complete the film, your kind truly ponders why it was even made. But if you think back to the beginning, there is a mention of Warner Bros. Then it all makes sense; WB was gonna do this film regardless. They didn't care if the original directors were involved or not, they were gonna make this film. So it seems that Wachowski made a parody of the original film series that was kinda lazy quite honestly. It has some elements of the old films such as the use of bullet time (although not as brilliantly as in the past) and some of the acrobatics during fight scenes. And it introduce some ideas that were discarded from the previous films such as Neo's super hero, two hand blast thing (I'm sure it has a name) but it wasn't interesting.
Matrix fans should watch it out of curiosity but if they decide to do this again in the future, please put some thought into it. For us.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
Personal favorite
It's one of the rare times that I've found a movie that i can watch over and over and still be excited about it.
I won't give a summary here but I will tell what I loved about it. First, I believe the spirit world exists but I'm not 100 percent sure how or if it interacts with the physical world. This film succeeds in making a person question whether some known psychiatric illnesses are in fact, spiritual attacks. I'm a nurse so I've studied and given medicine for mental disorders such as schizophrenia and oddly enough, many of my patients talk more of God and demons during exacerbation of these illnesses. So is it just the brain or is there more going on that we can't see? This movie asks the audience to decide while not forcing either viewpoint. Even the more supernatural elements of the film can be explained away as hysteria or power of suggestion. I enjoyed this treatment of Emily's condition.
The performances are so believable. In the scenes that portrays Emily as fearful, we can feel it. And the scenes with Linney and Wilkinson, though brief, are powerful.
The film really pulls you in and makes you question the world in which we live as well as being entertaining.
Drumline: A New Beat (2014)
Whew
So I heard a saying that if you don't expect anything, then you won't be disappointed. That's not true in this case; i expected little and received less. The acting is forced and unnatural. In the first film, the actors seemed like they had the type of camaraderie that you see with teams. They may have hated each other off set but they were definitely believable. In this film, they come off as soap opera characters. Part of that is the script. They introduced some new characters that have a past with each other but are brand new to the audience. I just don't care for that because i watch sequels for familiarity and tie-ins. So Sean and the dean felt forced.
Other beefs is that they take long pauses which slows the pacing of the film and adds to the soapy feel.
The redeeming qualities are seeing the band perform and I'm glad they brought Roberts and Cannon back since their dynamic was the most interesting in the first film. I miss Dr. Lee though; Orlando Brown always gives great performances and he is underrated.
