The Marvels (2023)
Nice visuals, but a bit disney for adults
This was a a movie I was excited to see, as a fan that is waiting on baited breath for a return to the aligned, coordinated, well constructed, end-in-mind plot driven directing of the Thanos sequence, I went to The Marvels hopeful that this was the start of that journey!
It wasn't.
Instead it was another high budget movie that doesn't deliver any kind of strategic direction, it has a big bunch of plot holes and, honestly Disney a singing planet!!??!! Call it a disney movie why don't you, and don't begin to create a sing fest under the Marvel name. Shang chi introduced cuddly disney marketable creatures under the Marvel heading... what's next I wonder, cameo roles from mickey, A goofy member of the guardians. Don't do that, you've sullied enough, no more sulliing.
On the plus side, i can see that the team enjoyed making the movie, there is for sure some "connection" that plays out between the characters, alas this does little to enhance the movie.
For me, it is time to put the nostalgic wanna-be to bed, to move on from being hopeful of a return to the Thanos-that-was and leave the Marvel-Disney fest to the child demographic that applauds it.
Now... where is deadpool 3?!
Moonfall (2022)
Great little action movie
Negative movie critics these days want something different than what this movie offers and they will never be satisfied, This movie is about the moon falling into earth, if it doesn't make sense to you, then have a word, Does Avengers make sense? DC? Super man isn't real, flying is impossible. The moon doing what it does and people doing what they do in this film is impossible. But it is fun. This movie is visually stunning, fast paced and wastes no time on scenes that mean nothing to the plot. Honestly, a fun space romp with a little humour and some amazing scenes. Loved it.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
If you have the time....
... then this version is a story way better told than the original and worth a watch! It didn't feel rushed as the first version. After that, then everything else is just a great fun action movie that has loads of good-looking, athletic and funny actors portraying some of the strongest supper heroes DC has to offer.
Good work.
Guns Akimbo (2019)
Fun action romp
Is like "Scott pilgrim versus the world" meets "John Wick".
Fun. Colourful. Creative.
Also, good to see Daniel Radcliffe in films; like when did become an adult... he is amazing.
The Stand (2020)
Read book, watch film
Great acting. High production value. Read the book first otherwise the sequencing makes no sense. It is a great story, this has the potential to be improved if they could resequence it.
Army of the Dead (2021)
enjoyable zombie romp through vegas
Well i enjoyed it, i do like a good zombie movie! This one has guns and everything!
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Enjoyable action movie
Loved this, good pace and never lost its momentum, great characters, and funny in all the right places. DC locations on message and all casting choices approved by me.
Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
Amazing Spider man
Hats off to the first Avenge movie since Endgame. Loved every minute of it, classic Spidey coming of age mixed with mega bad guys. Mysterio was amazing; Jake is such a great actor. Spidey was awesome and the dialogue just right.
The first proper Spidey and bad guy fight scene was so incredible I actually felt hopeless. One of the best experiences I have ever had in the cinema since the Matrix.
OMG -so good. I will watch it again.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Just what I hoped it would be!
This is a well presented, fun, action packed monster romp with everyone's favourite king of the monsters. 30 stories high, Godzilla.
Eleven from Stranger Things was in it, she was good although there was no "upside down" in this one.
If I would improve one thing, use more of the 17 titans. We only saw a few of them. Probably didn't finish designing them in time for release.
No Godzuke, which was something of a disappointment especially in this day and age. I was brought up on ja ja Binks, so in my opinion all movies need a Ja Ja to distract you from other plot holes but there was nothing in this movie that even remotely ruined it. Simon Pegg was at the start with medicinema, so i was thinking star wars from the get go.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
Action movie, small plot, minimal dialogue....
....and AMAZING for it! Keanu moves like a ninja and there are so many subtle nods to martial arts movies of times past.
Cannot wait for more of these movies. Gonna go home and watch the Raid now!!
Dunkirk (2017)
Poor acting, bad plot
I heard good things, friends said best movie they've seen, it even won awards. It was rubbish. Slow. Plot was thin. I was really excited too watch it as well.
Jupiter Ascending (2015)
Enjoyable movie!
If you like sic-fi action adventures then this is the movie for you. Explosive action scenes filled with amazing special effects and sic-fi toys bridged with fast moving plot fillers. Simple movie but worth checking out. Seriously, the first 20 minutes where so filled with action that I couldn't pull away. Great stuff and good work Wachowski bro's.
Milna Kunis is stunning and she partners well with Channing Tatum, the film isn't a love story, it is about a girl from Earth who is destined for greatness and how she has to fight to claim her right.
Films like this are hard to come by so don't miss out because of undeserved poor ratings, there appear to be too many haters of this film on the site, definitely should be getting more that 5 stars.
The Avengers (2012)
Best movie I have seen in a long time!
What can I say, you have to see this movie. Some of the best action I have ever seen on the big screen. It didn't suffer from American cheese in the way that I though it might and it had a solid plot.
Loved it, absolutely loved it.
From the outset this movie captures your imagination and attention, all the previous movies come together perfectly; Fury is a great character and Samuel plays the part well. Thor is easily as convincing as he was in his debut movie and Robert Downey Jr. plays a great Stark.
There is just the right amount of humour and just the right amount of quiet moments. Just letting you catch your breath before the next visually stunning, action spectacular.
Since I was a kid I haven't wanted to be a super hero, but right now I want to be an Avenger.
The River (2012)
Another money maker
I Want a story that is planned, written from the outset with a start, a middle and an end. Not one that tries to define itself as it goes and not one that leaves itself open for a sequel that promises nothing more but more laboured excuses for a sojourn through the whittled mind of an underpaid writer trying to justify his (or her) existence.
The River started OK, I won't go into the professional camera work that occurs throughout on what should be hand-held cameras because that is a petty put down that the show doesn't deserve. However there was professional camera work throughout that detracted from the fact that this was recovered footage. :-)
The acting was OK. Although the bird that was Jack Bauer's wife in 24 is equally as annoying in this. I wouldn't want to watch another series of this, but most of all what I really wanted was for this to be a stand alone series that started and finished.
Please Fox, ABC or whoever just write a good story that makes sense.
The Invisible (2007)
Enjoyable but missed the mark
I was flicking between giving this a 6 or a 7 out of 10 during the film but toward the end it dropped to a 5 or a 6. I chose 6 because it was enjoyable, the acting is good as the characters are well played but the plot kind of loses its way.
Other than the main plot, it has an undercurrent theme about parent and child relationships and the effects this has on the children in teenage life; it's not in your face this theme but it is present and supports the main story well.
The main story is summed up sufficiently in the product description.
Cheers Mike
