The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Absolutely Awful
A butchery of Tolkien's work. This atrocity is not even loosely based on anything Tolkien wrote regarding the second age. Why would you buy the rights to LotR, appendices, and the Hobbit to make a show on the second age? Might it be more useful to obtain the rights to books like the Silmarillion?
Worse, nothing happens in this show. The writing is terrible and goes nowhere. There are more Amazon created characters and side plots than any of characters we want to see. Characters that should be present, thinking of you Celeborn, aren't and the characters that are present are made into complete buffoons or are completely repulsive.
I was cautiously optimistic that maybe this could be good until I saw Amazon's adaption of Wheel of Time. At that point, I was almost positive they were about to trash Tolkien in the same way. How can you spend this much money on a show and have it come out as such garbage? The fans will literally tell you what they want to see, but you somehow take a 180 and head the opposite direction.
Terror on the Prairie (2022)
Really wanted to like it
I wanted it to be good. I really did. It was awful. Can't hit the broad side of a barn with a shotgun? Chooses not to shoot multiple times when she could have pretty much reached out and touched them...so maybe she could actually hit something. And I'm sorry, those guys would have been fed up real early on and just killed her. They didn't give us much explanation on why they kept her alive...especially after she'd killed one of their number. The guy in charge said he had never hurt a woman or child, but he later says one of the other guys has..and he is fine with the guy doing it. They could have easily taken her out and still ambushed the husband when he came home. Speaking of the husband, instead of ambushing them and offing them quickly he decides to just jump on one of them without his gun drawn and immediately be put in a standoff that he'll of course lose because they have his wife. And he didn't seem like much of a sharpshooter until that final shot. He wasn't hitting anything before that. Man, I really did want to like the movie, but it was just bad. I will say that I, unlike some others, was fine with the minimalist take on the score. I think it works for the desolate type setting in this movie. But overall, I have to give it like a 3/10. Definitely not a movie I would recommend or ever feel the need to watch again.
Moon Knight (2022)
Another Letdown
Another show that is exactly what you'd expect from Disney Marvel these days. It's called Moon Knight, but Moon Knight has maybe 12-13 minutes of screen time across the season. Instead, more diverse female character comes in and is better than Moon Knight in every way. He tells her how amazing she is while she is constantly saving him. She actually turns down being Moon Knight at one point, though it is at least said later that the offer wasn't serious, but ends up overshadowing him in his own finale by becoming another hero and saving him some more.
We also get yet another nonsensical plot where people have to constantly do extremely stupid things for the plot to advance. Layla brings the scarab back with her and announces it to the bad guys after she gets away, but then decides to come back to rescue Steven/Marc. Bad guy leaves scarab on dead body of Marc for Layla to pick up so she can conveniently track them. Etc., etc., etc.
Then we don't even get to see pretty much any action. They don't want to spend money on a good script or effects. You quickly realize they're utilizing the multiple personalities to save money by not showing fights. Other fights conveniently happen once the character is off-screen and we just see the aftermath. Only Khonshu and Ammit show up to fight in the temple. The other gods conveniently just have their avatars be there to fight as middle-aged businessmen/women.
The MCU has been spiraling out of control since Endgame. They clearly have no plan, but are unwilling to admit it. And they don't want to spend the money to make anything of quality.
Hawkeye (2021)
Painful to Watch
Does Hawkeye finally get his time to shine after being a bit overshadowed in the Avengers? No, not here. The show may be called Hawkeye, but this is the Kate Bishop show. And this series is yet another example showing that the days of character development are far behind us.
Kate Bishop's story is that she saw Hawkeye once and decided he was cool. We then just get an animated intro to explain that she is now awesome at everything before being taken back to present day. How are you supposed to get invested in a character that did pretty much all her growth off screen? She literally says she is sometimes called the greatest archer ever in episode 1 or 2. It's honestly a joke.
No effort was put forth in this show, and Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye was done dirty. And don't even get me started on how they managed to destroy Kingpin's character in 30 seconds. All that buildup and Hawkeye and Kingpin don't even have an interaction. Instead we get Kate fighting him. He would have and should have completely wiped the floor with her, but instead she somehow comes out on top. Watching these shows is honestly painful at this point.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
How Far Can Star Wars Fall?
When on screen, Boba Fett is either taking off his helmet so he can monologue, or getting his a$$ kicked, letting someone else take over the fight, and then showing up when the fight is over. Need I say more?...well, maybe. Power rangers on hover Vespas and depressed rancors. That is all.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Even Worse Than I Imagined
I came into this fully expecting to get more of the "man bad, woman good" stuff that we have been getting in every form of media nowadays. I hoped to look past that and find a show that, at least for the most part, respected the lore and paid homage to a great fantasy series. I should have known better.
Amidst all the woke narrative stuff that is in 90% of what comes out of Hollywood these days, we got a show that unceremoniously throws all of that out the window...whether it character's plotline or the rules relating to the one power. Even worse, it seems those in charge of the show can't even keep the rules regarding the use of the one power straight because they constantly contradict themselves in action and dialogue.
Apparently, the showrunners thought they could tell a better story...they were wrong. This show is just another victim to Hollywood feeling like everything needs to be injected with some politics. I wish they had stuck with the politics in the books rather than forcing their own into it. There are a few fleeting moments where you see what could have been, but then you are immediately snapped back to reality with a bad character design, characters contradicting themselves, interrogations with apparently incompetent interrogators, and a healthy dose of every new thing has to be woker than the last politics.
I really wish they had done the books justice. As it is, my worst fears were realized and I am now all the more terrified that these people also have their hands on Tolkien's work.
