Avassaladoras (2002)
Please, Don't think it's a Brazilian cinema masterpiece
Well, well. Brazilian movie industry is in full swing again. But it still does some piece of crap. And I can tell you that this movie is an example. This is a 'soap opera-like' movie. Silly plot, corny jokes, a great deal of cliché. And that's it. The movie tries to be funny, but, of course, it isn't. It tries to be philosophical, and it fails again. If there's something worth seeing in this movie, it is Caco Ciocler (tha Arabian guy) which performs a delighting role. He is, that's for sure, one of the most talented actors in Brazilian's new generation. That's it, a silly movie deserves a short and shallow comment. If you like good movies, don't waste your time watching this. And don't think this is a typical Brazilian film. We've got better things. You bet.
The Fisher King (1991)
Outstanding. 90's top 5.
The Fisher King (1991) - Directed by: Terry Gilliam
I was just wandering at the video arcade, when I found this movie by chance. I liked the title, and decided to rent it. I thought to myself "Come on, this must be a great movie. It's a Gilliam's movie!". and I can say: this is one of the best movie I've ever seen. The story is about two guys. One is a depressive DJ, who has suicidal tendencies due to a mistake he made and which led to the murder of seven people at a bar. The other one is a former history professor, who went crazy and turned into a bagger after his wife's death. They meet each other in an evening when Jack (the DJ) is about to be set on fire by some boys. Pattry (the beggar) avoids the tragedy and saves Jack's life. The other day Jack finds out that Pattry's wife was killed in the mass murder that happened at a bar, and for which he has been feeling guilty for the last three years. Here the movie really begins.
Jack decides to help Pattry as way to help himself, and they become great friends. It's not interesting to tell by what means Jack helps Pattry. Just let me tell you that he finds redemption in his good deeds. He finds love. He finds life. It's a modern tale, with stunning performances by Robin Williams, Jeff Bridges, Mercedes Ruehl (which won the Oscar for best actress in a supporting role on account of her performance in this movie) and all the rest. I would give 10 out of 10 for this movie. Why? Well, it has an amazing story, fantastic dialogues, great performances, what else can we expect from a movie? I wish our lives could be like a tale. A Gilliam's tale, of course. A movie which won't be forgotten soon. And which is really worth seeing.
