13 Reasons Why (2017–2020)

A necessary review, for a necessary show
13 September 2017
This seems to be one of those love it or hate it shows (at least as reflected in the reviews), and I felt it deserved an objective (subjective) review. I personally feel all the 'bad' things about this series are intentional and that while I myself got annoyed many times whilst watching it, it didn't detract from its quality.

The bottom line is, this does what it does really well. There is a valid argument that none of the characters are particularly likable. Well, have you ever been to high school? A lot of the negative reviews seem to stem from not being able to sympathise with Hannah as a character because of her flaws. I think these people may have been expecting a series glorifying and victimising the girl who took her life, but I don't think that's what this was about. I think the whole narrative illustrated a balanced account that acknowledged that Hannah herself was not perfect.

I'll try to be brief. Let's assume the acting, pacing, music, plot, etc etc were great. Let's also be aware that there are significant plot holes, and that in real life, this would play out way differently. But it's a story. A work of fiction. A character study and several important questions. It seems to take the clichés of all high school 'characters' and throw them in an uncompromising situation forcing them to look at their actions. It's basically taking all the caricatures from high school fictions over the years and saying "okay but what if your actions had real consequences?"

I think you should watch this show. I don't think you should try and take any real message from it other than don't be a d*ck, talk to people, and recognise that there is a world outside your high school years. It portrays a really good explanation that truly makes you understand why she did what she did, but it also lets you agree with the opinion that most people go through a version of this stuff, and the hope is that you realise it's temporary and that life goes on.

I think the fact that this show divided its viewers is a demonstration of its success - that's how the people of the school reacted to the character's suicide. Watch it and make your own mind up. Just watch it. And look out for each other. And know that it's okay to not be okay, and it's good to talk about it.

This film will change your life
15 July 2010
It's one of those serendipitous moments in life when you stumble upon a work of genius. Such a moment happened to me today as this film found its way onto my screen. I had no expectations, no preconceptions, and no idea what to expect, and I have to say I was utterly blown away.

This is one of those films that could never be simply described. An ultimately dark story of true companionship. Love definitely plays an essential part, but I think "Love story" gives the wrong impression. It is the adventure of two children, traveling through America and their childhood alike, dealing with an unfair handful or hurdles and hardships. The direction is impeccable, and allows the gifted young actors to excel to their full potential. Everything in this film is meticulously brilliant, and so refreshingly intelligent. It's unusual these days to find a film that doesn't patronize its audience. It is almost poetic in the way it gives as few words as possible. Some people may find this slow and boring, but these are people who fail to see between the lines, where the true story lies.

A film both heartwarming and heart-wrenching that will sharpen your braincells, moisten your cheeks, and really make you think about yourself and the life you lead.

whether or not you like Shakespeare, this is just simply fantastic
25 May 2007
This has been a film i have wanted to see on and off for some time, and today i finally got a chance to watch it! Though I had waited some time to see this film, my expectations of it weren't extremely high; i expected it to be a light hearted romantic comedy, however i was very, very impressed. The performances were excellent, both Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Afflecks English accents were flawless, as were everyone's performances, and they really brought Romeo and Juliet to life. i thought it was cleverly directed, and well thought through, resulting in maximum laughs and also maximum tears. Though this is essentially a romantic comedy, it is genuinely touching, and has some truly tear jerking moments. I was expecting to enjoy watching this film once, and then not miss it if i never saw it again, however i will definitely be keeping hold of this one, as i know I will want to see it many more times. I myself am not a particular fan of Shakespeare, or anything set before the nineteenth century really, but this blew me away, and i am proud to have seen it. whether or not you like Shakespeare, this film is just plain brilliant, and will leave with a big sad smile on your face, and maybe even a couple of wet eyes. genius.
