Martin Milner worth the look!
29 November 2009
So this movie is silly? It has plenty of charm and light heartedness! It's innocent and funny. It's really worth a look especially if you're a (female) Martin Milner fan! You can find this on video currently at www.thevideobeat.com It was worth the purchase because it had been so long since I had seen it and it was only more charming since I've become older. Mickey Rooney as the devil? Can you imagine Andy Hardy in a padded snake suit? I found that extremely hilarious, just that alone! I'm not really a fan of Mamie Van Doren, so her part is difficult to watch (though I'm sure she would be a sight for the male audience). All in all, the cast is excellent, the story is sweet. I honestly can't understand why the decency brigade tagged it...I know things were strict growing up, but there's really nothing dirty at all about it...unless you have a really filthy mind?

Not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be!
5 June 2009
"Dude's" is for those who believe that films are *entertainment* as opposed to "works of art". "Dudes" is a great buddy film, a little shocking at times, poignant at times, fun at times, sad at times and great most times. It's a road trip, buddy film that showcases some under promoted great actors such as Lee Ving, who plays the bad guy o the hilt. The soundtrack alone is worth watching for. You will find yourself rooting for the good guy at the end. So it didn't win ten Oscars? It's a sort of twist that hasn't been done before...we always see the rude reception of country folk when they go to the "big city" for the first time, but this is a flip of that. I don't care what some people say...I LOVED this film!!

Bette's the best!
20 March 2006
As a fan of Bette Davis, going all the way back to her first films, I can honestly say this was a good film. If you're one of those sticklers who complain about everything, don't watch it. I;m not one of those type of people, but found myself wondering how even Peter Lawford, her rich (dead) sisters lover couldn't tell the difference. You actually get to meet "Margaret" and shes flamboyant and on the arrogant side, while her sister is quiet and unassuming, even in the role of her sister. The scene where the 'transition' takes place is good and eerie. It left me with a very uneasy feeling, such as "How could a sister actually DO that?" Bette was worked hard with this dual role, you can tell, but as the classic STAR that she is, pulls it off like its nothing. Classic Bette...a really good film and shouldn't be overlooked, Bette fan or not.

One of a kind
20 March 2006
"Tender Comrade" was the only film made during the second world war showing what it was like to be a war bride. It just about covers every detail of home life during this time period, such as rationing booklets, war plant jobs, friendships, worries, "not to talk about troop movements" in public and everything a war bride had to deal with. I'm sure one cam complain about dialog, scripts, camera angles, etcetera, but life wasn't perfect and this film recreates life during a time when "politically incorrect" was not mandatory. People actually talked like that then. They dressed like that, lived like that. This film is as close to factual representation of a war bride as anyone ever got and I, for one, am thankful it was filmed and still lives on. Everyone seems to remember the soldier, but not so much about what their wives, mothers, sisters and daughters had to endure while being left behind to wait for their return. Thank you, Mr. Dymytryk.

Good old fashioned creeps
20 March 2006
I agree that some of the lines in this film are 'cheesy', but its been a long time since I've seen a film that actually gave me a good case of the creeps and this filled the bill. I'm sick of the blood, gore, sex and foul language. SOmetimes its okay, but gets painfully boring after awhile. I want to be able to be spooked or creeped out; to be able to walk away looking over my shoulder or wondering "what if" and this film was the last film ever made that gave me this feeling. Not many films do, because it seems blood and filth is what horror is supposed to be about. Well I like good old spooky stories, too and this film has what it takes to give you a good case of the creeps. If you like blood, gore and sex, then you probably wont like this film. But if you want to spend the next two weeks walking on the paranoid side, check it out!

First East Side Kids serial entry
17 June 2004
A lot of folks don't have much great to say about this or any of the East Side Kids films, but this was the first entry into the series and it wasn't as bad as its touted to be. Plenty of action and intrigue, though quite dated. No Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall or even Bobby Jordan...this was the adjustment period for those coming fresh from being the Dead End Kids and cast wasn't settled. Though you do have a familiar face...Frankie Burke, from "Angels with dirty faces" and other Dead End Kids films. He mugs it up heavily for this film and has some decent lines, which he didn't often receive. This is a film definitely worth watching! If for nothing else, simply for the mere fact that this is the first entry into the East Side Kids serial. If you are a fan of the Dead End Kids, this is a must see.

Funny, creepy & worth your time!
18 October 2003
The cigar scene at the country estate is worth it all! Full of belly laughs! Ernie "Sunshine Sammy" Morrison is at his classic comedic best. Frankie Burke, the young Cagney look-alike from "Angels with dirty faces" has a role as one of the boys and does a fine job...you'll notice he can move like cagney, as well as look, act and sound like him when you see him jumping over that sofa in the guest room! Many sight-gags and tongue-in-cheek humor in this film. The shame is its lack-luster title and description. This is one you have to see. One warning, however...there are racial overtones. But you must remember, this *was* 1940 and Mr. Morrison handles them with his precise, exceptional talent. All in all, this is a must-see film for classic buffs. For anyone looking for clean fun!

A Screaming Riot!!
3 September 2003
I never laughed so hard in my life! The language is quite raw, so those with sensitive ears should find an edited-for-tv version, and if you're looking for academy-award-winning material, pass this one up...but if you're just looking to have fun and laugh yourself stupid, this video is a must-see! My sides ached for three days after watching this movie. Johnny Brennan nad Kamal Ahmed are two of the funniest comedians that have ever rolled into public view. These are just two guys having fun and taking you with them, as if you had an extremely hilarious brother and his equally funny best friend. And EVERYbody has had a Brent Weir in their life at one point...and its a scream how they torment him throughout the film! If you're not anal about perfection but just like to let your hair down and have fun without judgement, grab this one up. You really wont regret it!!

Better than first!
26 November 2002
I have seen both "Best of the Best" films and love them both and I dont usually like this type film. Eric Roberts is very "toned down" for this film, a loyal, loving father/widower still suffering from the loss of his wife. He's outstanding in this particular role. Phillip Rhee is a toned down Jackie Chan, but very suave, very sexy, very powerful. I didnt like it at all what happened to Christoper Penn's character, especially so early in the film, but it did work for the overall plot. I loved the desert scenes and my favorites were the scene's with hunky actor Sonny Landham, another actor, like Rhee, who hasnt really got the screen time they deserve. This is a film that is a must see, because there are so many reasons to see it. Its got great action/fight scenes for the guys and lots of gorgeous guys for the gals! This is DEFINATELY NOT your typical "karate" flick, by ANY means! Phillip Rhee, you ROCK!!! And I'm waiting patiently for the next "Best of the Best" installment!! DONT MISS THIS FILM, PEOPLE!! If you havent seen it yet, you're missing an AWESOME film!

Ignore the negativity of the MST3K drones!
26 November 2002
If you want to watch a really fun film, rent this video. My daughter adored this film when she was small. It gave her something good to cheer for, if not for the unrealistic creature, but the *idea* of something helpless in an unknown world. This movie isnt for the anal retentive who simply cannot find ANYTHING pleasurable about life. Nor is it for those armchair film critics who dissect every film and analyse every part. This is stict entertainment. Strict enjoyment. If you can let your hair down long enough to enjoy something without analyzing it for realism, then you've got your money's worth. Dont pay attention to those MST3K fans. Anyone who could actually enjoy constant insults and laugh at anything they deem inferior to their own over-inflated ego's are not capable of making honest opinions, anyway. This film is strictly for those who can enjoy life with a light hearted attitude, who have true compassion and can find pleasure where they look. Enjoy it. Life's too short not to. I give it 8 stars.

Sweetness at its best
26 November 2002
People put too much emphasis on the fact that Spielberg had something to do with this film. So what? I congratulate him for it! He's a gifted man that I sincerely appreciate! He knows a good thing when he see's it (or does it). This film is as sweet as they come. My favorite part of the entire project was the message that Capitolism CAN be overcome if you really believe you can do it. It was all about "answered prayers"...all the tennent's said that they had prayed for a miracle. So it was an unothodox miracle? Isnt film supposed to be about fantasy? Youre kids are going to love this, if they still too small to have had their minds burned out on video games, yet. The adults will love the messages sent out by this obscure little venture. All in all, its not a waste of film OR time -- you are bound to find something about it to love.

How can anyone NOT love this true jewel?!
26 November 2002
It has everything! Action, romance (well, between two cartoon cats!)and adventure, in a family viewable arena! The children will adore this classic, I can practically gaurentee that! And the adults will laugh and cry along with it, cheering on the little Robespierre with his small body and lion's heart. Jon-Tom's tail and whiskers twitching as "The best mouse catcher in all of Paris!" spots a rodent hundreds of feet away (but never actually kills one). The pretty Mewsette who wants more than she can handle and ends up getting into trouble for it. Madame Rubinschottz, the large, pink cat of ill repute with the long eyelashes and big, red lips who sends out the despicable Meowrice, the scoundrel who is to bring a lovely kitty (Mewsette) into her fold. And lest we forget the "Money-Cats" (the scraggly, silly, bumbling black alley cats who shake their cat-behinds on the rooftops to the tune of "The money-cat knows where the money-tree grows"!). This cartoon feature is like those famous potato chips that claim you cant eat just one. Once you see this film, you will *always* want to go back!

If youre looking for the 50s, this is it!
26 November 2002
This is my all time favorite 50s drive-in flick! If youre researching the 1950s, then this is the film you want to see! Even during the dance party, there are two "guest monsters" from other 50s drive-in films...see if you can spot them! My favorite part of this film is the girl drag racer/mechanic! In the days when women working on their own cars or racing their own cars was a HUGE no-no, this gal gets to do it all...a true pioneer! The music, the cars, the costumes, the clothes and even the pajama party certainly adds fun and flavor to this funny, spooky classic! But, if you dont watch this film for any other reason, you have GOT to watch it for that smart-alecky talking *bird*!! He'll have you rolling with laughter!

This film isnt for todays kids!
26 November 2002
This film is awesome for those of my generation, before the only thing that could scare a person is blatant gore. Back in the days when something simply "spooky" or "creepy" could actually scare you, this was one of the best. If you can only judge films by todays standards, then dont watch this film. It will bore you because you actually have to *think* when watching it. Its not the very early special effects that youre watching for, anyway...its the idea of a man who tries to drive his wife insane and then gets the tables turned on him. The message of this film is "What goes around, comes around". It leaves you wondering. It makes you look over your shoulder. And, once you hear the sound of those wailing peacocks, you'll never get them out of your mind! But you do have to be a baby-boomer to appreciate it. Anyone under 30, who grew up with Jason Voorhees, Freddie Kreuger or Michael Myers, are not going to have the ability to appreciate this film for what its worth. Also, anyone who is a fan of the 60s TV show, "Dragnet", will want to watch this film, since it stars two of "Dragnet's" most reoccuring character actors, Peggy Webber and John Hudson in their pre-Dragnet days.

I'm so tired of blase remakes...
26 October 2001
"13 Ghosts" happened to be one of my all-time favorite films. Though a bit on the "campy" side, it was still fun and a wonderful childhood memory. Hollywood is so lax in talent these days, that they have reduced themselves to taking my favorite old films and remake them into special effects porn films. Its an insult and an outrage. I didnt expect much when I saw this film, either. And I wasnt let down. I got just what I expected. Crap. They take my old faves, rip them apart, change them around and filthy them up, then present them to the new generation. Its sad that Hollywood is so pathetic today that it has to drag old films out of the vault to remake them because they just cant find anyone with any original ideas. What are they going to do when they've remade everything? Finish making films based on old 60s tv shows like they started? Then what, movies based on old 70s shows? How pathetic. People, if you go see this film, please make sure to see the original 13 Ghosts, first, so you can compare the two? I dont even believe why they took the whole family out of the remake...first, it was a father, a mother, a daughter and a son...theyve cut out the mother and son. Why?? What was the purpose of THAT?

But I should have known. Remakes *ALWAYS* suck...I just wasted ten bucks for *nothing*.
