Trigger Point (2022)
Great show
I dont understand all the negative reviews. This show is great stuff. Very good acting and cinematography. The story progresses nicely without getting boring or repetitive. I dont know what else to say really, I enjoyed it. If you liked shows like "line of duty" or other Uk crime shows this is similar. I saw some people criticise the stories, I disagree. The stories are interesting and have twists and turns I did not anticipate. I could go on about why I enjoyed it but I recommend watching it. You will know if you like it or not after 1 episode. I hope they do more, its an interesting topic to do a show on. I never knew there was so many bomb threats in the UK.
1408 (2007)
I love it
While some horror aspects are a bit cheesey, I have grown to like this film more and more. I could watch multiple films about the adventures of "Mike Enslin". The film making is also very good, the music and the cinematography really draw you into the unknown. It has a great sense of mystery. Which is why I prefer the first half better than 2nd half of the film. The psychological aspects of the story are quite original, but when these things manifest as real monsters it kinda has the vibe of that 80s horror movie "house". Its not bad, but its a shift in tone from the first half. It would of been a better film if they soley progressed the psychological aspects of the story and left out the cheesy monsters/ghosts/whatever they are.
Debbie Does Demons (2023)
It's like a porn movie but without the sex.
Infact brazzers has better camera work and acting. Everything about this film is not good. The iPhone offers better image stabilization then whatever they used here. The acting was completely amateur, you can always tell because good actors don't act. Plus the story was boring and terribly paced, edited by someone who can't be very experienced. I guess the one good point is that it's quite creative with everything being so wacky and weird.
The annoying thing about this film is the last of effort, with the technology and resources we have today anyone can make a film that at least looks good as long as they put in the effort, in this film they clearly didn't.
The Creator (2023)
Enjoyable, but could of been better.
The story while enjoyable is rather typical Hollywood fair. A simple plot the enables lots of explosions. The good thing is that while the plot is simple it is a good one. However A.i is such a deep and complex subject the story does not do it justice. With people now being more educated about Ai today, films about it can't get away with unrealistic details or a lack of them. For example humanoid police robots or robots fighting for there freedom would not be limited to human speed and reaction times like they are in this film. This would of been OK 10 or 20yrs ago when the audience didn't know these things but now the audience does know about how superior advanced ai is.
Things I do like about this film is the excellent visuals and world design, I can imagine the world to be like this in 2065.
The robots, environments and buildings all look great, as do the visual fx.
The acting is also very good. It's just a shame the story was not more ambitious.
This film reminds me of the 2013 matt damon film "elysium"
Assassin (2015)
so funny, not bad plot 😆
The creators of this film were going for the cold but calculated assassin, but what they ended up was Danny dyer acting timid, simple and boring, which while is not what the creators intended it is still quite funny. So it is one of those "its so bad its good situations" regarding the main character's acting, however the story is quite good. For this to work like Jason stahams "mechanic", Danny Dyer would need to do similar things, like get in shape and train with firearms. If Dyer looked the part physically and performed with firearms professionaly it would bring a focus and energy which does not make him seem like a quiet simpleton.
Beau Is Afraid (2023)
An eccentric wild journey.
I really enjoyed this, while the story is open to interpretation, the basic scenarios are done very well, you really feel like you're there in this surreal tale. It has many complex issues it tackles and the overall story is certainly not a common one. Reminds me of the film "big fish" but more grounded.
Excellent performances and great camera work and editing.
Joaquin phoenix is excellent, reminds me of a less stable version of the character he played in "her".
The other actors don't get that much screen time, this movie is very much about Beau but they all do a great job. It's long and there's only a few times when I thought it started to drag, so overall it's very good and I recommend you watch it.
Robot & Frank (2012)
Great
I love this film. A less frequent reason is because of how realistic it dipicts how robots will function in the close future. We are not that far away, with A.i like ChatGPT4, self driving software from Tesla and robots like atlas from Boston dynamics it's iteration and iteration of these technologies which will bring us a robot as caperble as the one in this movie.
The main story is also very good, bringing a family drama that people not into robots of technology will enjoys. All performances are on point. Each character was cast well. Hopefully we get more movies like this possibly a sequel or prequel.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Best in class visuals, average story.
Watching this in 3D reminded me just how incredible 3d can be when done well, it truly is the best visual spectacle on film. For me the main plot was not that interesting. The vendetta between cloned Quarich and Jake Sully seemed to be a small part of a very complex world, I was expecting a story with more depth and intelligence. Revenge plots can be great, kill bill, sin city etc, but the world of pandora deserves more. While the original Avatar did not have the best story, the outcast becomes leader story of A1, is more interesting then a rather simple revenge plot. I'm glad they give a reason why the humans returned, earth is dying and they need to get rid of the Navi resistance lead by Jake Sully. The thing is, it could of been more interesting, limiting the movie to the Quarich clone hunting Jake was too simplistic, it could of been part of the main plot but it needed other characters and methods pushing earth's agenda. The movie does introduce a lot of knew characters, species and characteristics of pandora, but they don't push the main plot and don't really enhance this movie.
So pleased the humans motives were addressed but it's to bad the main story could of been something better. I still recommend a watch, the visuals are incredible and a lot of things do get an acceptable answer.
Marcus Wareing's Tales from a Kitchen Garden (2022)
Very interesting insight into growing and rearing produce.
Love the idea of growing your own veg. Michelin star Chef Marcus dives Into the world of growing veg and rearing farm animals. He also cooks with the produce with creative recipes. Its nothing really original but if you're a fan of food, Marcus and growing your own food you should enjoy it. My only criticism is that the BBC format kind of takes away a bit from what it's really like. I think it would also suit a YouTube style format where you see more of the process. I suppose there is not much else to really say, if it sounds interesting to you give it a watch. I hope Marcus's next TV show is him travelling to a place where he is a novice of the cusine like India or Thailand. They are some of my favourite cusines but I know about as much as the next Englishman about them.
Triangle of Sadness (2022)
Even parody films need to make some sense
I get that this film is a dark comedy, mocking the extremely wealthy but that does not give the film an excuse to make very little sense. Decent satire films still make some sense and have some logic behind them. When the initial premise of the film makes no sense, it's just bad writing. I'm not asking for the film to be something different just at least have it make sense. A luxury yacht would not have an alcoholic captain and even if it did the bosen or 2nd in command would take command. The yacht would not even go in crazy rough waters and they would not have a 7course meal during.
They should of at least used plausible reasons for the events of the film, like and electrical fault, the guest eat some bad shrimp and all puke etc etc not reasons that don't make sense.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
A well paced crazy Doctor strange rollercoaster, with some slightly diversive character directions
The pacing was excellent, it dives straight back into the world of Dr. Strange in a intriguing and sensible way. The action is top notch and never over stays its welcome because its varried with many different locations and enemies. While some do disagree the path Wanda (scarlett witch) takes, if you go back to wondervision, it does make sense, while im sure people wanted wanda to go in a more positive direction, I personally like some tragedy in the MCU, happy endings all the time would be a bit boring and her fait is not necessary negative.
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
Not terrible but could be so much better
The plot is not to bad, but I refuse to believe that Picard would be such a shadow of his old self, I understand his body would age but his fighting spirit should of still been there.
