The Rise of Blue Beetle
18 August 2023
This is a great way to start off Blue Beetle (2023)! The first impression is that it had good jokes that I laughed along with. The whole movie revolves around a comedy-action movie so there was plenty of jokes to go around with. The acting was great with everyone especially Jamie Reyes/Blue Beetle (Xolo Mariduena) making him a likable protagonist. George Lopez playing as Uncle Rudy was my favorite character because he was basically the comedian of the movie. It was glad to see him back on the big screen. The cinematography with the special effects and CGI was good of Blue Beetle himself and there was a lot of blue and purple color schemes going on. It was fresh to see an old DC character getting his own movie. Director Angel Manuel Soto does a great job of portraying Blue Beetle's origin story off to the world. Overall, Blue Beetle is great with its acting, jokes, and action. I would recommend watching it in theaters because I am going for a second viewing!

Unpowerful Evil is Aboard
17 August 2023
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023) is about a crew of sailors set in the late 1800's. They are headed off to England to visit and drop off Cargo there. Later, they realize that all the cargo they have onboard is not what it seems. There is a powerful evil in the form of Dracula in one of those boxes and escapes. He terrorizes the ship and the crew must survive until they step afoot until England. They must do whatever it takes to kill Dracula and survive the Demeter.

Overall, it was a fun watch of Dracula killing the crewmen one by one. Each kill was so bloody good that I had to count along and keep track of the kill count. The acting was great by everyone to make it feel that it was set in the late 1800's. Clemens (Corey Hawkins) plays the main protagonist role pretty well in this type of movie. The cinematography and special effects is good that it has a Pirates of the Caribbean feel to it, but with horror elements and a roaming Dracula afoot. Director Andre Ovredal does a good job portraying this movie in the Universal Monsters category. The Last Voyage of the Demeter is good with its kills, acting, and cinematography. I would recommend watching it in theaters for a good horror watch!

Solid Video Game Adaptation
10 August 2023
Gran Turismo (2023) is a about a young adult named Jann Mardenboro (Archie Madewe) playing the video game and hopes he can achieve his dreams to become a professional race car driver. He has an opportunity to show it by being accepted by the Nissan GT invitational to see who will become one. He keeps training until his hard work pays off by fully accomplishing his dream.

Overall, I thought it was a good movie based on a true story! Madewe plays Mardenboro in a good underdog role who never backs down and earns respect by doing the work. Hearing that it came from a young adult's true story made me like the movie even more.

The acting was great by everyone especially as David Harbour playing the hard-hitting coach Jack Salter in a well-received role. The action from cars racing and crashes was fun to watch. The movie as a whole reminded me of Ford Vs. Ferrari (2019) because of the story, races, and the locations on where they drove. Director Neil Blomkamp does a good job of portraying life isn't more than a just video game, but as a career as well. Overall, Gran Turismo is good with its story, acting, and action. I would recommend watching it in theaters for a good action-adventure watch!

Just Bad
8 August 2023
The first impression of The Meg 2: The Trench (2023) is that this was hard to watch. There were dumbfounded scenes that did not make any sense led by decision making. The kills were not that good especially since it is a PG-13 movie. The only parts that I liked are Jason Statham and his great acting and the antagonists getting killed off. Other than that, I was ready to leave the theater. It really questioned me on how does the protagonists keep on surviving after questionable events. I honestly liked the first one better because it was not that bad of a shark movie. The sequel, however, just made it worse. I am surprised that this film was allowed to make it in Dolby Cinema since it only allows good or great movies in the auditorium. Overall, The Meg 2: The Trench is pretty bad with its scenes and kills. I would recommend to stay away from this movie.

Good Gripping Horror
31 July 2023
Talk to Me (2023) is about a young girl named Mia hanging out with her friends. They all have fun in a room with themselves upon a special hand that they have interactions with. Once you have interactions with the hand, you have a demonic soul possessing you and you can see demonic souls yourself. Until then, Mia can see demonic souls along the way while she is living her everyday lifestyle. She must put a halt to the demonic souls before they fully control her.

Overall, I thought it was a good horror film! This was a great dictorial debut with Danny and Michael Philippou, also known as popular YouTubers RackaRacka. Danny and Michael did a great job on building characters and the suspense up for them. I had so much interest into this film that it had great buildup from the beginning to the end. Speaking of the end of the film, I was shocked to see the film end the way that it did. Overall, Talk to Me is good with its acting, suspense, and horror. I would recommend watching it in theaters for a good horror watch.

An Alright Remake
28 July 2023
The first impression of The Haunted Mansion (2023) is that it had good jokes that I could not resist to laugh to. Some of the other jokes that I found were pretty corny to listen. The story was mildly entertaining because most of the movie was pretty good dialogue between the protagonists and the ghosts of the mansion. A con that I found with it is that the dialogue can be boring at times to where I yawned sometimes. The cinematography is visually appealing to say the least with the old costumes of the ghosts that they wore in the movie. I also liked the special effects of the ghosts themselves to make them supernatural and creepy. The acting is good with LaKeith Stanfield plays a good preformance as Ben Mattias as the main protagonist. Overall, The Haunted Mansion (2023) is alright with its story, thrills, and jokes. I would recommend watching it on streaming services or watch it in theaters if you want to.

What Bumps in the Wall...
25 July 2023
The first impression of Cobweb (2023) is that it has good storyline buildup from the beginning to the end of the film. Director Samuel Bodin does a great job of every detail from the movie that I do not want to spoil that has important foreshadowing. The acting by everyone is great that it is truly a creepy film to watch. However, the ending felt alright though because not much from the movie itself got resolved and we got left on a cliffhanger ending. When I went to see the trailer that it was from the same producer who made Barbarian (2022). Cobweb does give off a Barbarian feel to the movie once you do see it. Overall, Cobweb is good with its acting, story, and the horror. I would recommend watching Cobweb in theaters.

Solid Directors Debut
8 July 2023
The first impression of Insidious: The Red Door (2023) gave me some good jump scares. Not all jump scares scared me though because some were predictable especially if you have seen the trailers. The suspense was really good because I had chills watching some parts of what was going to happen next. Director Patrick Wilson does a good job of building character development with him as Josh and his son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) from beginning to the end of the movie. The acting by everyone is good that they preformed well to make it dramatic and scary. The cinematography is visually creepy from seeing the horrifying monsters, blood, smoke, and the props in the red room as well. One con that I have in the movie is that the kids aged, but the parents look like they did not because the movie is supposed be set in the future. Although, I still liked it for what it is with that being a good horror movie. Insidious: The Red Door is good with its acting, story, and the horror. I would recommend watching it in theaters for a good horror watch.

Good Underwater Family Film
2 July 2023
Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken (2023) is about a teenager named Ruby living as a human on dry land. She makes friends and fits in society pretty well. Until then that she goes underwater and finds out that she is a kraken as well with her kraken family. Her kraken mission is to stop mermaids from ruling the world. It is her goal to survive life as a teenage kraken and stop mermaids once and for all.

Overall, I thought Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken is a good family-friendly film! It has a good story of a teenager finding out what she is truly capable of because she is a hidden kraken. The cinematography is great with its animation and art style from Dreamworks. The voice acting is good that I did not know the mom was Toni Collette such as from Hereditary that she plays the mom Agatha in a good performance. Never would I have ever thought I would be seeing a kids movie in a long while, but the trailers got to me. The movie also has a hidden theme of growing up as a teenager as well. Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken is good with its animation, voice acting, and the story. I would recommend watching it in theaters for a good family-friendly watch!

Good Transformers Sequel
26 June 2023
The first impression of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is that it is entertaining to say the least. From the CGI of the transformers, action and explosions, and the good acting made it a good watch. Director Michael Bay is at it with his movies making sure they are filled with explosions. There is only so much you can do with explosions in movies especially CGI ones that can make it good. I felt that too many explosions can hold a movie back because it can be overloaded by them. However, the dialogue was captivating, but not groundbreaking as we learned more about the main protagonists Noah (Anthony Ramos) and Elena (Dominique Fishback) exchanging words with the autobots and maximals. It was fresh to see the Maximals in action as they are primal jungle autobots. My personal favorite maximal is Optiumus Primal because he is the brave leader of the maximals and he is a gorilla. Plus, I liked the 90's throwback music as well. Overall, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is good with its action, acting, and entertainment. I would recommend it to watch it in theaters for a single viewing.

Good Comedy-Horror
19 June 2023
The Blackening is about a group of black friends camping out in a cabin in the woods. They all have fun in the cabin until they endure a dreadful night. They stumble across a board game called The Blackening. If they do not play it, they are being chased to death. They have to get all the questions right in order to survive. Either play The Blackening or die trying.

The first impression of the movie is that it had some good jokes that I could not resist to laugh. Although, there were some jokes that I did not really get because I did not understand all the references. It has a good story of a racist board game being run by a serial killer trying to kill all black people with stereotypes. A con for me is that the movie drags a bit. However, I still liked the movie because of its story and the characters. The Blackening is good with its acting, comedy, and the story. I would recommend to watch it in theaters for a good comedy-horror watch.

Bolting through Madness
17 June 2023
I just got out of The Flash (2023) in IMAX and it was great! The first impression of The Flash is that it has some good jokes that I could not resist to laugh. The comedy was good that made it a action-packed, but also a funny DC film. The cinematography and acting was great to seeing The Flash with two Barry Allen's (Ezra Miller), Super-Girl (Sasha Calle), and two Batmans (Ben Afleck/ Michael Keaton) all in action against fighting crime and General Zod (Micheal Shannon) with his army. Kudos to Michael Keaton still playing the role with his great acting in this new addition. I am glad to see what more of The Flash can do in his own movie of what he can do with his powers. Also, this made me more emotional because it involves Allen Barry's family. Director Andres Muschietti made sure that this superhero entry is going to be a memorable one with surprising cameos. It is simply a great addition to the DCU with its cinematography, action, acting, and comedy. I would recommend watching The Flash in theaters because I am going for a second viewing!

5 Years Was Worth the Wait!
5 June 2023
The first impression of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is that the cinematography is visually stunning. The artwork and animations of the characters and backgrounds are pleasing to watch. Kudos to the artist team who put the hard work in. I loved how we saw almost and if not every Spider-Person from all the universes. My personal favorite was Spider-Punk being played by Daniel Kaluuya because he is a punk-rock character, but also still chill and nonchalant at the same time. It was glad seeing Miles Morales (Shamiek Moore) back in action as his and also Spider-Gwen's (Hailee Steinfield) stories dissolve all into one movie. It was nice to see that we have strong antagonists being played by Spot (Jason Schwartzman) and Spider-Man 2099/ Miguel O' Hara (Oscar Isaac). Overall, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is great with its voice acting, cinematography, and the story. I would recommend watching it in theaters because I am going for a second viewing!

The Boogeyman (I) (2023)

The Darkness is its Own Fear Itself
1 June 2023
The Boogeyman (2023) is about a family of a male therapist who has to raise his two daughters by himself. He meetups with clients in his house until one day that this mysterious client appears. The mysterious client commits suicide inside their house while leaving a dark entity in the house with the family. The family of three start to endure the pain of the entity that brings to the family. It is up to them to stop the mysterious entity once and for all.

I went to see an early access screening of The Boogeyman (2023) in a select theater, and I thought it was good. The first impression of the movie that it does deliver a slow burn, but it still delivers. The suspense and buildup of the movie itself and the character's dialogue of Sadie (Sophie Thatcher), Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair), and Will Harper (Chris Messina) are all important to the end. It was great to see the 1973 short story being adapted to the big screen as Stephen King's mind portrays fantasizing monsters come to life. The monster reveal was creepy and entertaining to watch at the same time. King does deliver a hidden theme of when we are all scared of the dark as well. The Boogeyman writers are the same minds who made A Quiet Place (2018) and director Rob Savage that made the movie horrific to say the least. Overall, The Boogeyman is good with its acting, suspense, and horror. I would recommend watching it in theaters for a good horror-thriller watch.

The Little Mermaid (I) (2023)

Feeling Mixed, but still Good
30 May 2023
The first impression of The Little Mermaid gave me that it is overly used in CGI. We have all CGI underwater creatures dancing and the mermaids with their fins was too over saturated with it. Plus, I prefer the 1989 original better because of its great voice acting and classic performances. However, Halle Bailey does a great job acting as Ariel especially in her singing. Her singing alone is what brought the movie to life. I also liked the singing performances of Eric (Jonah Hauer-King), Sebastian (Daveed Diggs), and Scuttle (Awkwafina). The cinematography was good as well as it brings a Pirates of the Caribbean look to the movie. From the ships, ocean, and the loot in the movie was all nice to see. Overall, The Little Mermaid is good with its acting, singing, and performances. I would recommend The Little Mermaid in theaters for a feel-good Disney remake watch.

Fast X (2023)

Family Will Always Be There
20 May 2023
The first impression of Fast X is that it is very entertaining to say the least. The cinematography to cars driving insanely fast to almost every part on the world and cars blowing up is visually pleasing. The acting and choreography by everyone is entertaining especially Jason Momoa. Jason Momoa delivers the antagonist role very well that he is a memorable character in the Fast franchise. A con that I have with the movie is that half the action scenes are unbelievable. It defies reality that it is stupidly insane and cheesy at the same time. Director Louis Leterrier made sure that Fast X was going to be a memorable entry in the franchise with surprising cameos. I cannot wait for Fast 11 on the way. Overall, Fast X is good with its acting, story, and entertainment. I would recommend it to watch it in theaters for a good action watch.

Hidden Horrors
16 May 2023
The Hole in the Ground is about a mother named Sarah (Seana Kerslake) who moves to a foreign part of the the country in a small town and with her young son, Chris (James Quinn Markey). Once they settle into the house, they stumble across a forest that is located in the backyard of the house. In the forest, there is a giant hole in the ground that covers hidden secrets and horrors underground. One day, Chris goes missing and comes back to the house with disturbing and suspicious actions along with him. Sarah must unravel the secrets within his son and the hole in the ground as well.

The first impression of the movie is that it is pretty slow. There was suspicious activity of Chris in the middle of the movie, but not groundbreaking until the end of the movie. Director Lee Cronin does a good job of the storytelling that makes the viewer show eagerness of what is inside Chris and what is in the hole in the ground. The acting seemed pretty average and is is not that horrific until the end of the film. Overall, the Hole in the Ground is above average with its acting, story, and the horror. I would recommend to watch it on streaming services or rent it.

Pretty Mixed
12 May 2023
The Final Wish is about a young failed lawyer named Aaron (Micheal Welch) who is out of town that he visits his family over their deceased father. Once they mourn their father's death, Aaron stumbles upon an old antique that his father used to have. The old antique is an urn that can grant you wishes. Aaron decides to make a few wishes with the urn, but he pays a price with every wish. Once he has completed all of his wishes, something devastating happens to Aaron that he will once soon regret.

My first impression is that the movie is filled with cheap jumpscares that I just did not have a reaction to it. There were a few dumb storyline situations that had me dumbfounded. Also, the kills were okay and nothing too special happened. Although, the acting of the cast seemed pretty average so it was mildly entertaining. The story seemed pretty alright since the movie is from the same creator who made Final Destination, Timothy Woodward Jr. Overall, The Final Wish is okay with its acting, kills, and the story. I would recommend to watch it on streaming services or pass on it.

End of a Trilogy
8 May 2023
The first impressions of Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 gave me more emotions considering it is the last of the trilogy. It gave me laughter because the jokes were funnier compared to other Marvel movies. It gave me more sadness because there were parts where I thought a certain character that dies. This is also Rocket Raccoon's origin story because it will go more of in depth of how he will learn how to talk and learn more from Rocket's creators. James Gunn did a great job on ending GOTG considering he will move onto DC. The acting by everyone was amazing that makes the viewer feels all type of emotions from laughter to sadness. The cinematography is visually stunning, from the CGI and special effects, that makes you feel that you were in another universe. Lastly, the action was great from the Guardians that made the viewer want more fights. Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 is great with its acting, cinematography, action, and the story. I would recommend to watch it in theaters because I am going for a second viewing!

Sisu (2022)

Finnish John Wick
29 April 2023
Sisu is about a gold miner who finds the richest of golds in an underground pit. He must trade the gold for cash to a bank. Although, he lives thousands of miles away from a bank and must travel on foot. On the way there, he encounters German Nazis along the way who want to steal it from him. He must fight throughout all of them in order to deposit his gold.

The first impressions of Sisu gave me that it was a bloody, fun, and good time of a gold miner killing Nazis. Since John Wick was heavily inspired by director, Jalmari Helander, that this movie is basically the German 1940's war version of John Wick. Jorma Tommila's (main protagonist) acting skills were badass from his creative surviving skills to kill the Nazis. The deaths were entertaining with the special effects and CGI of them. Overall, Sisu is good with its acting, kills, and story. I would recommend Sisu in theaters for a good action watch.

Good Psychological Thriller
22 April 2023
Nefarious is about a Psychiatrist named Dr. James Martin (Jordan Belfi) taking a case of a serial killer named Edward (Sean Patrick Flannery) in prison. His job is to know whether if he is mentally stable or not for execution. Edward claims that he has a demon inside of him named Nefarious. Nefarious has already put Edward out of his misery by committing murders. His next step is commit an act of evil to James. James will have to interrogate and endure Edward/ Nefarious of his evil ways to see if he is mentally stable for execution.

Overall, it is a good film with its acting, premise, and the story. My first impressions were that this is more of a Psychological Thriller than it is a Horror. The acting is convincing by Sean Patrick Flannery to deceive James of his evil doing. The premise of this movie is whether to believe demons are real. After watching this movie, I am convinced that they are because of the storytelling. I would recommend Nefarious for a good thriller watch.

Entirely Soaked Blood Bath
22 April 2023
Evil Dead Rise is a new reboot from the Evil Dead Franchise. Evil Dead Rise has to do with the returning book and unleashing hell in a high-story apartment. A family of five must endure the nightmares of the book and the comeback of the deadites. They must survive the horrors of whatever goes through them filled with gore, blood, and monsters that come afoot.

Overall, it is great with its acting, kills, gore, and the story. My first impressions that it is a fun horror movie filled with multiple kills and blood throughout. It was great to see the deadites return in more forms than one. The acting is great as well as from everyone from the family were terrified and wanted to get the hell out of the apartment. There were so many kills that it was hard to keep track of them. Lastly, shoutouts to the production crew for using tons of gallons of blood in this movie. I recommend Evil Dead Rise in theaters because I am going for a second viewing!

Enticing Horror Film
15 April 2023
The Pope's Exorcist is about Father Gabriel Amorth (Russell Crowe) doing excorism as his job. Until one day, he reaches a case that is the most difficult exorcism from a family who just moved into a house in Spain. A powerful demon takes control of a boy and unleashes hell on his family that Father Amorth can only solve. He must save the boy from the demon or they will lose their souls forever.

Overall, I thought the entertainment value, story, and acting is good. Russell Crowe does a great job as acting in his role in a priest performing exorcisms. Shoutouts to the production crew that made the film more dark and demonic. It is based on a true story that gives more of a background to the story than it relies on less jumpscares. I became invested into Father Amorth's and the other Priest protagonist stories. I would recommend The Pope's Exorcist in theaters for a good horror watch.

Renfield (2023)

Cartoony and Funny Blood Bath
15 April 2023
Renfield is about Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) living off of Count Dracula (Nicolas Cage). He serves him to anything of his needs in return of immortal health and full power. Until he realizes the cons of only being a servant, Renfield must attend to his needs first and begins to become human again. Once that happens, Dracula will do anything out of his way to make sure that Renfield's life will be a living hell if he is not his servant anymore. Renfield does not want to do it and will do anything to stop it once and for all.

Overall, I liked the kills, story, and acting of Renfield! Never would I have thought that Nicolas Cage can pull off a Dracula role in such a film. The same applies to Nicolas Hoult as well as his English vampire servant. The kills were so violently bloody and cartoonish to watch that made it fun. Lastly, the film had a few jokes that I could not resist to laugh as well. I would recommend Renfield in theaters for a good comedy-horror watch.

Let's a Go!!!
9 April 2023
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is about how Mario and Luigi stumble across Mushroom Kingdom. In Mushroom Kingdom, they meet Princess Peach and Toad to join forces to stop Bowser from destroying the Kingdom and marrying Peach. They even have help from Donkey Kong and his Kong Kingdom to stop Bowser and his kingdom once and for all. It is the most animated cinematic Mario movie that you can watch that were created from the video games.

Overall, I thought it was great from its voice acting, entertainment, Easter eggs, and the story. Never would I have thought that Chris Pratt would have voiced Mario in a great job. The rest of the cast members such as Anna Taylor Joy as Peach and Jack Black as Bowser did great jobs as well. The animation and visual art style made it so vibrantly enjoyable. They were so many Easter eggs referenced from other Nintendo and Mario games that you have to see it for yourself. I would recommend The Super Mario Bros. Movie in theaters because I am going to watch it for a second viewing!
