Reign of Fire (2002)
Is that Dave Hedgehog?
If anyone out there watches either Bottom or the Young Ones, you may get Quinn (Christian Bale) confused with Dave Hedgehog in this.
It's a very basic film, following all the traditional Hollywood cliches. It looks good and sounds great, but the acting is wooden, the plot is extremely thin and it's not the sort of film you can provide artistic analysis of.
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
Confusing? Of course...
If you want a fully explained, self-contained film, hire out something with that sort of story. There are many good films that do that. This isn't telling a story - it's examining relationships. Therefore, why does it even need a plot?
Don't look too hard for explanations, as you then fall into the trap of trying to find meaning where there is none. Instead watch the interaction between all the different characters, the beautiful cinematography and just get absorbed by it all. It's not a 'normal' film, and you'll be disappointed if you watch it as one. Instead, repeating someone else's phrase on here, it's a work of art.
The League of Gentlemen (1999)
Weird, sick but very, very funny
I first flicked onto the LoG accidentally one night while waching television: since then, I have never missed an episode.
It's humour is very weird, like a cross between Brass Eye's social commentary, the Fast Show's excellent one-liners, and an amazing plot that seems to develop each week without ever going anywhere. The best example of this was Hillary Briss's special stuff - what was that all about?
The humour will not appeal to all. Some will say it's just too sick, and it's easy to see where they're coming from. Nonetheless, give it a try. If you don't like it, don't watch it, but if you do like it you'll be very glad you took my advice.
All the President's Men (1976)
One of the Best Detective Stories Ever
This film can appeal for a host of different reasons.
On one level, it's a cop story - rookie journalists Woodward and Bernstein out to discover the truth with the system working against them. On another, it's a story of political and historical intrigue. On yet another, it gives an insight into the workings of a massive newspaper.
Working together, these make a very interesting film, giving an insight into one of the most famous political dramas of all time.
