Hijack (2023)

Credibility?
29 June 2023
The setup sounds promising albeit the fact that a plane hijack doesn't count as very original to start with. Every AppleTV+ series and movie I watched so far had very good basic quality in terms of cinematography, acting and directing. I can say I even enjoyed the episode in regards of the setting and the camera work. What also adds to the suspense is the fact that the show runs in real-time. Something that can really help a thriller series just think back to 24. I also love the acting style of Idris Elba ever since his Luther days. But now to the bad part and it's so bad it's unbearable. The script is one horrible mess. It's arbitrary and nonsensical in most parts. It feels like as if they are imposing. It feels as if the story tries to impose unnecessary twists to make the viewer feel he is watching a cat and mouse game. The problem is it's not subtle but but rather forced upon you with a sledgehammer. The persons act and react completely unrealistic to a point where you think they must be mentally handicapped. Save your precious lifetime and skip this one.

Abomination!
11 March 2018
So Emmerich/Devlin spoke about an reboot which got canned due to some struggle between United Artists (MGM) & Warner alright. I love the original Stargate because it was fresh and had a good script. SG-1, Atlantis and Universe really setup a very interesting and lovable franchise. Whoever is responsible for this should go back to square one and start all over. The story, the acting, the props it all feels just awful. The CGI is decent and the producers didn't even feel ashamed to reuse footage from the original. The fighting scenes though it were it all fell apart. Don't waste your precious time on this.

Männersache (2009)
Enjoyable funny flick with a surprisingly good cast
2 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie at a pre-screening, so there might have been a lot of (unfinished) scenes in the movie that won't make it in the final cut. I am usually not a friend of Mario Barth's humor nor do find ordinary German comedies generally entertaining or funny but this movie sticks out from the 0815 crowd of similar films.

Spoiler: The film is about two childhood friends Paul and Hotte played by Mario Barth and Dieter Tappert (better known as Paul Panzer). Paul is working in a zoological department but dreams of becoming the next Jerry Lewis. He isn't very successful at trying as stand-up comedian at least not until he starts making fun of his best friend and the relationship with his girlfriend. Although they are as close to blood brothers as it could possibly get the situation starts to get out of hands. The sudden success seems to get to Paul's head and his new manager friend is making things even worse...

The movies story is as shallow as was to be expected with this kind of movie. The chemistry between the lead actors is good though and Tappert is surprisingly fresh in his role as Hotte. Michael Gwisdek as Paul's father Rudi is doing a fantastic job and is moral apostle of the movie. Anja Kling as Susi (Hotte's girlfriend) is as charming as she is scheming. She is the one, out of jealousy, who tries to tear the friendship apart between Paul and Hotte in the first place in order get have more time with her love. The movie also features a long list of celebrities in smaller, cameo style roles. Some of the movies potential is lost because it works too much with stereotypes and clichés. Some other gags are rather funny and I was truly entertained once the film gained momentum. Mario Barth is playing multiple roles and is doing a really good job (you got to love the character Marek!).

I am looking forward of seeing the final version of the film in 2009!

The Break-Up (2006)
4/10
Story with no beginning and no end ...
3 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
The trailer i saw looked promising. Having seen the movie now I am still confused what the point of the drama flick was. The acting is quite bad and the casting wasn't very clever either. There are the usual Hollywood stereotypes and we have Vince Vaughn & Jennifer Aniston in a supposed to be comedy drama. The introduction of the side kicks is a bit confusing if you ask me and everything seems to be thrown together. By the looks of it the whole relationship between the two lead characters breaks down in one single fight about some typical men / women issues. Since we only saw the couple meet each other at a Chicago Clubs major league game and some vague photo series I don't find the whole love thing very believing. One can't connect to the problems these two have and for some reason we get to see a 0815 drama with no happy ending although the two still seem to be in love with another. So where is the point? If you want to watch a enjoyable break-up go rent The War of the Roses. Don't even bother to watch the alternate ending its even worse than the original cinematic one...

Vertiges: Une Femme Piégée (2001)
Season Unknown, Episode Unknown
6/10
Predictable yet entertaining
9 July 2006
This movie can characterized as a typical french crime thriller. The acting is good for a TV production but the story is very predictable since there are only a few main characters. It becomes quite clear into the movie that the solution to the plot has to involve these few. The drama surrounding the main protagonist, a woman who is married to a lawyer and made the mistake to sleep with a stranger who dies at the beginning of the movie, is believable. Overall the movie is nothing really special but sure a entertaining thriller with fresh and pretty unknown faces. The look and feel of Nizza, where the movie takes place, is present but there are not many recognizable spots where the action is taking place apart from some scene shots.

Chronos (1985)

One of the most aesthetic movies ever
30 January 2005
I was fortunate to see the movie in HD on cable recently. The movie is a bit like Koyaanisqatsi but concentrates more on a aesthetic look and does not transmit a political message. The images are astonishingly beautiful. The use of quick-motion and time lapse is great and give the film a very nice artistic touch. The electronic score composed by Michael Stearns accompanies the corresponding footage very smooth and nicely and adds to the overall atmosphere. If you like movies like Baraka or Koyaanisqatsi this movie is a absolute must-see. The photography and composition of this movie is just mesmerizing and brilliant.
