Fatal Attraction (2023)
Hire a Legal Consultant for Pete's Sake
I wanted to like this show. I enjoyed the first few episodes. But when it got to the "crime" aspect, it was just plain BAD. The way Dan behaves is totally contrary to the way his character was developed and for no reason (he's supposed to be a skilled trial lawyer but IMMEDIATELY starts lying for example). And the courtroom stuff is just laughably bad. The detective didn't Mirandize Dan, yet testified that Dan lied to him. The dad testifies to all sorts of stuff Alex told him but none of that is admissible, it's pure hearsay being offered for its truth. The dad pulling out his phone. FFS. That's a Batson violation. The judge denying Dan's new trial motion because he lied to the detective and is generally a lying liar. (Even if you think that as a judge, you never say it out loud. It's an immediate reversal. Yes ... I'm a judge.). It's just cringey as all get out. So if you have more than a toddler's knowledge of the law or understand logic in general, save yourself the aggravation.
Also the last episode. OMG. So bad. So so bad. (Hadn't watched the last one when I rated it ... docking it 2 stars that that idiocy.)
Nine Perfect Strangers (2021)
A Wonderful Show (ignore the haters)
I really can't comprehend the negative reviews. (I've never even heard of the book, much less read it. So I'm firmly not in the "fans of the book" camp.). And it's about a self-proclaimed wellness guru not a therapist or licensed medical professional ... so I really don't get the folks screaming about licenses and professional standards.
Is it weird? Yes. Intentionally so.
Is Masha (Nicole Kidman) weird/ethereal/off? Yes. Intentionally so.
Among other things, this show is about broken people who are not being helped by "normal" medicine (Tony) or normal therapy (Napoleon/Heather/Zoe and Chantal) and others who have been ground down by societal/cultural norms (Frances, Jessica/Ben, Lars, Tony). Masha too. So they are search for something - anything - that'll help them escape the hell of their day to day. Kasha's "protocols" are unconventional but - ultimately- effective. (And the treatment of suicide is spot on and very affecting.).
It's beautifully written, beautifully acted (Melissa McCarthy, Bobby Canavalle, and Michael Shannon, in particular), and beautifully shot.
