Dark Angel: Pilot (2000)
Season 1, Episode 0
By far the best show in its genre
18 August 2003
This show is so much better than Buffy it's almost embarrassing. After seeing just a few episodes of Dark Angel it's hard not to ask yourself - why on earth has Buffy been allowed to run right to its end, and this show was barely even given a chance to get off the ground? Dark Angel is interesting, exciting, has good morals, great characters - not mention extremely attractive ones which it's certainly hard to deny with this show, for men and women alike; as well as interesting, realistically portrayed relationships. Perhaps the best thing about Dark Angel is that it's also realistic. Of course, I don't mean that we all think there are transgenics running around so it's great to finally see a show about them... this show is believable. Nothing about girls born with superpowers to fight vampires who blatantly don't exist. The first season of Dark Angel is almost flawless (and we can't blame them for anything that went wrong in the second season since they obviously knew the show was going down and tried to do anything to keep it afloat). Dark Angel is worth watching and re-watching. The only bad thing about it is that there'll never be any more of it. This shows deserves more than 10/10: it deserves to continue.

Ticks (1993)
9/10
A hugely underrated comedy/horror movie
18 August 2003
Maybe when most people watch this film they don't understand that you aren't meant to sit there gripping the edge of your seat and shrieking with terror because, frankly, if you think that you're going to be disappointed. 'Ticks' has something that most horror movies have forgotten - we actually want to enjoy watching movies, not just be grossed out by ridiculous amounts of blood and guts. This movie is a hilarious take on horror films, with all the corny elements that viewers expect. It's aided by a brilliant performance on the part of Seth Green that really keeps the movie rolling. Ticks does fall down a little when the giant tick bursts out of Panic, but you can forgive a movie anything when it makes you laugh for 90% of the time. This is well worth a watch if you can get hold of it - up there near Idle Hands as a classic horror spoof. 8/10
