The Nun (2018)
Able Contributiom to TCU.
I went into it with an average expectation and enjoyed the show. While there were a number of jump scares. I thought the creepy/spooky mood was established fairly well.
Definitely a standalone movie. I watcjed it at night by myself,, was properly scared a few times, and throughout felt a sense of dread/anticipation. Enjoyed the location, the castle and thought some of the shots were exceptional. The acting was well done also, and I thought they did a good job with the pqcing.
Felt dread enjoyed it.
Destination Fear: Missouri State Penitentiary (2021)
Feel Bad For Them
Nothing really happened. There was a couple knocks, and a couple of words from the Ovulus, but that's it. Hard to make a good episode out of that. Chelsea even had to go to the place that lady said she shouldn't, and nothing. Better luck next week!
Judas Ghost (2013)
Much Better Than Expected
It really was much better than I expected! Granted, I came in expecting a 4.7 IMDB, movie.
I found it very entertaining. Not the scariest of horror films but enough; likewise, light on fantasy but enough. It's a bit lower budget, and this shows with some of the effects and a few points during the acting.
I don't know, I just enjoyed it. As far as this type of movie with this rating, it's at the top; much better than the rest of this fare.
The only real drawback is the lack of backstory. It drops you right in cold but explains it throughout the movie. This can work in movies, I just felt it a touch ham-handed here.
All that being said, again, watch it.
Apparitional (2014)
A Cut Above Your Average Prison Haunt Film
First, this movie is definitely worth watching. It is a lower-budget ghost-hunter movie that really exceeds expectations. It is really well acted with only a few scenes as the exception. It has a proper dose of humor throughout as well.
At first I thought the lead guy was going to be like a poor man's Josh Gates, but soon realized I was wrong and his acting was spot-on. The other characters were enjoyable to watch also, and did a fine job.
Don't get me wrong, there are some scenes that highlight the modest budget they must have been on, but on the whole it was a fun film to watch. The scares were there in the 2nd half mostly but the whole thing was done as well as could be expected. I took note that it was a good script if not always delivered the best way.
It surprised me how much I enjoyed it. So if you're looking for horror and have seen most of what's out there, don't miss this one.
One of the better portrayals of ghost hunting, the way it's done nowadays, that I've seen.
The Dark and the Wicked (2020)
Slow Burner
6 out of 10 because there are more than a couple scenes in the film that seem just thrown in,, but it is still pretty congruent. While the story is nothing new, the movie tells it well. The acting is good.
There are a few jump scares, but the building of tension is the main source of the scare factor. I wasn't a fan of the ending but to each their own. The film certainly wasn't done a disservice by the ending, just not my cup of tea.
There is some gore, but not too much. It's a solid horror flick as long as you don't go in expecting to be blown away. Definitely worth watching considering the available fare out there.
Truth Seekers (2020)
Came upon it by chance and not a Pegg/Frost fanatic but...
On the fourth episode but I am thoroughly enjoying it. It's quite funny with a few jump scares but it's so well written that I don't mind not quite nailing the mark on either count.
Great stories with a good thread running beneath them all so far. The humor is absolutely fantastic in some parts though. It was disappointing to read that it's only 8 episodes. The partnership of Frost and Kayo works well.
McDowell is great for the small bits he does, an exquisite extra.
And yeah, there's not much Pegg/Frost screen time but that's fine as for me it stands on its own as is.
Since Astrid is just coming into real play in the 4th episode I can't comment much except to say the actress and her character seem to be quite solid.
I'm really looking forward to the next 4 episodes. If I don't update it's because it's happily more of the same!
We Go On (2016)
Surprisingly Enjoyable and Well Acted Movie!
Have to say from the get go, because it is a Shudder movie, this is not a horror film. That being said, I embarrassingly can not put on my finger on what I would call it. It does have some jump scares though I would say they are not gratuitous, they just add to the tenor of the scene for the most part.
The idea of the film was original enough for me to be interested, but I still thought I could rightly predict how it's all going to go down. While I was right a few times, I was wrong enough so that I was really engaged throughout. That's good, because there a few (only a few) sequences where the less-attentive among us might reach for the phone.
It seems like it is partly a study of how fear rules our life, but it's not fussy or pretentious about it. No it doesn't, but that is a central tenet of the film. It's also about guilt, fear and, well, these parts of everyone's life.
It's just a very good story that was very well directed with some actors who I recognize but could not name delivering very good performances. It's funny, I watched Don't be Afraid of the Dark last night and Guy Pearce, who I personally rate as an actor, was outclassed by everyone compared to his performance in that movie.
I will say I wonder if having two directors kind of kept it from being more focussed on a particular genre. The locations they used were excellent and truly added to or complimented every part of the movie. I would like to see this premise explored in a few different ways, with each focussing on a specific genre, as I don't know of a great many movies very similar to it.
Bottom line is either make time for it or don't turn the channel if you find it coming on. You won't be dissapointed.

A Mix of Funny Parts & Not-So-Funny Ones but There's More To It
My buddy, whose opinion I respect, ,sent me this and was raving so that was my expectation. I was underwhelmed at first. There was also the Hannah Gadsby comparison for the content, which was unfair because it came out before Nanette. So after stopping it and allaying that last bias as well as lowering my high expectation I went back to it; and it had some funny parts.
His personal narrative was the best part as well as offering up the funniest lines. It was never boring, just some of the jokes seemed a little cliche or low effort. His switch from personal story/anecdotes to one-liners was a little off-putting at first but by midway a flow had been developed.
Is this a constant flow of snickers and guffaws, no, very few are,, but it's darn insightful, funny and enjoyable to watch all the way through and I recommend giving it a go. I like the dude and look forward to hearing more.
In case you haven't heard of him before this like me, he was a writing partner with Dave Chapelle for the Dave Chapelle Show. But he stands on his own completely! (You really do, Neil.) Great work!
The Imitation Game (2014)
Between a 7 and an 8. Was a wonderful, multi-faceted film.
I did not know much concerning this movie going into this with my 15 y/o daughter and her friend. I knew it was about Alan Turing but since my daughter wanted to see it, I thought they had spiced it up a bit or something. (It turns out she just loves Cumberbatch and kept asking me if I was sure he was not homosexual.) Man, how can I describe it. Benedict does a great job as Turing, they even do a fantastic job replicating his looks from what pictures I've seen. It was suspenseful though I knew the basic gist, historically speaking; it was funny at times; it was engaging at all times; and ultimately triumphant but heartbreaking. Had my daughter and her friend near on tears at the end. It was a wonderfully done piece of history with just enough Hollywood to make it cinematic. If you like history at all, watch it. If you love Benedict or Keira, watch it; they both put in a solid performance. The interplay between all the cast seems genuine. It was fun. I recommend it.
Absentia (2011)
If you like to see a girl running...
I read many of the reviews before deciding to watch this and now ... I'm still meh. IMDb user chiownknee60 is pretty spot on in my estimation. There never was a feeling that this movie got to where I wanted it to go. It was not boring, but neither was it very exciting. Everything almost worked for me but nothing did completely. It is a good (enough) movie and I appreciated what the director was aiming for. For a low-budget movie it was awesome and better than many big-money flicks. I appreciated this endeavor for what it was and look forward to more works from Mr. Flanagan. I gave it four stars because I never was really scared or in suspense, and I was expecting much more. Hell, watch it but don't go into it expecting the world. Forgot to say, I did enjoy the score. It alone is enough to make anything a little more suspenseful. The acting was really good in some parts and so-so in others. Again, not a big-budget film but made good use with what he had.
The Wicked (2013)
It is not a Supernatural, but nor does it purport to be.
Good acting and good story but needs better direction. You know what your getting here, d2d teen horror of B+ quality. All that said, as others have said, if you like the genre it is worth watching. I did not find it as bad as some others. I watched until the end and though I would have preferred a few more scares, I don't feel like I was sold a bill of goods. It needs to use the storyline to better effect because similar plots have yielded superior movies but I would blame that more on direction than acting. Some of these actors really have what it takes while others... Well, you just have to laugh at how bad their acting is. That's part of the beauty of these movies to me.
