Cloud Atlas (2012)
A waterfall of imagination or a work of art? probably both!
I watched this movie a few days ago and I've now had some time to reflect on it. When I came out of the movie I wasn't sure if I'd watched a waterfall of pure imagination or a work of art. I'm now sure that it was both! Yes, this is a movie which will demand something from the spectators: we're asked to keep the parallel stories in our minds and then return to them as though they were tabs in our web-browser, and they all move forward, and yes, they are connected -although this is not immediately obvious, of course-. But, to be honest, this is very little to ask from us when we get so much in return! This is a movie with really outstanding acting. I've never been too fond of Hanks, but I was so impressed with the versatility and class of his performance that I think I've changed my mind completely about him!. I also think that Halle Berry was a brilliant choice also. This is also a movie with beauty strokes all over the place, the scenery, the photograph, the love between some of the characters... all wrapped up in a story that will keep you thinking long after you watch it, a story that will knock on some doors in your mind that you didn't think were there, and... maybe it's about time you opened them. Don't be deceived by the box office results in the US: the movie has made made +124 million worldwide (as of March 6, 2013). It's a pity that this movie didn't get the promotion it deserved. From a selfish perspective, that's just as well, for delicacies are better appreciated when the theater isn't full. ;)

A kick in the nose to the hypocrisy of some family ties
Actually, I think you've missed the whole point of the movie. Although most of the film does portray a nasty old lady, the truth is that most of her family members are just a bunch of hypocrites and she simply can't stand people being nice to her simply because she's old. They do not respect her, they pretend that they do, but they don't. The movie is a veiled criticism to the hypocrisy of those family ties. I liked her character from the very first minute because she's honest in the sense that she knows very well that those around her simply can't stand her nor do they respect her will to live and be free. Highly recommended.
