Snow Day (2000)
Much Better Than Its Rating
This movie is definitely underrated and has a lot of laughs. If you have kids in the 10-13 range they will really enjoy it, especially if you save it for an actual snow day when they're warming up between play sessions outside.
It's also fun for adults to watch with kids and has a great adult cast. I don't usually like Chris Elliot too much but he's perfect for the role of snowplow man. He sort of represents what kids might imagine the snowplow guy to be, some evil wrecker of fun.
I'd say it's better than a made for TV movie for sure... not quite as good as kids' classics like A Christmas Story but it's not trying to be that, even if it is reminiscent in certain moments. Think maybe somewhere between that level of quality and a Disney made for TV movie, throw in some late 80s and early 90s style humor and that's kind of where it lands.
Mrs. Davis (2023)
Inspired by Dirk Gently?
Mrs. Davis is partially satisfying my longing for the cancelled show Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, although I would have given the latter a higher rating. It shares the absurd quest format, exaggerated personalities, and crisscrossing storylines within an overarching and unfolding mystery. It's not quite as witty and the characters aren't as engaging. It's also unclear at this point whether it will all be tied together in a satisfying way but so far I'm intrigued. As others have stated, there are a lot of loose ends with more appearing in every episode and it's a bit difficult to figure out what is truly relevant to the plot vs. What is added just for the sake of being whacky. If they can tie most of it together and incorporate some deeper hero's journey allegory and symbolism, I may end up loving this show, but if it just keeps taking random twists and turns while providing few real answers or insights, I may lose interest.
Night Sky (2022)
Deeper Than Its Sci-Fi Plot
The sci-fi mystery in this show unfolds slowly but not unbearably so for those with an appreciation for its other positive attributes, which include an honest look at the insecurities surrounding aging, the trauma we all inevitably endure, and the complexity of our relationships with loved ones. If I read what I had just written, I may delay or forgo watching this series to avoid the depth for more distracting and fast paced entertainment but it is superbly executed in such a way turn the lens inward toward self reflection about one's own human condition and the possibilities that exist beyond the mundanity of the world's drudgery. Deeper still, this show is a spiritual allegory that brings into focus how extraordinary the gift of love is and how we can be led astray by mysteries that seem more profound only because they are outside the scope of normality - mysteries that are in fact perilous, unforgiving, and are meant to test whether we will abandon what we already have or avoid the work of becoming a better person to chase the cosmic carrot into oblivion.
Foundation (2021)
Cohesive and Well Acted. Looking forward to more!
I feel fans of the books are distorting the rating of this series and would perhaps benefit from viewing it independently of their expectations. The acting, dialogue, cinematography, special effects and pacing are all good. There is real potential for character development. This has all of the ingredients of a binge worthy 5+ years long series and from what I've seen so far it deserves about an 8.3 or above overall. Don't let the naysayers discourage you. Watch it with an open mind.
