RiffRaff (2009)
I was so pleased with this film! Panache!
Wow, I was so pleased with this film! I went into it thinking it was just another low budget indie but it was so much more. Fantastic performances from a huge cast. Rob Belushi (OJ) really stands out as excellent. Krissy Whitehead (May) succeeds as a lead and Ben Wells (Hughie) has all the sympathy. There was great snappy dialogue with a particularly Chicago panache. Set on the biggest beach in Chicago it really feels current, personal, and local. However, the sexual growing pains of its 18-21 year old characters is truly universal. The movie plays like, GO or KIDS. Serious relationship issues are not oversimplified nor do they bring down the film, and often are completed with hilarious contributions from the script that keeps the film's sense of humor intact.
The Marconi Bros. (2008)
Fogler and Sexton are directed very well.
What great chemistry these two guys have. This is not like Fogler's or Sexton's other work. Fogler is goofy but has genuine side as well (credit the directors for sure), unlike his other studio films. Sexton is amazing when you consider he is one of the rapist/murderers from Boys Don't Cry.
Its funny, its sad, it goes by fast because of tall the snappy scenes. Everyone is lovable, believable and at the same time a touch nutty. You gotta ask yourself, "Am I one of those people?".
It's a tough world for any comedy without 20M behind it. I hope this one does well.
