Fortress (2012)
Not a great movie but a good movie
I've seen just about every war film that has been produced and I have to admit after viewing Fortress I was not disappointed in the least. The acting was very good and to the point. No heroics about one man being the "save all" factor. Instead you are introduced to a group of men who share one thing and that is comradeship.
It's true there are some flaws in this movie but those "few" flaws can and should be overlooked. So the uniforms are a bit too new and clean and the aircraft looks as if it just came off the assembly line. It really doesn't matter. What few and I do mean few mistakes about the aircraft can and should be overlooked. Its the story line that gets the vote.
My reason for giving this story 8 stars is not just for the movie itself but for the added byline at the end of the movie. The director tells us all that given what he had to deal with he told a story. "There aren't but a few of these "flying fortresses" that are in flying condition to film in flight". So the director used computer generated planes. He tells of how he knows we the public are going to find flaws in the size of the rivets in the cockpit and other items about the aircraft but we need to get past that and enjoy a very good movie.
Other than these few minor flaws I found with this movie I would have to say it is every bit as good as Memphis Belle yet far better that Red Tails.
So keep an open mind and enjoy a truly good not great movie about WWII.
Memorial Day (2012)
What a movie!
What a movie! This movie isn't just a story about two wars but how both those wars affected the lives of two people. James Cromwell (Bud Vogel)is at his very best and his son John Cromwell (younger Lt. Bud Vogel)is what many would say is "a chip off the old block". Jackson Bond plays the young grandson Kyle Vogel while Jonathan Bennett plays Kyle as a grown man. The acting and portrayal of the participants is superb in every detail.
The story deals with flashbacks of war and torment and drives home the need to understand. It may be hard for me to tell you about the movie without spoiling it for you so I won't get into too much detail other than to tell you to sit down in a quiet room and watch this movie with an open mind and heart. Saving Private Ryan brought a tear to these old eyes of mine and I have to admit the same thing happened to me while watching this movie. So a box of tissues may be an added item to have nearby.
