The Vast of Night (2019)
A welcome throwback
The Vast of Night is imbued with the sense of mystery and unknown that people from the 50s would have felt when experiencing certain phenomena for the first time, and thus retains a fresh feel on a story told many times before.
It leaves us to wonder about motivation with only the speculative tales of a couple of people to fill in the blanks.
Lighting is manipulated in a clever manner, making it difficult for us to visually experience anything overtly unless absolutely necessary.
A nice science fiction thriller that draws the viewer into feeling the vulnerabilities of a small country town and its people.
Color Out of Space (2019)
Lovecraftian horror at its visual best
There aren't too many movies that have seared themselves into moviegoers' consciousnesses that are firmly presented as direct tellings of HP Lovecraft's tales. Considering his legacy and its significant influence upon the scifi and horror genres, this is kind of surprising. "Dagon" lacks the punch of convincing and frighful antagonists but is still worth a look and feels genuinely creepy. The Color Out of Space takes the mantle of the best of these films for now.
Richard Stanley makes a long overdue return to the screen with this movie which successfully conveys the truly alien nature of an unfathomable cosmic horror entity. Visually, it is quite gruesome in its transformation of living nature by a thoroughly corrupting influence. Be warned.
The Thirteenth Floor (1999)
Multilayered and entertaining
Christopher Nolan's Inception seems to have borrowed from the concepts of the 13th Floor, but his movie is much more widely known (and more confusing) than this one. Packs a lot into 90 minutes and worthwhile for those looking for low budget scifi gems. Although the acting is not terrible, some big name actors in this could have turned it into a hit. Visually, not overwhelming like the Matrix, but employs a more subtle film noir style that works no matter the environments it explores.
