The Jungle (2013)

Good Suspenseful Slow Burn
28 November 2013
I enjoyed this film. It had a real authenticity and sense of realism about it, it didn't pull any lame punches and when the scares hit they were very effective.

Its a slow burn so if you want fast paced gore and lots of blood forget it. I thought the suspense was really well done in that it is very minimal and really relies on sound to do a lot of the work, make sure you have the sound up.

I also liked the fact that we never really get to know what the thing is- leaves it up to the imagination which is always more powerful and scary than special effect and animatronics.

I also thought the acting was good especially the relationship between Larry the scientist and Adi the tracker.

The Reef (2010)
8/10
Very tense and thrilling
27 October 2010
The Reef is a good film it works the way a true thriller should, it doesn't reveal its hand all at once but instead builds and builds.

The characters are well played by a great Aussie cast all the actors are very believable and likable. Unlike Open Water in The Reef you do get to see a shark in fact its a very big and dangerous shark. The shark parts of the film are handle extremely well.

Based on a true event, The Reef feels very real. This sense of reality makes this shark film scary indeed it's what makes it stand above most other shark films. For me it sits somewhere between Open Water and Jaws.

Definitely worth checking out.

Black Water (2007)
10/10
Best croc film so far
20 October 2007
BLACK WATER is a thriller that manages to completely transcend it's limitations (it's an indie flick) by continually subverting expectations to emerge as an intense experience.

In the tradition of all good animal centered thrillers ie Jaws, The Edge, the original Cat People, the directors know that restraint and what isn't shown are the best ways to pack a punch. The performances are real and gripping, the crocdodile is extremely well done, indeed if the Black Water website is to be believed that's because they used real crocs and the swamp location is fabulous.

If you are after a B-grade gore fest croc romp forget Black Water but if you want a clever, suspenseful ride that will have you fearing the water and wondering what the hell would I do if i was up that tree then it's a must see.
