Carrie (2013)
didn't watch the original, but eh
I can't compare it to the original, but as a movie itself it was still eh. It wasn't that exciting or scary or shocking. It was pretty monotoned. The actors were great but the pacing and the script, not so much. Don't think i'll watch it again.
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019)
i enjoyed it but i won't rewatch it
I'm not a pokemon fan so i can't really judge about the whole expectations thing, but yeah the pokemons were hella cute. Also, ryan reynolds as pikachu was something i didn't know i needed until i saw one. His sarcasm was amazing for his character.
With that being said, plot wise...it was okay. I mean it went smoothly and there weren't any plot holes or anything. But it wasn't that exciting either. The ending was a little predictable, storyline pretty generic, nothing new. Like i said, it's those movies you'd enjoy watching but would go out of your way to rewatch it. I guess it's entertaining enough for kids though!
Puss in Boots (2011)
still love it a decade later
When this first came up i remember i absolutely loved it - the characters, the plot, the comedy. It's been a decade and i've forgotten about it until it recently came up on netflix, and i decided to rewatch it.
And i get why i was obsessed with it as a kid now. Puss in boots (the cat, not the title) is like the nick wilde in zootopia. Take it as you will. The storyline is pretty solid, full of action, fun for both kids and adults. The kind of movie you'd watch if you're bored, and will keep you entertained for the next 96 minutes. It's just a fun, feel good movie.
New Girl (2011)
it's my comfort show now
Oh wow.
When i got into this show i didn't expect it to be this good. I thought it was just something i'd binge as buffer time before i rewatch shows i love again. Turns out, this became part of the list of shows i'd rewatch.
The characters have amazing chemistry right from the pilot. They're all equally unique. They all have their own strengths and flaws as a human being that just works with the comedic formula they use.
Each character is so amusing in their own ways it's hard to pick a favourite. They have plenty of iconic plot lines and quotes, and i don't regret watching this one bit. In fact, i'm ashamed i haven't started watching this earlier. SUCH an underrated sitcom, i wish more ppl watched it so i could talk about it more!
Friends (1994)
my introduction to sitcoms
Excluding those nickelodeon shows i watched as a kid, friends was my introduction to "adult" sitcoms, and i'm thankful that it was. Although it may no longer be my most favourite sitcom, it's still a classic gem that's dear to my heart. Watching it somehow makes you feel like you're given a warm calming nostalgic hug. It's an iconic show and it truly deserves the recognition it gets.
New Girl: Pilot (2011)
a good pilot
My review may be a little biased since i have watched about 5 of the episodes in season 2 before, which made me like this show and want to watch it from the start.
As a pilot, i think it fulfils its job - introduces the characters, shows us the "world", has a good plot and jokes. I've never seen any of Zooey Deschanel's works before but from what i see in this show, she's fantastic at the role. I love her character and what it brings to the show. The other characters each also has their unique personalities, and is used well for comedic effects and plots. It makes me want to watch the next episode to find out more and that's enough for me to make it a good pilot.
Cuckoo: Ken on E (2012)
one of their best episodes so far!
I loved it! We finally got to see a different sided of ken and to see him and cuckoo really bond. The plots and comedy were great too.
Cuckoo: Family Meeting (2012)
good storyline
Enjoyed the story and the jokes. Nothing exceptional but still liked it.
How I Met Your Mother: Pilot (2005)
a good pilot
It does what a pilot should do and does it well - it introduces the characters, the type of comedy, the overall vibe, the plot. The only part it failed for me, personally, was making me want to watch the next episode to find out more. Though i think this has more to do with the style of sitcom i prefer. I'm aware people love this show and this wouldn't stop me from continuing to watch the show. In fact, i think this is the kind of show that needs some warming up before i get used to the style and then genuinely enjoy the show.
It's not bad at all, it just has more to do with personal taste. I can see why those who enjoy it do, and i guess that's what's most important afterall.
(if this review didn't make much sense it's because i'm writing this at 3am and i might be a bit delusional, so i apologise in advance for the bad structuring)
Hotel Transylvania (2012)
perfect for kids, enjoyable for adults
This movies is filled with everything that's in the recipe for a perfect kids movie: fun, humour that kids can understand, and a meaningful lesson that's learnt. On top of that, "adult" or "harder to understand" jokes were included so that even if say a parent were to join their kid to watch this, they wouldn't get bored too easily.
It teaches about prejudice, think romeo and juliet but with a happy cheerful tone and ending, oh, and friendly monsters.
On a more critical note, the pacing was very well, the music was great for what it was, voice actors perfect for their roles, animation well done, interesting and well thought plot. The attention to details was great too.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
it lives up to it's hype
I was a little late into watching this but i'm aware it had a lot of hype during the peak of 2020 pandemic. I ended up watching it and the audiences are right, it's fantastic. Beautifully written, accurate costumes, good use of colour theory, and well paced. Great casting, Anya Taylor-joy especially shines in her role as the main character. Portrays that women can be smart and beautiful without having to sacrifice one for the other. Since the show is short, it makes u want to watch the entire thing at one go - that's how good it was.
Cuckoo: The Homecoming (2012)
so far so good
First off, andy samberg once again nails his character (title of his sex tape). The casting is great and each character brings something to the show, great chemistry, great comedy. It was good enough of a pilot to make me want to watch the next episode, which is sort of the whole point of a pilot, so in that terms, the show did a great job. I can't say much more so i guess i'll have to continue watching it.
Mean Girls 2 (2011)
I wish it wasn't related to the original
Let's get this straight: if this were a movie made by Disney as one of those cheesy chick flicks for kids and teens to watch, then yeah, it did a great job. It's the only reason i rated it 2 and not a 1.
But it's NOT. It's the sequel to THE mean girls. This film was literally shot in the span of 22 days. Whatever that the original executed amazingly was destroyed and ruined. One reason the original did so well was because Regina George was a believable, realistic, high school bully. The way she got revenge was the way most teens girls do nowadays. On the other hand, the "Regina George" here is your classic unrealistic Hollywood version of what adults think teen bullies are like.
I'll be honest, I don't even remember the names of the girls because they were so forgettable. The fashion choice was horrible too, when dressing well is one of the mean girls "thing". It felt cheap and ugly. There weren't any memorable quotes either, while the original had plenty. The plot was childish and, for the millionth time, unrealistic.
I'd expect this kind of style from Disney because that's their thing, but this isn't, and the fact that it's supposed to be the sequel to the original infuriates me.
Plus One (2019)
exceded expectations
The plot is pretty much a typical rom-com, but the portrayal was amazing. As the others said, maya erskine's portrayal of her character was phenomenal, and really spices up the film. It's the kind of film you'd wanna watch it again for the fun ride you'll be going through. It was well paced and developed, i loved it.
Tall Girl (2019)
it was so boring i didn't finish watching it
It's just, bad. So bad. The movie is about a tall girl...and that's about it. Highly unrealistic too. Don't bother watching it.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013)
binge-worthy show
Friends is a great sitcom in a sense of those nostalgic troop on sitcoms. Brooklyn 99 is a more modern take on sitcoms and it works really well. I honestly have nothing to complain.
I personally have nothing against laugh tracks for old sitcoms, and i think they work when they work. B99 doesn't use any laugh tracks, and for them, that works really well. The jokes are well written and so is each character.
Each character has their own "thing", and the relationship dynamic each character has with others are all unique and fun in their own ways, not to mention the racially diverse cast they have.
People say the show got worse through the seasons but i'd disagree. The main "problem" people had with it was that the characters changed, but change is unavoidable. It only makes sense for the characters to have flaws, and grow to become a better person. The character development each of them had is amazing, and were done at the right pace. The show didn't get worse, the characters just grew as a human.
The concept is new and great too. They took the concept of cop shows, what was usually looked as a "serious" typed drama show, and turned it into a fun sitcom that actually works.
I'd definitely rewatch it as many times as i can.
Palm Springs (2020)
fun, charming, and 2 characters with great chemistry
I came across this as i was looking for a movie to kill time. I noticed 1. Andy samberg was in it, 2. It had a cool concept and 3. I haven't heard of it before soi decided to give it a go, and wow. Way beyond my expectations. I thought it was just gonna be a chiill movie i'd watch once but it was actually really interesting. The drunken personality chemistry between samberg and milioti was amazing. The plot was well written, and there was the perfect amount of fun, jokes, and seriousness. I'd definately watch it again.
