Beacon 23 (2023)
Had a beacon of hope
This was so promising, then they started doing too much. I'm not really into sci-fi shows to begin with but the first episode was really good! I liked it before they introduced the giant thing she could talk to. The first 3 episodes had me hooked then I kinda lost track of the storyline. The actors are great so I will return for season two. Halan and Harmony are my favorites, they really bring the show to life. I just hope the writers don't get too crazy this time around. Develop 1-2 stories at a time or return back to the original plot of it being a lighthouse where people drop in from time to time.
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Leave the ending behind
The stupidest ending of all time, ALL. You invest 2 hours into a movie, just to be let down??? Mahershala Ali deserved so much more. I had to check the time remaining to make sure it was actually the end. It was. I don't care if it was symbolic, explain what the hell just happened.
Aside from the ending, which was worse than GOT. The camera angles were good. The music was okay. I liked the different stages. Let me see what else, only 160 characters remaining. Great acting from everyone involved. Hopefully they don't have nightmares about the ending. It feels unresolved. Oh for my squeamish folks, someone threw up about an hour and 45 mins in. Which is exactly how I felt about the ending of this movie. Cheers.
The Plus One (2023)
Few laughs
Some moments were a little cringy but I stuck with it. It was decent. If you're watching this thinking Cedric is going to be in it in it, he's not. He was sprinkled in but completely absent from a few of the scenes.
As far as the writing goes, some scenes were rushed and Marie was far too annoying, like grow up annoying. Ashanti did a good job acting and singing but that song she sung was NOT a wedding song whatsoever. She was also gaslight by her fiancé throughout the entire movie, how was he not on her side???
I liked the Mom and Julissa. The ad placements were obnoxious but the brownie scene was funny. All in all, it got a few laughs out of me.
Creed III (2023)
A knockout
This movie was incredible from start to finish. Top tier acting from everyone. I didn't even miss Stallone. I would love to see more of MBJ and Jonathan Majors in films together! They did a hell of a job. I do wish we could've seen more of Majors, like what was his time like in jail? Did he fight and make a name for himself? I still love the route it went but if I had one complaint that would be it.
Anyway, the music was fire. I saw someone complaining about the lack of "diversity" in this film, two words. Grow up. There were plenty demographics represented. Save your WT for Dr. Phil.
Lastly, I loved the way this film was shot. I went home talking about the last scene where the crowd disappeared. Brilliant. Downvote me, upvote me. Ima see it again.
You People (2023)
Laugh a little
I thought it was good. Though some of the characters were one dimensional. It made me laugh. Eddie was great in this role and I loved seeing Lauren London back on the big screen. It felt a little rushed. We should've seen more of their bachelorette / bachelor parties. Huge opportunity missed here. Also after the engagement party, it's like they were like, let's wrap it up in the quickest/most predictable way ever. The audience should've seen Eddie and Jonah's mom have a come to Jesus moment beforehand. There were some cool guest appearances like Deon Cole and Mike Epps. I give it a solid 6.5-7. I'd watch it again.
Devotion (2022)
Devotedly a great film
This movie was incredible. I loved it. Truly broke my heart. Johnathan Major never fails. His acting was superb in this film. Glen Powell also did a great job. Man, the two of them really brought this movie to life. The visuals were also cool. Shoutout to the music department!!! I would love to see Christina Jackson in more films. I don't want to give too much away but I will say I had to decompress after this movie. I also recommended it to all my friends so take that for what it's worth.
To Canarsiekid who said why not tell the true story without race? How it could be a true strong without his race??? This was the 1950's, he was the only Black pilot. He dealt with so much racism he kept a book and used it as motivation. You want them to omit this? All the trouble he faced?
Hispanics get no love? Go create your own movie or book. This is not about you right now. Why must we kick down these doors for you???? We have been trying to even the playing field for years. We started the movement but somehow we're still dealing with so much and we're expected to be quiet and compliant about it. We climb and climb and climb and still get hate from other minorities. You are the problem. Go watch Encanto.
The School for Good and Evil (2022)
This school held my attention
This movie was great and no I haven't read the books, it was made into a movie for a reason. I went in not knowing what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. The concept, the music, the costumes, all incredible. Kerry Washington was amazing! I loved her in this! So beautiful and funny. Really commanded the screen. Charlize Theron gave us nothing. She was boring and didn't embody the role as the evil professor at all. Very bland. I would've preferred Angela Bassett, Anne Hathaway, somebody but Charlize was Thewrong person for this. Whew, now that that's out. The other actors were great! I wish we would've seen more from the wolves, the gnome & the legend Laurence Fishbourne. Also why couldn't Agatha use her powers to stop Sophie?? I like how Sophie progressed throughout the film but I would have like to see Agatha do the same. She was just too good. I also which she would've stayed behind to form her own life. Either way, I'm hoping for a pt 2.
Marry Me (2022)
No, just no.
Turned it off after the church scene. Terrible. And I love a good cheesy rom-com but this ain't it. What else can I say? Owen was typical Owen and J Lo was J Lo. I do not recommend. Sheesh I still haven't reached 150 characters? So bad, it led me here. I put on a film from 1995.
Ambulance (2022)
Gonna need snack support
A. This movie was not woke at all. I don't get how other viewers had this compliant.
B. There were a lot of shots that could've been cut. Sure seeing the side of the first three building was cool at first but after about the 12th one, enough is enough.
C. Was this movie realistic? No, but it's a movie, lighten up.
D. Great acting from Yahya! He's becoming a fav! Jake fell out of character during some of the scenes in the bank, but he made up for it in the end. Eiza was a nice touch as well! Really embodied her role! Wale was hilarious! Would love to see more of him!
E. All in all, it was an action / comedy / thriller film. Two hours long. Very Michael Bay-ish. I'd watch it again.
Deep Water (2022)
Deep potential
Lil Rel was a highlight of the film and he had maybe 10 minutes of screen time. This movie had potential but went left after we found out Ben was responsible for the first killing. It's like of course he's going to be responsible for the next few but I was expecting him to get arrested, have one of the guys fight back, get his own side piece. Something. No excitement or creativity. The cops played no role & Ben just lets his daughter have a drink in the end? Tying down the last guy with his own belt? Logic has left the chat. The wife wasn't terrible just boring. Is it an open relationship or no? Too many holes in the plot. Watch, if you're bored at home on a Saturday.
Grand Crew (2021)
Grand love
I thought my favorite episode was the pie shop one but turns out it's the season finale! This show is funny!! I love how it depicts real life, day to day ish. Like ppl not wanting to go to therapy, men not wanting to cry in front of their friends, the ups and downs of dating & omg the negations episode, I need Nicky as my life coach. I love the whole cast tbh. As a Black person, I can say I'm not hanging out at a wine bar as often as I would like, but hell it's close enough, this is me & my friends at brunch on a Sunday. Hoping we'll get a second season cause y'all left us HANGING.
Bust Down (2022)
Bust out in tears!
Nah this show is hilarious. I was not expecting to laugh this hard. How do they say their lines with a straight face? Something might actually be wrong with Chris & Jak. Guaranteed tears whenever they're on screen. Sam is comedy & Freddie Gibbs, gold! He's always on time. Dominque Perry is one of my favs!! The light skin scenes. TEARS. Langston kills me. Now I know how my brother feels. Hoping they'll get a second season, I'll rewatch S1 in the meantime.
The Batman (2022)
The Boring Batman
I fell asleep 3 times. I would've walked out if I didn't pay $11 for a ticket. The acting was there but the story line? All over the place. I'm okay with it being dark but I feel like there was no real purpose in this film, just explosion and fight scene one after the other. I would have liked to see more of Zoe as she did really well in her role. Robert did a good job too, it just sucks that they were giving such a horrible story line. The coolest scene was in Gotham square garden but other than that I should've stayed home.
Abbott Elementary (2021)
I'd enroll for 12 more seasons
This shows is hilarious!! It depicts the real life issues many teachers face but still manages to make you die laughing. It's astounding how teachers are so underpaid but I digress. The principal kills me!! I would love to guest star one day as her best friend. Omg the garden episode was gold!! I have been watching Tyler and Ms. Sheryl Lee Ralph for years now! This definitely goes in their top 5! Love, love, love. I really feel like Lisa Ann isn't acting, she just shows up as herself, it's so good. I took a few pointers from her on dating LOL. Chris kills it too! The way he climbed out of his car window lives rent free in my head. I need to see more of Mr. William Stanford Davis and the lunch man, they're hidden gems. Quinta, my girl Quinta, QUINTAAAA, you are hilarious. Come collect your Emmy now sis!! Thank you for making tv watchable again. ABC, we want 11 seasons like modern family, if not, more. Thanks in advance.
Bel-Air (2022)
90's baby approved
This show just really pulls you in! I love the connection to the OGs. I'm still waiting for Ashley and Will to have their dance scene but all in all I'm impressed!! The acting is phenomenal. I relate most to Aunt Viv as she is a creative who speaks her mind. I will say, I'm just as fly as Hillary though. I love that she is branching out on her own! Ugh I really can't chose my favorite character, but I will mention how fine Uncle Phil is (heyyyy) and I would like to see more of Geoffrey. Carlton. Carlton plays his role a little too well because he gets under my skin like no other LOL. I love this show!! Kudos to the writers. Go ahead and start typing up seasons 2-10 cause I'm ready.
That Damn Michael Che (2021)
That Damn Michael Che better have season 2 & 3 loaded
I made an account just to leave this review because what y'all not gon do is act like this show isn't the funniest thing you've watched all year. I binged it and just about woke my neighbors up from laughing so hard. I think it's what we needed, it touched on a lot of topics. While I found Michael Che to be hilarious on SNL, I'm happy he finally has a space to share his creativity( even if it's not the regular HBO) Last thing, the Hail Mary scene was brilliant. As someone who's never been to Catholic Church as soon as the priest asked if he knew it, I was like the song?
