Here Today (2021)
Melodrama that drags
Billy Crystal plays an aging Jewish comedy writer in the initial stages of Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease, who is trying to hide symptoms of dementia from family and co-workers. Enter Tiffany Haddish, playing the no nonsense, wisecracking Black woman. Occasionally amusing hijinks ensue. A long-festering family conflict plays out in the background.
At nearly two hours running time, the movie drags to a predictable happy ending. Should have been 30 minutes shorter.
Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011)
Slow and Meandering
This could have been a very funny ensemble comedy if the hokey sentimentality had been stripped out of the screenplay and the two hour, twenty minute running time had been reduced by an hour. The early scenes with Steve Carrell and Ryan Gosling are great; the dynamic is repeated in The Big Short. The second half of the movie drags. Marisa Tomei and Kevin Bacon are wasted. The plot line involving the son and the baby sitter could have been deleted entirely and the movie would have been much improved.
