American Auto (2021)
Awful people
Really wanted to like this show, even with the environmental disaster that is American car industry as the MacGuffin (if there was some irony there, they failed to demonstrate it). The worst part is that the characters are so painfully cringe, unredeemingly awful, one dimensional, self-serving and not the kind of people I'd want to spend 30 minutes with, even if it is to laugh at. Not that there were any laughs. The situations are not amusing. Characters' choices are not amusing. This show has a good pedigree and a promising cast, shame they are wasted. Well produced, it looks like every other show, but that's about as compelling a reason to watch as saying it's in colour and not blurry.
Your Christmas or Mine? (2022)
Miscast Brit Xmas RomCom
Sadly the female lead was miscast, no sparkle, no presence, inauthentic and zero chemistry with the charismatic male lead. And what were the costume department thinking, poor girl. I didn't believe in their relationship, their romance or that they had any connection. With such a large pool of talent from which to choose, why? The rest of the cast spans several generations of the cream of British acting talent, peddling hard to give some energy to a flat and predictable story, but it's Christmas and it was an engaging way to spend a little time. Shame I was rooting for the couple at the centre to split up after the first few minutes, their romantic connection felt about as warm and fuzzy as a cold turkey.
Magpie Murders (2022)
What a waste of (mostly) great talent
Lesley Manville is exceptional in everything, and the book is a good read, but what went wrong here? I was willing to stick with it but had to turn off due to the excruciatingly bad acting of a female character that comes in half way through the first episode. Peppered with great actors who come and go with nothing much to do, all verging on overacting - director, hang your head - all to ridiculously overblown orchestral music to much plot set-up and no action. They all try very hard - too hard - but this misses the mark. Actually subscribed to Britbox to watch this, what a shame.
