Madame Web (2024)
Best from Marvel in a long time.
I am a big fan of Dakota Johnson's so maybe I'm prejudiced but I loved this movie. I was emancipated as a teen and had a lot in common with the teenagers Madame Web shepherds in this beginning story. I loved her relationship with her mother and her self. This was so unexpected, as I expected another story where brawn and muscle and cool costumes always win.
I hope there are more Madame Web stories to come out.
The special effects were great and didn't get in the way of the story. I gave it a nine instead of a ten because the woods didn't look real enough to me. That's my excuse. I never read ten star reviews so I gave it nine. That's the reason.
A Haunting in Venice (2023)
Spooky and Weird
I read the book as a teenager so expected something different, more like the other movies in this set. This was better than expected. I thought the scares were keeping me tense and on the edge of my seat. The relationships between parents and children (no spoilers) provided the heart of the story. The actors all did a wonderful job. Branagh showed a vulnerable side of his detective I loved. Jude Hill and Jamie Dornan were able to show a depth that blew me away. I really liked this on the big screen. The sound was so good it made me jump twice. I have to go back to see it again to figure the story out. The ending was not all what I saw coming.
Book Club: The Next Chapter (2023)
Great Friendship Movie
I loved the original Book Club as an older woman. The Fifty Shades trilogy changed me just like the characters in the movie and without the movie I might never have read them. EL James had a cute cameo in the first one and I absolutely loved that. So I came to this movie wondering how these women were doing, like they were friends of mine.
I loved the characters and the scenery and the romance. There were references to the book The Alchemist about looking for signs when they made decisions. It did not introduce me to any new ideas however so it was just a fun vacation after all. I will watch it again. I had fun.
The Island (2005)
Best Micheal Bay film.
I loved this movie. It was fun and different and cool. So many characters added layers of real and layers of human feeling and layers of humor. Scarlett Johansson was perfect as the gullible Jordan Delta 4 who was prepared to fight because of a computer fight game. Ewan McGregor played the male lead well with some innocent and intelligent action scenes. This movie made me consider the consequences of cloning but mostly it was fun and satisfying.
The 9th Life of Louis Drax (2016)
Great story with lots of twists and turns.
I enjoyed this movie. I enjoyed the voice over as the main character expresses what his life has been, up until the accident that left him in a coma. It seems so beautiful- the words, the sea images, the horror of his life experiences. Other reviewers seemed upset that it did not fit in a tidy genre. They kept trying to figure out what aisle it should be marketed on. It was great storytelling. The actors did a great job. The director did a great job. It was a mighty fine movie and I have watched it four times. So far.
Shadows in the Sun (2009)
Lovely film about Family and Friendship
Jean Simmons is remarkable in her role as an older woman living on her own and not wanting to be controlled by her son who wants to move her away from all she holds dear. At the center of the story is a young man she has befriended and who treats her and everyone with quiet respect. He changes how they each see their life and family even though he is an outsider and a bit odd, played by Jamie Dornan. The film can be slow, like walking with a grandparent when you are a kid. But it is worth it. I saw it with a ninety year old friend and she said "You better make some younger friends or when you are my age you won't have any." The Jean Simmons character was a great friend with an open mind. It was inspiring.
