Angel on the Amazon (1948)
Rare Gem
I have had the GREAT JOY of FINALLY locating this film after not seeing it in about 30 years! Like some of the earlier comments, this haunting film has stayed with me since and just in the last few weeks, after persistently looking on the web to see if ANYONE had it on video for purchase,I FOUND a company named learmedia in Canada..I'm still pinching myself to believe that I have it at last! Angel on the Amazon is a film that still evokes romantic fantasy, psychological tension and a very satisfying ending.A must for those film collectors who find the needle in the haystack...Vera Hruba Ralston is a minor actress who gives a stellar performance and is backed by noted Brian Aherne,George Brent and Constance Bennett
No Sad Songs for Me (1950)
Beautiful understated Sullavan
I have seen many films of this theme a la dying of incurable illness..
Bette Davis made her dynamic imprint with Dark Victory.
Lana Turner moved beyond soap opera and made Madame X impossible to not
weep in her demise..
Margaret Sullavan simplifies and shines in a glowing performance in this film..
With her incredibly unique speaking voice, her subtleties that are hers alone, this
is an experience to marvel and weep over time and time again.
An undervalued jewel!
Magnificent Obsession (1935)
The Original Outshines
I'm SOOOOOO Glad that the 1935 version of Magnificent Obsession is being released along with the 1954 version..The newer version is getting all the hype, etc. but it truly is the 1935 version with Irene Dunne/Robert Taylor which is the understated and much better rendering. I have a poor video quality version, but better than nothing..hope the released version has been improved in restoration.John Stahl's solid directing makes the principal characters more realistic.Robert Taylor shows a palpable presence in his first main screen venture..and of course amongst Irene Dunne's early 1930 films, this simply is one of her very best!1935..classy...1954...somewhat sappy
Dark Victory (1976)
Underrated!
I have seen BOTH Dark Victory versions..1939/1976..While Bette Davis undeniably gives the vibrancy and subtlety in 1939,one needs to view the 1976 version INTACT/UNEDITED over many years..as I have seen Elizabeth Montgomery's version over the last 30+ years,I have found that a "very good" movie is a subtle masterpiece with more realistic truth paced out quite beautifully throughout the film...the music, dialogue and overall non-dated performances of Ms. Montgomery and Anthony Hopkins has a far more natural rhythm that hold up much better than the 1939 version.. Time reveals all..for me,who much prefers the OLD classics, this 1976 Dark Victory is the best!

Little Miss Broadway (1938)
Little Miss Broadway
Little Miss Broadway is a very enjoyable movie musical format in miniature with bright, bouncy tunes,a plot that moves with light touches of comedy, sentiment and slight conflicts..All the main characters perform solidly, but THE main sharply etched brilliant performance belongs to Edna May Oliver...when I was a child,I was at first repelled by her "mean old pumpkin" ways...OH! but to look closer as one grows older..WOW! What subtle hysterical faces and brilliance beneath that unique face and her ever so subtle softness of heart which peeks out more and more towards the end..She truly stands out..such a marvelous artist!
