Pieces of April (2003)
Clarkson and Holmes shine in 'Pieces'
Finally Katie Holmes proves that she can do serious acting and steps out of the show of Joey Potter. The story is interesting and thought-provoking, with the same comic irony that can be seen in the like of 'American Beauty'. The character played by Patricia Clarkson is however absolutely wonderful and is greatly entertaining and tragic. Clarkson turns in a great performance along with Holmes. Small but intriguing characters played by Sean Hayes and Alice Drummond add to the film's unique style. Peter Hedges has written an excellent tale of family and love which is far superior to his screenplay for 'About a Boy'. The film is shot on a digital camcorder which gives the film a sense of hard-to-come-by realism and almost grittiness.
Dark Angel: Pilot (2000)
Trash heap USA, Buffy similarities, and skinhead kids!
I would love to say I enjoyed every minute of this curtain-opener to the Dark Angel series, but I have to say there were some parts where I felt like changing the channel. I couldn't help notice that the US looks like a trash heap in this movie. Anyway, the idea of this TV movie is genius, what with trash-heap USA, a sexy teen who kicks ass (whoah, Buffy the Vampire Slayer flash) and children with shaved heads and barcode tattoos!!! All in all, this could have been a lot better but the episodes of the series are really very good.
