The Woman in the Window (2021)
It's very dull, overcast, moody and utterly slow.
It took at least four attempts to watch this film and it doesn't really get started until at least 50 mins in, kind of. Then just slows back down to a grinding halt. It's very dull, overcast, moody and painfully slow. Obviously a little twist on the original "Rear Window", but there really is no comparison. I would skip this film and watch the original Alfred Hitchcock classic, far superior.
Chick Fight (2020)
TikTok With A Budget
It's sad to see this kind of film being made. There's real talent out there, filmmakers who can only dream of making a their film a reality. Studios continue to plough money into productions like this, and with the streaming wars heating up you're only going to get more. It's a painful throwaway mess of a film. With Bella Thorne at the helm, what more can you say. It feels like a cross between an Adam Sandler and Melissa McCarthy production. Enjoy.
Them (2021)
Incredible. Breathtaking. Shocking.
It's so rare these days to see a streaming show made that has this kind of impact. At times it's a difficult watch, and purposely so. Visually mesmerising with gorgeous cinematography. In all honesty, this was made for the cinema. I can't tell you how good this show is. There's so much to learn by watching this. Incredible. Breathtaking. Shocking. Stellar Cast. Emmy worthy. No doubt due to its context this will slip under the radar, I hope not.
Calls (2021)
Made For Podcast Not TV
A new one from Apple TV+. This is more of a concept idea than something that should be a television show. It really sits within the podcast domain. Imagine sitting in front of your computer and watching an abstract screen saver for 20 mins, this is it. The first few episodes felt very novelty and are ok. It's an interesting concept, I felt it was one episode too long. I would be surprised if Calls was renewed, it's very limited. Would work better as a podcast.
Calibre (2018)
Intense, dark and brilliant
Wow. This is an intense, dark and brilliant film. It's a psychological thriller that just works. This is my second watch now with it being on Netflix. Everything about this film is what you would expect from a perfect thriller. A great cast, the two lead actors where perfect. The supporting cast also gave it that unnerving undertone that just works. I highly recommend this film for those who love thrillers.
Angel of Mine (2019)
A Superb Psychological Thriller
Wow. Where did this film come from? What an incredible film and outstanding cast. Magnificent performance by Noomi Rapace. Taking the film at face value when a mother is dealing with the loss of her daughter. You can't help be overwhelmed by her grief, such an amazing performance. I highly recommend this film.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
A Breathtaking Visual Let Down By JaJa The Dragon
This is one of most beautiful and stunning animated films I've seen in a long time. Sure the story has a common formula, that doesn't make it a bad film. It's simply gorgeous to look at. Kelly Marie Tran is wonderful as Raya. The supporting cast are great. I didn't like the dragon, at times it felt very JaJa Binks and when Awkwafina toned it down the dragon made a more likeable character. I just wish the film had cut back on the cartoon moments, for me that let it down. I would still recommend this film, and kids are going to love it.
WandaVision (2021)
Over The Top FX For Coping With Loss
WanderVision is a perfect example of an overrated show made for its hardcore Marvel fanbase. It's a story of coping with the loss of a loved one. It's not a terrible show, but it's definitely not got the greatest either. It has a very slow start and is fairly predictable. The last episode goes down pretty much how you expect, and is obviously where all the money was spent for the visual effects. Fans of Marvel will love this show.
The Surface (2014)
A Film About Sailing Into Depression
So I thought I would take a chance and try this Amazon offering. It's like playing lucky dip with a lot of films on Amazon. What can you say about it? There was nothing thrilling about it, it was a poorly directed look at depression. Painful script writing that led to this awkward dialogue between the only two actors in the film. Neither one I cared for. I wouldn't recommend this film, not even the delightful Sean Astin can save this one.
Secret Obsession (2019)
Beautiful Home
Made for TV, or in this instance, made for Netflix, it's that type of film. I was curious since it had Brenda Song, and I always found her funny in The Social Network for the small part she played. The house in this film is gorgeous, nice panoramic shot of the outside, nice entrance, love the stairs. Wasn't too sure about the railings, but you can always change that? As for the film, it's exactly what you expect. Cliche, fairly obvious, mediocre acting, forgettable film.
Rebecca (2020)
Wonderful Remake Of A Classic Story
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Everyone turned in a great performance. Beautiful set pieces, great cinematography. Kristin Scott Thomas delivers a stand out performance as the wicked head housekeeper and Lily James is equally appealing as Mrs de Winter. The film is shot in England at the beautiful Cranborne Manor and Hatfield House and is a wonderful psychological thriller with twists and turns right up until the end. I highly recommend watching this on a lovely rainy afternoon, in front of a log fire.
Losing Alice (2020)
Apple+ Strike Gold With Erotic Thriller
I'm really enjoying Apple's approach to programming on their new Apple+ network. No bloated fillers or bargain basement straight to DVD content. Losing Alice is a perfect example of talented film making, writing, cinematography and fantastic acting. In this erotic psychological thriller from Sigal Avin everyone plays their part well, however, it's Lihi Kornowski who is the stand out performer. Lihi is mesmerising, and engaging - you can't take your eyes off her when she's on the screen. I highly recommend Losing Alice if you love psychological thrillers.
The Little Things (2021)
Miscast Actors, Awkward Acting, Odd Little Film
OK, so on paper, you have three great actors, and a potentially good story? I'm not sure. Denzel Washington is always a pleasure to watch, he's so charismatic. On the other hand, you have Rami Malek who feels very miscast and Jared Leto who at times is unintentionally funny - it just didn't work. The acting felt very awkward and misplaced. It's worth watching if you're a fan of these actors, but you're not missing anything if you don't see it.
Big Sky (2020)
Click Bait & Misleading Promotion From Disney+
Not the greatest fan of Ryan Phillippe, but he was the reason I was interested in this all new Disney+ Star show. Sadly, the trailer and promotion is misleading, and feels like click bait. Ryan plays the lead actor for the pilot episode only, his character is killed off by the end. Episode two, it's immediately obvious what type of show this is now, it's a female led, female centric show. And that's fine, it's just not for me.
