Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024)
Love is blind for spies
At first I was kind of turned off by the idea of a reimagining of the original movie, which wasn't overly amazing in my opinion but had extraordinary chemistry between Jane and John. Also the reviews on here put me off from watching the show any sooner. Anyways...
A few elements of the movie are still present in this series, such as the witty dialogues and brilliant chemistry between all of the characters. The 8 episodes fly by in an instance and leave you wanting for more (even if the cliffhanger is rather annoying in my opinion).
The series builds upon the movie instead of retconning everything or ignoring its existence. Everything that happened in the original may have happened but in the same time- maybe not. It honestly doesn't matter, as the concept stays the same. Except that both of them know from the start, that they're spies. And they're matched together. Tinder for spies I guess.
I love the music, vibe, cinematography and overall story. Give it a chance and don't pay too much attention to all of these subpar reviews. I couldn't get them if I tried.
Rick and Morty: How Poopy Got His Poop Back (2023)
On the verge of falling off
First and foremost- the voices sound fine. They are not the reason for the 7/10.
The episode starts strong, with the whole family trying to get rid of Mr. Poopybutthole, who has been living in their living room for quite some time. Rick then tries to do it his way but has to contact his old friends soon after, to throw an intervention for Mr. P, who is struggling after his wife left him.
The premise is fine. I guess it's kind of weird to start off a season premiere without focusing on the main characters all that much. What feels really different and odd tho, is the structure. Everything feels kind of disconnected and just barely holds on to the common thread. The stakes are also baffling low, even for a side story.
It just hit me- there wasn't even any b-story this time! This episode in particular would have benefited a lot from one.
I'm staying positive. The season has just started and who knows, maybe it'll pick up the pace.
Ready or Not (2019)
I was waiting for more
The ending kind of makes it worth it. Otherwise it's a generic horror flic with little to no tension, due to the fact that there's almost no quiet moments.
The only character they got right is the main character itself. In my opinion she plays her part solidly and manages to convey a sense of terror that she is forced to live through. Also some of the imagery is staged beautifully.
There was so much unused potential. She never really got face to face with every character for example, the backstory of the ritual wasn't really told in a compelling way and like I've said, there just isn't a lot of tension.
I would love for the movie to lean into its supernatural elements a lot more. But hey.
Sex Education: Episode 8 (2023)
Oh man...
The first season is a masterpiece, the second season manages to stand on it's own, the third season is on par with the first. But the fourth and last?? What happened? What the hell happened. Almost every major secondary character left the show. Like Jacob for example, who was made out to be a great part of Jeans life. But no, they broke up between seasons. Otis Ex and her weird girlfriend? Gone. Erics Ex? Gone.
What they do instead it's to throw a bunch of new characters at you (who are all one dimensional btw) and expect you to care for them. Like what the hell, it's the last season! I don't care for these boring, all too positive characters! I care for Otis and Maeve, who barely had any screen time together and didn't convey the tension they did on the seasons before that. I care for Adam and Eric, who met talked ONCE in this whole season! Also- you HAVE to love yourself is such a weird front from Erics side. Weird behaviour thats kind of glamourised if you ask me.
What the hell happened? And don't get me started on the ending... Somehow they managed to set up a bigger cliffhanger than the third season. If it's the LAST season, there's NO NEED for a cliffhanger, alright? And if it's supposed to be an ending, then don't make it feel so abrupt! Ffs, I'm just really disappointed in this show's decline in quality. I was so invested in their lifes but everything that happened this season felt so boring and safe. Man, what a shame.
Talk to Me (2022)
Original and timely horror movie, a future classic
What if ghosts were cool again? How's it possible to achieve such task? It's by giving Gen Z a prominent voice and making them heard.
The movie feels passionate and alive with its witty dialogue and relatable characters. It doesn't try to relate to the younger generation, it just does. It's fast paced, re-contextualises the form of communication with the other entities and makes sure that it feels fresh.
I like, that the main character is somewhat unlikable. She's relatable and you can understand her motivation behind her actions, but that doesn't take away that she's a egoistic and narrow minded person. Although some characters feel a bit too cartoonish, it adds to the youthful feeling of the film.
I'm excited what RackaRacka comes up with in part 2. Part one sure does leave enough room for interpretation and theories. For me, it doesn't have to get any deeper than that. I hope, that they'll stay true to the ambiguous feeling of the original and don't try to go big with the next one.
Barry: wow (2023)
Wow. That's dark.
What a ride it has been. I can't believe, that one of the best series of our generation ended just now.
It was fun to theorise about what was going to happen to all of the characters that we love and to see it play out how it was supposed to was a sight to behold.
Everyone was extremely worried, that the ending would feel rushed. There was no way that they could fit all the storylines and craft a fitting conclusion. Well, they just did. And proofed simultaneously, that 35 minutes are just right. It doesn't have to have feature length.
Not everyone got what they deserved. And I'm very happy with that. Hank died in the arms of his loved one, Gene got imprisoned after killing Barry, Sally got to go and have a career and Henry is seemingly living a normal life.
What I expected the least was, that Fuches was going to have a heroic ending. He really did redeem himself, proving that it was possible if the circumstances are right. For Barry, they were not. If he was going to be imprisoned, the cycle would likely continue. There had to be serious consequences for his actions and he got them.
All in one the show left me with a bitter feeling in my chest. It was poetic, beautiful and tragic all at once. I can't wait to revisit the series one day. Thank you, Bill Hader.
Wow.
Barry: a nice meal (2023)
Worry not
This show keeps surprising me. The episode has struck a nice balance between drama and comedy and continues to pull us to the series inevitable conclusion. I'm sure, that it's going to be heartbreaking.
It's a story about changing as a person and whether it's even possible. Each character, more than ever wrestles with his own nature and meets demons from their past (besides Fuches maybe, but you know- he's his own Baba Yaga at this point).
This whole show has been a 10/10 for me and I'm willing to put my whole trust in the writers team for now and ever. The acting, writing, pacing, and thematic are just something else, man...
I really hope, that this series will blow up eventually after it's final episode. It deserves to be regarded as one of the greats aka Sopranos, BB etc.
Barry: tricky legacies (2023)
All new but also the same
This is one of the darkest episodes of Barry, and that's saying something. The show did a time jump of eight years, Barry and Sally now live with their son somewhere nowhere and we get to see their day to day life.
Barry gets what he always wanted- a kid with Sally, to get to grow old with her, the opportunity leave his past behind him. Behind the cheap facade there lies a dark and sad reality and the weight of their actions.
Both of them were to cowardly to face their fears and deal with their hardships and they now both come to realise, that there's no running away from the truth.
This episode is a slow burner- and lays out a deeply layered path for the characters to go on. I can't wait to see where the last 3 episodes go.
The Last of Us: Kin (2023)
Rushed but decently earned character development
In this episode, Joel and Ellie travel further towards their goal of finding the Fireflies. They spend a lot of time deepening their relationship and strengthening their trust for each other.
I think this episode enriches the chapter in the game by showing the town Jackson and the life there. Also, I think it was a great idea to show Dina before Part 2. She seemed to be terrified of Ellie, huh? (Wink, wink.)
What I didn't like about the episode was the pacing. It was the only episode until now that made me feel this way. I feel like 10 additional minutes could've done the trick. Maybe they could've expanded the strife between Joel and Ellie some more, they could also have given us some room to breathe after the fight between them. Maybe show Joel talking to Maria? Because of the pacing, the moment didn't have that gut punch for me, that the game had.
Anyways, it's still some good f ing television.
The Last of Us: Please Hold to My Hand (2023)
Good deviation
HBOs The Last of Us continues to present itself in an organic nature. A lot of what happens in this episode doesn't happen in the game- and that is great. In the video game there's just not enough wiggle room for sidecontent, as it's more streamlined and would otherwise take away from the gameplay.
I'm the game, Joel just goes on a killing spree by murdering tons and tons of people that stand in his way. Here, each kill feels more impactful because they're reduced. That way Joel definitely gets more room to reflect on his actions.
Also I like the chemistry between Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. They really sold it for me.
The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
An extraordinary episode of television
This episode almost entirely derailed from the chapter in the game. Because of that, you get to see a lot more of the world and it's inhabitants.
In some way this episode deals with the aftermath of the previous one and in other ways it tells a story about two people getting to know each other, breaking down each other barriers and overcoming the many hardships, that are being thrown at them.
I am loving the additions to the story that they're making here. It's all the things you love about the game and more. I honestly wish, they would explore even more of the world after watching the episode.
Get ready for an emotional ride in this one.
Mob Psycho 100: Cornered ~True Identity~ (2019)
Best Episode in the first two seasons
I absolutely love this episode. It hits like a train and concludes an arc for both protagonists in a profound and meaningful way. The older I get the more I seem to appreciate Reigen as a character. The feeling of being lost and struggling to find your purpose in life is something I've been struggling with and I'm sure that something a lot of people can relate to as well.
For me at least- this right here is the peak of Mob Psycho 100. The episode is not about action scenes or physical conflict at all- rather it is about coming to peace with yourself and accepting your situation in life for what it is.
Absolutely love this show and especially its characters.
10/10 (I can't believe this series hasn't got that many user reviews)
Ted Lasso: Make Rebecca Great Again (2020)
Damn.
I really did not expect this show to win over my heart this quickly. Not after the first 3ish episodes (which were fine), that didn't evoke much in me.
I'm not a football fan, but I thought like: you didn't care for the ins and outs of a hospital as well but ended up liking Scrubs anyways so screw it.
And man oh man- this episode won me completely over. At first I found Ted to be so annoying but now, after learning all these different sides to him and watching his natural kindness changing the hearts of the people around him is just wholesome. This man has feelings and damn it, he's going to show them too.
It's very rare to find a show or any media at all that depicts a man who is not afraid to cry or show his weakness in front of others or at all really.
Can't wait to find out what's going to happen next.
Barry: starting now (2022)
A flawless masterpiece of a season finale
Without spoiling anything in this episode I can only say that the only times I was this affected by a show was after Breaking Bads Ozymandias, Better Call Sauls Plan and Execution and now Barrys starting now.
I honestly can't really comprehend that there's another season on the horizon.
(Also by scrolling down the user reviews I'm baffled by some of the review bombings.)
Barry: candy asses (2022)
The Sopranos of the show
Where to even start... This episode was meticulously crafted, heartwrenchingly beautiful and had (as always) phenomenally acting.
This show is going to go down as one of the best shows of all time; right up there with Breaking Bad and such. 10/10 (this whole season is)
Better Call Saul: Plan and Execution (2022)
So good I had to immediately write this review after finishing the episode!
When I started watching the last season, I knew that it's building up to something. I knew, that something with a point of no return had to happen to the characters I grew to love. It's incredibly rare to have a show like Better Call Saul that takes its time by consequently and steadily building the stage for the inevitable. I believe that this show is going to go down as one of the best Dramas in television for it is more than just a show- it's an example of a fictional universe done right. I'm blown away. 10/10.
Rick and Morty: Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort (2021)
Back on track!
The decoy episode was the last one I really liked. All the others felt off and were mediocre, one or two even bad. So I'm very glad to say that they absolutely nailed this episode and showed some respect to the characters again.
If the last two episodes somehow achieve to be on the same level of quality, I'm content with the season. I mean hey- every show has its weak points. And 5/10 wouldn't be all that awful.
