The Power (2021)
Creepy & atmospheric
Nice to watch an intelligent spooky ghost story with no CGI to speak of.
Interesting premise to set it in the Winter of Discontent blackouts.
Really enjoyed this.
Antebellum (2020)
Interesting premise, but a missed opportunity
This had the potential to be a really good film. It needed better plot development and a less hurried climax to have made the most of what was actually an interesting premise. Pity.
PS NOT a horror movie...
Murder on the Orient Express (1974)
Worth it for the score alone
Magnificent. Beautiful to look at, impeccable cast of Hollywood royalty. Thrilling and surprisingly dark in places.
All this, and one of the greatest scores ever written.
The Daisy Chain (2008)
Understated and creepy
Not a "horror" by any means, but a convincing and unsettling addition to the "cuckoo in the nest" genre. Well worth a watch
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
Good, but flips genres
This is a well-acted and tense relationship drama. The lead characters are intriguing and difficult to work out - all good things. Then, about 4 episodes in, it shifts in genre to something more fantastical.
It's still good, but be prepared...
Rosemary's Baby (2014)
OK adaptation, but why...?
This is a perfectly passable adaptation. Acting, set-pieces, locations, etc all fine, but why...?
It's considerably less of a work than Polanski's hugely accomplished masterpiece, and adds nothing new beyond a bit more of a backstory on the creepy neighbours.
The Stand (2020)
Excellent adaptation
This is a taught and well realised adaptation. The characters, events and situations are, on the whole, very true to the book. The casting is spot on in my humble opinion. Yes, I can understand why those who love the book have found it a little disconcerting that the series uses flashback/forwards to establish plot & character. However, the book is an excellent but very long affair, where establishing mood and character is as important as actions. Without these devices, a great number of the episodes would have seen various characters making their way either east or west without much going on. This adaptation allows us the understand where the characters are coming from, as well as the motivation for their actions, without giving away the big ending.
Jolly good job...
