Talk to Me (2022)
Wasted Potential
The film medium is fundamentally and metaphysically an emotional tool to communicate with each other and share our perspective of the reality we live in with other people.
This film, however, is, in my opinion, ethically wrong and completely messed up. I think directors should consider this view to their film. Why?
The depressed manic black teenage girl is doing everything wrong and, in the end, she gets the punishment she deserves. She never learns from the mistakes she has made. She never thinks before taking action. Everything she's ever done harms the people around her. The victims? A fatherless white family and the depressed manic black teenage girl's father. The tool? An embalmed hand which is in the possession of a black guy and his friend, a trans character.
Evil comes from "the other", evil seduces "the other". I guess this film's representation is very problematic.
What should have been?
This film should have been about the loss of someone close to us. In this case, Mia's mother. The film does that, yes. But in the end, our character must do one of the following: 1) Accept the loss; or 2) Compromise with the pain and try to continue with this feeling.
The feeling of loneliness would make us vulnerable, and in situations like that, we make mistakes, yes. But we should learn from those mistakes and try to do better in the future.
Is that what Mia is doing? No.
The film should empower the embalmed hand and the might it possesses. It should never have been a toy for irresponsible teenagers. And if you are doing this, its original owners should suffer too, I mean Hayley and Joss. They are the ones causing all the mess that traumatizes a family.
If you are trying to be critical about the younger generation and their irresponsible behavior, then you should include a decent character who can make logical decisions. And with these decisions, help our main character and shape their journey in their favor.
What were the directors trying to achieve here, what were they saying with this film, I really don't know. Are they suggesting "stay away from manic-depressive girls" or "white families in danger because of the minorities"? This can be a serious representation problem.
Don't allow every character to be portrayed as less intelligent. Don't allow the decisions they make to be perceived as unintelligent. Because in the end, we just witness uncoherent character actions.
I give this film 3%. It was really awful.
The Exorcist III: Legion (1990)
Nothing Different
There's no Father Morning sub-plot and there's no exorcism. The film ends with Lieutenant Kinderman who shots and kills the Gemini Killer. That's it, these are the only differences that matter.
Other than that, we have some scenes that shot differently, minor dialog changes and VHS tape effects (because deleted scenes shot on film is now considered lost). By the way, absolutely not necessary scenes with different aspect ratio adds nothing to the story.
