The Truman Show (1998)
Awesome movie, worth a watch!
Brilliant plot, really makes you think. If you love films about moral dilemmas and complex characters, this is the movie for you. It even has some comedy in it that fits into the movie very well.
Had to take off a star because there was a thought bugging me the whole time I was watching: did he really not notice that something was off until he was an adult? Or did he just repress the feeling?
Supernatural (2005)
Seasons 1-5 are a 10/10 for me... you have to watch it!!!
If you are on the fence. PLEASE watch the first 5 seasons, you will not regret it.
When I first got into it, I honestly thought that it was like an urban-legends-type of tv show, which I was super into. I've always loved the paranormal and these types of episodes got me hooked. But it becomes SO MUCH MORE than that!
The story line is so well-written that while rewatching it, I found clues in season 1 that lead to season 5. It's not like other shows, where each season is a new plot.... it's more like each season fluidly leads to the next. It builds so well on itself that it almost feels real.
But, about season6+ : not worth watching tbh. I watched up to season 9, and gave up. I would stop at end of season 5, since that's where the writer meant to end it. After s5, it feels like each season is a new/different plot from the previous one, because the network was getting more money than expected and chose to extend it. But choosing to extend the show past its perfect ending comes at the expense of the good story and ruins it.
The Vampire Diaries (2009)
I don't even like romance but this is great!!
The chemistry between the characters is great, and the supernatural/magic elements are woven into the story perfectly to balance the romance. Arguably, it is more supernatural than romance, but let's be honest, the romance is pretty much the main reason to watch the show.
The actors are so full of expression and the characters are very well thought out. Damon (Ian) is probably the best one since he can switch between emotions so fast, making the story unpredictable and fun.
I took off 1 star because at a certain point (after season 3 or 4) the story got too complex that it started getting ridiculous. But until then, it's a 10.
The Gentlemen (2019)
Feels like a movie trying to act cool instead of tell a good story
This whole movie just feels like a power play. The characters have no other personality other than the one-dimensional characteristic of "I'm better than you." They are the typical cigar-and-gun-lovers trope. They swear without purpose; they just want to be seen as intimidating without proving much of any point. Don't get me wrong, I love a good classy/gentleman character if done well, just like in the Bond movies for example, but this is NOT it. The characters walk and act like cheap imitations of so-called classy gentlemen but without any complex emotions or truly deep backstories.
And because these characters were so cliche and one-dimensional, the story was ruined. Usually, a good story line is propelled due to some intense moral dilemma or some higher purpose, but no. There was none of that, the plot was secondary; the whole purpose of the film was just to show how "cool" the characters are.
I watched this movie in theatres and it was literally the first film I had to walk out of. I made it maybe 3/4 through the movie and it felt like there was no cathartic reveal or fight or anything, just pure power play. I doubt that the end of the movie would've made me feel any better. I love good movies and usually I go through a whole range of emotions throughout the movie, but I got no emotions during this one. It's a no from me.
Radium Girls (2018)
Could've been good. Such a shame.
This movie should've been a documentary about an actual historical event, but the writers turned it into a borderline coming-of-age story about a naive girl turned strong, with a little bit of history in it. The lead role's personality is so naive it's insufferable.
The story line is full of filler scenes and is hard to follow, due to the odd cut scenes, bad dialogue, and no visual perspective (the camera stays zoomed in on faces throughout, with very rare zoomed out scenes). The camera often blends different photos in the background to indicate that time went by in the movie... I thought this technique went out of style years ago.
It is extremely disappointing how little actual facts were presented. After seeing the trailer, I was looking forward to the scientific and legal details, since in reality there are plenty. But to be honest there aren't many shown and you could basically infer everything that happens in the movie from the trailer.
I really have no idea why they decided to base the movie's plot about the girl's naivete and feelings rather than detailed facts from multiple characters' perspectives. Really a waste of huge potential.
