A.R.O.G (2008)
Brilliant
I don't know how many times I watched this movie, but I still watch it without getting bored, even in 2023. Cem Yilmaz brings us to 1 million years back in time when the world is hosting many different species like dinosaurs, wild birds, huge bees. It is ' the stone age' and there are two distinct small tribes. While one of them is trying to improve civilization with new inventions, the other one is completely against any improvement and dominating the others with their power. Arif (Cem Yilmaz) is a time traveller who is sent back to this time by his enemy from the first movie. I know, it sounds so classic until now, but it is a parody and all the fun starts at this point. Arif, who is a Turkish comedy hero, deals with the situation in his own unique way again...
The chemistry between the characters is so strong. The script-writing is just brilliant. Music, dressing, make-up are good enough for a parody and it felt at some points as if you were living at that age. All the animals are portrayed in a very nice way. I liked seeing these cute baby dinosaurs :) Starting and the ending are the most powerful parts of the movie so once you start you easily continue and once it ends you don't feel any regret for the time you spent. I just broke one point because there are some redundant parts in the movie. In the end, I can say that this production is unique and everything in this movie is just brilliant! Thank you for this masterpiece.
Kurtlar Vadisi (2003)
Unforgettable!
This series is one of the best cult series in Turkish television history. It has a potential to be watched by a wider audience around the world with a good English version of it.
The story begins with a classical mafia story. An agent (Polat Alemdar), who is trained by the deep state of Turkey, is sneaking into the dark Turkish mafia by saving the life of one of the mafia leaders (Suleyman Cakir). Although we see Suleyman Cakir as a strong mafia leader in the beginning we later understand that he is like a pawn in this mafia world. The strongest person in this world is Karahanli or Baron. All the media know him as a businessman but actually, he manages all the mafia world in Turkey. He has a council which controls as much money as half of the national income of Turkey. The council plays quite an active role in the politics of Turkey and the Middle East. Each council member is a strong mafia leader and they all have interesting stories which shape their personality. Until episode 74, we see the crucial face of this mafia world, how the government treats the mafia, the rise of Polat Alemdar in this world, the development of different emotional stories by different characters, and a love story between a lawyer, Elif and the main cast Polat Alemdar who needs to decide whether he was a mafia leader or an agent or a normal person who loves his country. In episode 74, in the eyes of Polat, we are starting to get to know the people or another council which is more powerful and decides the political issues, wars, rebels around the world. Until this point, we understand that all the mafia world and the baron Karahanli are also pawns in this whole chess game. Finally, we turn our faces into a new war between Polat Alemdar and this strong council. Between Episode 74 and 98 (Final), we see the structure of this council, how they can easily create a war in the Middle East and benefit from it. At this point, the series focuses more on the agent side of Polat Alemdar not the mafia leader side of him. A surprise in the final episode is that Andy Garcia and Sharon Stone are cast as the leaders of this council.
Valley of the Wolves is definitely a classical series which deserves to be watched by people all around the world. Maybe it is not so professional. We can not see a high budget here but once you start to watch it from the first episode it will take you into its captivating world and give you an unforgettable experience.
Rise of Empires: Ottoman (2020)
Concentrated on just one side of the story
I actually liked the way how Romanians are defending their last lands in the documentary. Giustiniani was a little exaggerated for a documentary but as a Turkish person, I have been looking for something that shows Greek side in psychological perspective in conquest of Constantinople. What we have seen in Turkish products is they are all bad but they have, of course, emotions, honors and some heroes who defend the castle bravely. For this, I am happy to see the other side. However, the product should have concentrated on the motivation of Ottomans side too. They simply made the same mistakes that have been done for many years. They just portraited one side and the other side is totally bad. For example, Aksemseddin is much more important than Mara for this conquer. Why we don't see Aksemseddin in the film? Also, there are some Turkish heroes for example Ulubatli Hasan. I think we should have seen a strong warrior against Giustiniani. My review is 5 because they completely ignored the reasons, passions, strengths of Ottoman side or totally wrongly portrait them.
Shahsiyet (2018)
Excellent job but missed the chance to be the best ever
If you look for something different, something gripping, something with a good message you should definitely watch this series! I've watched 12 episodes in just 3 days. The story itself is so captivating. It is about a 65 years old retired man who was diagnosed by his doctor as Alzheimer and knew that he would start to forget everything slowly. He decides to do the thing that he has always wanted to do but couldn't do because of his lack of courage! Killing guilty people... The story maybe comes to you familiar because we've seen some movies with the story similar to this one. In the beginning, I also thought like that but the handling of the story is really different and so convincing. I couldn't see any hero, extraordinary character in the story. The killer has a lot of weaknesses contrary to classical killer movies in which there is a killer who think every detail and a police (detective) who solves everything. The police reactions were totally the Turkish police reactions. When they experience a this kind of situation the Turkish police would give this reactions. In the movie, it is also emphasized that serial killer murder is an unexpected situation in Turkey. Every reactions that police and media gave is so natural. I felt as if I was in the film! Additionaly, the main message of the series is also very strong and you can not clearly see what is the point of all this murders until the end of the series. It has a very surprising ending.
But I have some negative points about the film for example female main character Nevra (Cansu Dere). Her role is really important in the series. She is not only the main police who is trying to catch the killer but also the one who is in the center of the killing story. Maybe, this character is more important than Agah (Haluk Bilginer) for the story and the message of the film. Basically, while Agah was the brain of the story Nevra should have been the soul of the story. Nevertheless, I couldn't get this strong emotion from Nevra character although her story was perfectly written by scriptwriter. She should have been able to make us to drop our tears for her in the final scene. It was a very strong scene. If we had seen the remarkable performance by Cansu Dere like Haluk Bilginer's this series could have been one of the best in its category.
But overall I advice you to watch this series if you haven't. You won't be regret.
