Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)
Loved it
I have to say, I´m a little surprised by all the negative reviews here. I watched glass onion in the cinema with low expectations, because I have grown pretty weary of sequels, but i left thoroughly entertained and hoping for a third movie.
If i had to find problems with it, I´d say that the first 15-20 minutes seem a little indulgent, but then it really builds up a nice pace.
And I mean, listen: I understand that people see Knifes Out as the perfect whodunnit. It was flawlessly dense, perfectly structured and had a great look, while effortlessly switching genres multiple times with its narrative twists - it was a masterpiece.
Glass Onion knows it cant succeed in recreating that experience, so it doesnt try to. It has a new look, a new kind of plot twist and a very different ensemble cast, but in my mind its still fits perfectly into the Benoit Blanc universe.
Once again I am absolutely loving Daniel Craigs character (and boy is he having fun with it) and one again i am very happy that he doesnt dominate the movie, but takes you along for the ride. Blanc is not the protagonist, he is a tour guide through the mystery and gives the other characters enough space to shine.
Also, I´ve read multiple times that the current pop-cultural references annoy people, and personally i agree that it was somewhat overdone this time, but part of Rian Johnsons genius is that he manages to breathe fresh life into an old genre. The elements that tie this story to our modern world are partly what makes the whole thing so compelling - not because "hamilton is cool lol", but because the political messages only hit home when we realize that, yes, this movie has something to say about the world we are currently living in. Many muder mysteries deal with social issues we can comfortably disconnect from, because they feel outdated or nostalgic. Glass Onion puts its finger on a very current issue which concerns us all. Both movies, in my opinion, manage to be perfectly entertaining and clever while also having relevant political punchlines. Yes i want to have brilliant costumes and genre-typical settings and glamour and fun plot-twists but i also want the story to be meaningful and current and smart. Rian Johnson hasnt disappointed me so far and i am very much looking forward to other additions to the franchise.
Leverage: Redemption (2021)
best thing to come out of 2021
Man. I have missed this show SO GODDAMN MUCH! I´m just extremely happy that its back, and the creators did a wonderful job. When TV-shows get a revival, its always a tricky business and often ruins the atmosphere and chemistry that made the original work. Leverage Redemption does not fall into this trap. The characters are familiar, like friends who you have known forever, they have all grown but are still the people we love. Even though Nate is gone (and - as a character - dearly missed), the show makes it work. The new characters are lovable and fit the Team, which is amazing, since its extremely hard to integrate new characters into an perfect assemble. Their personas (especially in Harrys case) could use some refinement, since I dont feel like we know them very well mid-season, but its nothing that bothers me much as a viewer. I think that overall the show hasnt yet reached the potential of the original - the brilliant balance between humor and dark social criticism worked a little better in the old series (maybe through Nates character?). The episodes used to feel like movies, perfectly closed and beautifully produced pieces with engaging and clever plotlines, usually very artfully shot. Leverage redemption feels a little more shallow. It lacks a certain depth, storywise and visually. BUT this is only in contrast to the original and so the bar is extremely high. It still remains an awesome show, with a brilliant cast and socially relevant stories. I still enjoy the cases and all the moments inbetween and I still love the ot3 with all my heart (and miss Hardison dearly). Parkers, Eliots and Hardisons relationship is once again left amiguos, but I wasnt really expecting them to make a polyamorous ship official and I'm okay with it - they clearly love each other, romantically or not, and remain extremely well written, likable people. I also love, the way the writers respect all of their characters. Nobody is sexualized, irrelevant or shallow. They are older but do not lose their value because of it, instead they have just grown closer and gotten more competent and I think that is a great message.
All in all m very happy with the reboot. I think that with a little time, they might also be able to match the original in greatness, if the creators remain carefull and attentive in their writing process. I really hope, that we will get a second season, that would be really fantastic! And if possible please with Hardison!
Sherlock: The Final Problem (2017)
A Firework of Incompetence
Like watching a slow-motion car accident, only worse.
I once considered this one of the best shows on television,
as it turned out, I was wrong.
Save yourselves the precious time you have left on this planet and pretend season 4 never existed.
If the creators were anymore up their own backsides, they would suffocate on their inner organs.
The tower of babel was a greater success story than this heap of clisheed, nonsensical, unsatisfying, out-of-character garbage.
Supernatural: Carry On (2020)
2020 had better writers than this Finale
I wish there were negative stars.
I wish the english language had more words to describe this dumpsterfire of despair.
I wish there was a special room in hell for the authors of this show, where they would have to spend eternity with their eyelids taped open and watch this garbage on loop.
The Room is a masterpiece, compared to this lazily written, emotionless, self-satisfied piece of cinematic diarrhea.
I understand now, that there is no god, because no all-knowing being would let something like this happen.
I wish the world had ended in 2012, just so this could never have been made.
